Peace Hyde is KOKO Magazine’s New Cover Girl

$

KOKO Magazine’s latest cover star is Ghanaian screen diva Peace Hyde. The TV star gave the digital fashion house an exclusive chance to peek behind the curtain and reveal what makes this faith and purpose-driven, stunning queen tick.

See excerpts of her interview below.

On her biggest challenge: I believe the biggest challenge is overcoming my negative mindset. You will always have challenges in whatever field you are in and that is to be expected. But those challenges can be overcome. The difficulty is in overcoming your own fears and doubts and that lies in adopting the right mindset. For the longest time I was consumed with what people would think of me and that dictated a lot of the things I did until I decided to change my mindset. That was my biggest challenge and that is what I tell people when they ask me about my journey. You can overcome every obstacle that comes in your way provided you adopt the right mind set and that has been the biggest challenge I had to overcome.

On her Inspirational shows: I think firstly, I am an extremely faith-driven person so I have to acknowledge that without God, I will not be sitting where I am today. The media or entertainment space is very fickle so one minute you could be on top and celebrated and the next moment; you are the latest hot topic for a scandal. I believe in getting my head down and putting in the work. I work hard because I know it is simply the only way to grow in my craft and succeed at what I do. I believe we are all destined to be great and sometimes all it takes is a little determination and a lot of hard work to make that potential a reality.

On her personal life: I believe as women we have the ability to multi-task and I think that is one of the biggest advantages we have. It is true I have a hectic workload and when I am in work mode; there is really no time for anything else. But I believe the key to having a balanced life is also making time for some down time. At the moment I would say I work a lot more than I relax simply because I believe when you are given an opportunity, you give your absolute best to deliver. I have a good social life but it can be better but I am actually not complaining because I love what I do and I am extremely blessed to be able to do it.

On societal expectations of marriage: I believe society places a lot of expectations on young girls in terms of what age or stage in life they are supposed to get married which invariably leads a lot of young girls down a path where they are forced into marriages with the wrong person and often leads to a life time of sorrow and depression. There is nothing wrong with people getting married early providing they have taken the time to know each other and are making an informed decision based purely on love and mutual respect for one another instead of societal or peer pressure. That is what I am against. I believe I will get married when God deems it the right time.

FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN! ARSOG sues hotels and transport operators for royalties

The Audio Visual Rights Society of Ghana (ARSOG) has filed close to 100 writs against some major hotels and transport operators in the country as a result of their failure to pay royalties due to ARSOG for onward payment to its members.

The legal counsel for ARSOG J. A Larkai of Prudential Law Officers in Accra says ARSOG decided to seek legal action against the hotels and transport operators after persistent efforts to get the defaulters to pay the royalties. The writs have been filed in courts in Kumasi and Koforidua.

He indicated that ARSOG had a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ghana Hotels Association but the Association has not been able to get its members to make payments hence the decision to proceed to court.

According to Mr. Larkai, with regards to the shops, salons and small restaurants, ARSOG intends to engage them initially through their respective associations before proceeding to court if they prove recalcitrant. He added that some of the hotels were initially paying but stopped hence the move to court to seek redress.

He said ARSOG is calling on the courts to enforce the law by receiving the royalties due ARSOG from 2014 to 2016 adding that he subsequently expects the hotels and transport operators along with all other commercial users of movies to voluntarily pay for their 2017 licenses.

The legal counsellor for ARSOG noted that the body is amenable to out of court settlements and hopes to bring a close to the whole issue over the next two months.

The Chairman of ARSOG Richard Prempeh indicated that ARSOG is not adopting an antagonistic posture with regards to the commercial users of movies but rather seeking the welfare of its members who deserve the benefits of their work. Mr Prempeh is of the view that as the hotels, transport operators and other users benefit from the use of the movies, the owners of the rights of these movies also deserve their due.

ARSOG was established in 2011 to protect the rights of movie makers in Ghana and is governed by an eleven member board. The organization distributes royalties it collects from commercial users of movies to its members.

Premier League & La Liga Returns To DStv & GOtv ND

The world’s most exciting football leagues are returning to SuperSport with a bang this weekend as the world’s best play to win the most coveted prizes in the club game. Only DStv will showcase all 380 matches of the Premier League and all 380 matches from La Liga while GOtv customers will get a slice of the action with select games.

Chelsea will defend their Premier League title but will likely face a sterner challenge this campaign with most of their rivals having added handsomely to their squads. Chelsea have brought in striker Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid, but missed out on their number one target, Romelu Lukaku, who is bolstering the revolution at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho.

Arsenal have high hopes for free-scoring forward Alexandre Lacazette, an arrival from Lyon, but face a challenge to keep hold of striker Alexis Sánchez, who has attracted interest from around the continent. Everton have been among the biggest spenders ahead of the new season, and the return of Wayne Rooney to Goodison Park will be one of the stories to track through the season.

The new Premier League season kicks-off on Friday, August 11 when Arsenal host Leicester City and will air live in HD on SS3 now available on the Compact package.

Real Madrid know they will face a huge challenge from Barcelona for the Spanish La Liga title as they seek to retain the trophy for the first time in a decade.

It is remarkable to think that Real’s La Liga victory last season was just their second in the previous nine seasons, and the question now is whether they can wrestle the power away from a once dominant Barcelona on a more regular basis as the season kicks-off on Friday 18 August on SS8 and Maximo1.

Real manager Zinedine Zidane will also be plotting another win in the UEFA Champions League having stormed to the title last season with a 4-1 victory over Juventus in the final. The qualifiers for Europe’s elite club competition are under way, but the group stages will start on September 12 as the teams vie for a place in the final at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev on May 26, 2018.

SuperSport will also broadcast two classic European clashes early in the new season. Mourinho will take his Manchester United team to the Philip II Arena in Skopje, Macedonia, to have former side Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on August 8.

And a few days later Real face-off against bitter rivals Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup, with the first leg at the Camp Nou on August 13, and the return at the Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid on August 16.

According to Cecil Sunkwa Mills, General Manager, Multichoice Ghana, DStv customers on Premium, Compact+ and Compact will have access to every game of the new European Football Season action live and in glorious HD only on SS3 and SS7 while DStv Family customers will get La Liga on SS8 and GOtv viewers will also enjoy select games of the new football season on Select2 with delayed matches on Select 3.

Why Usher’s insurance company may not defend him in herpes lawsuits

$

Usher’s insurance company claims the singer didn’t just allegedly hide his herpes diagnosis from his sexual partners, but from them as well — which they believe means they shouldn’t have to fork over a dime on his behalf.

According to court documents filed today in Los Angeles Superior Court — and obtained by PEOPLE — New York Marine and General Insurance Company believe they are under no obligation to defend the singer in his current lawsuits in Georgia and California or any potential lawsuits that may come down the road.

Among their list of reasons, New York Marine claims the policy between them and Usher “does not apply to ‘bodily injury’ … arising out of the transmission of any communicable diseases by insured.”

Furthermore, New York Marine claims the policy expressly states that New York Marine “does not provide coverage for an ‘insured’ who has a. intentionally concealed or misrepresented any material fact or circumstance.”

The company also says Usher never made mention of the fact he settled a prior lawsuit in 2012 for $1.1 million over the same issue.

New York Marine is asking the court to rule that they are not obligated to defend Usher in the Georgia lawsuit, the California lawsuits or any future lawsuit that may arise involving the transmission of the herpes virus.

The company has begun defending him in the Georgia case until a judge rules, and is asking to be reimbursed for any expenses they incur in the meantime, should they prevail in this case.

Usher’s attorney did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

#AFRIFF students set for scholarship in France

The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) is set to send another set of film students on scholarship – this time, to CineF’abrique, a film school in Lyon, France.

The scholarship is the third in the series, whereby 20 students are selected from the 200 that participate in the AFRIFF Talent Development Workshops annually for further training abroad. The talent workshop is an intrinsic part of the festival programmes that has held sway for seven years.

Unveiling the next set of beneficiaries at a press conference attended by representatives of partner institutions – Ford Foundation and Alliance Francaise on Wednesday, AFRIFF Founder/CEO, Ms Chioma Ude said all is set for the 20 students selected from last year’s workshop to embark of the training – a six-week summer course in the French city.

The initiative, she said, provides beginners and intermediate courses for young people in their choice areas of filmmaking.

Shedding light on this, Mr. Paul Nwulu, Program Officer at Ford Foundation said the scholarship scheme, meant to advance the aspirations of these burgeoning talents, is an intensive hands-on training camp on various aspects of filmmaking.

“What we have done for the last two years was to use the AFRIFF to select young filmmakers who went to Montana State University in the U.S. to do an extensive course on documentary filmmaking, focusing on social justice documentaries. And that focus was because that is what Ford Foundation is interested in. We are looking at issues that make the lives of human beings better, so, the young people went there to learn these issues.”

Mrs Emmanuelle Ravot of Alliance Francaise with some of the female students

He said Ford Foundation will only cater for 10 of the students who are females because the previous editions had more male participation, adding that his institutions is also concerned with advancing the career of women.

“One of the things that make this year unique is that we actually asked AFRIFF to focus on young women to tell these stories and why we did that is because we looked at the data for the first two years, we trained about 36 young people over the first two years and women were ‘marginalized’ in that process. We had less than half of women and we felt like, if we look at our society today, women are the most ‘marginalized’ groups in our society. Even though they make half the population of this country, they are nowhere in our parliament in this country; we have less than five percent of women there. Also, look at governor’s appointed positions; we have a lot less women than any other country in the region.”

The last two seasons had Ford Foundation bankrolling the scholarship at the prestigious Montana State University, United States. Nwulu said the Foundation is encouraged to support AFRIFF on the scholarship because feedback from previous efforts has been laudable.

“This year, we have decided to move the location from Montana to Lyon, France to give a different type of experience, and for Ford Foundation, one of the reasons why we decided to partner AFRIFF is because, if you look at very viable partners that are dealing in the space of storytelling, AFRIFF is one of them, with their film festival and their engagement in trying to get African stories out to a global audience. We could not ask for a better partner to work with.”

As a prerequisite to the six-week summer course in France, the students from the 2016 AFRIFF class will be exposed to a requisite French language tutorial at the popular Alliance Française in Lagos.

According to Mrs Emmanuelle Ravot, Deputy Director/Director of Studies at Alliance Francaise, the French lesson is expected to prepare the students in the areas of French courtesies and cultural background, even though the students will be taught filmmaking in English language.

LR Mrs Emmanuelle Ravot, Deputy Director and Director of Studies at Alliance Francaise, Mr Paul Nwule Program Officer Ford Foundation and Ms Chioma Ude CEO AFRIFF at the press conference

After the course, they are expected to be taken on a tour of Paris and its beautiful sites, including France 24 where plans are on to make them go through brief internship.

Ude said the scholarship is one in a series of other talent development initiatives of the seven-year-old festival, adding that the skill acquisition and youth development initiative was designed to use filmmaking as an authentic vehicle for youth empowerment.

“AFRIFF’s vision is to raise awareness about African cinema, its vast potential and the tremendous socio-economic impact of creative professionals in Africa. The first four years of the festival were strategically intended to build the AFRIFF brand and gain the brand notoriety that has now earned us partnership with global brands like Access Bank, Air France, Ford Foundation, Relativity Media, British Council and Alliance Francaise among others,” she said.

The beneficiaries include 18 Nigerians – Linda Omena Sodje, Adejumoke Aderounmu, Tosin Adeyemi, Hannah Babatunde, Jennifer Eneanya, Olubunmi Ajiboye, Lois Burutu, Cynthia Okoroafor, Olaniran Adedapo Aisida, Marvellous Michael, Bolaji Adelakun, Moyo Shomade, Chisom Ifeakandu, Ekene Nwonye, Ngozi Emmanuel, Obodoakor Emelie, Demola Adedoyin, Vivian Ubochi, and two Ghanaians – Joseph Otsiman and Richard Ofoe.

The beneficiaries expressed great excitement, just as they talked about their expectations.

“I am excited to be a part of it, I am glad I am a beneficiary of the scholarship. I am glad I sent in my submission and I got picked,” said Tosin Adeyemi, a female film student from Edo State.

On her expectations, Adeyemi said, “I expect to learn a lot, I expect to come back a better person with more knowledge about my craft and how well to go improving on myself. I expect to improve from 20 to 80 percent.

On his part, Ekene Nwonye from Delta State cannot wait to make a difference in Nollywood.

He said:”I believe this is a great idea that will help build the film industry in many ways; in the sense that we go there to get the knowledge and then we comeback to change the movie industry.”

Continuing, Nwonye said, “I don’t want to expect too much, I just want to focus on the learning and gain the knowledge. But I expect a lot of fun while learning. You know this is film production, so it should be fun.”

I applaud the people of Kenya for their commitment to democracy, which they demonstrated so enthusiastically during the recent elections, notably by turning out in such high numbers.

I congratulate President Kenyatta on his re-election and his victory speech in which he reached out to his rival and called on all Kenyans to reconcile and embrace peace. I urge him to pursue these efforts to bring together all elements of Kenyan society to move the country forward.

I commend the leader of the Opposition, Raila Odinga for the peaceful electoral campaign that he led. He has been a courageous defender of democracy. So I urge him now to pursue his concerns over the electoral outcome through the due process of law and to put the interest of the nation first, as he has patriotically done on past occasions.

I join Kenyans in mourning those who have already died over this election, and sincerely hope there will be no more. Peace, stability and prosperity depend on the political leaders of Kenya. They should be careful with their rhetoric and actions in this tense atmosphere and I urge them to act responsibly.

The people of Kenya have once again shown their commitment and desire for a peaceful future. I call on all of Kenya’s leaders to ensure that their hopes are not disappointed.

Binge-watch ‘Harlots’ – first and only on Showmax in Africa

• A story of mothers, daughters and warring brothels in 18th century London

• “So much of London was built on the profits of prostitution. One in five women were prostitutes during that time.” 2016 and 2017 BAFTA nominee Lesley Manville

• “The world for women then was brutal. It still is.” Two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton

• 97% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes
• ‘Harlots’ is first and only on Showmax in Africa

You can now binge-watch Harlots, starring two-time Oscar-nominee Samantha Morton (In AmericaSweet and Lowdown) and 2016 and 2017 BAFTA nominee Lesley Manville (River,Mum) as rival brothel owners in 18th century England.

“So much of London was built on the profits of prostitution,” says Lesley. “One in five women were prostitutes during that time. And it was happening at all levels of society.“

Jessica Brown Findlay (Lady Sybil in Downton Abbey) also stars as Samantha Morton’s eldest daughter, Charlotte, the city’s most wanted courtesan, who begins to grapple with her position in both society and her family.

Screenwriter Moira Buffini (Jane Eyre) was partly inspired to create Harlots by reading Harris’s List of Covent Garden Ladies, a bestselling yearly publication describing, in very fine language, the services of London’s sex workers, from high-class courtesans to those who solicited in seedy bars and taverns. This gentleman’s guide to whoring led her to an outlaw society of women who had found a way to turn the economy of exploitation around and use it for their own benefit.

“We knew instantly that we wanted to create a drama about these women, from their point of view,” says Moira. “We found them to be funny, bold and outrageous, full of wit and irreverence. It was easy to become seduced by them and their world.”

She and her co-creator, EastEnders’ actress Alison Newman, took their idea to Oscar-nominated producers Alison Owen (Elizabeth, Temple Grandin) and Debra Hayward (Les MisérablesLove Actually), who loved their take on a family drama involving mothers and daughters and two warring brothels.

They then brought on BAFTA-nominated directors Coky Giedroyc (The Killing, Penny Dreadful) and Jill Robertson (Last Tango In Halifax, Vera), as well as National Television Award nominee China Moo-Young (Misfits, Call The Midwife) – making Harlots a rare show completely written and directed by women.

“We wanted to look closely at a profession that hasn’t changed in hundreds of years,” says Moira. “It’s always been the coalface of gender politics and that’s where we wanted to put our female gaze. Our characters have a contemporary edge. It’s a costume drama with its teeth sunk firmly in the modern world.”

“It surprised me how modern it was,” says Samantha. “The world for women then was brutal. It still is.”

She spells out how little has changed. “It’s similar still today: Child brides. Child abuse. The legal age of consent varies in the world, with some countries as young as nine. The world continues to be brutal and the world continues to be unjust and unfair for many. And it’s how people get out of that and survive. The amazing stories of survival.”

At the time of writing, Harlots had a 97% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “Think Downton Abbey meets Game of Thrones,” wrote Variety, while The Orlando Sentinel hailed it as “the most outstanding period drama debut on television since Game of Thrones.”

You can now binge-watch the complete eight-episode first season of Harlots – first and only on Showmax in Africa.

Teen Choice Awards 2017 winners

Sunday night marked the 2017 Teen Choice Awards, honoring teenagers’ favorite pieces of pop culture from not only film, TV, and music, but fashion, sports, and online as well.

While there was no official host, the live performances more than made up for the absence at the University of Southern California’s Galen Center. California rapper KYLE opened the show singing his hit single “iSpy” alongside Lil Yachty, who then performed “Forever Young.” Rita Ora closed the performance with “Your Song.” Louis Tomlinson wrapped up the show with Bebe Rexha, while musical acts by Rae Sremmurd and French Montana and Clean Bandit with Zara Larsson were sprinkled in throughout the night. Simon Cowell also used the awards show to debut his newest act, boy band PrettyMuch.

Miley Cyrus was awarded the show’s highest honor, the ultimate choice award, for her decade-long involvement with Teen Choice. Though she couldn’t be in attendance, the multi-hyphenate, who had taken home 18 Teen Choice Awards prior to this year, scored four additional nominations.

Bruno Mars, who also couldn’t be at the awards show while on his 24K Magic Tour, accepted the visionary award through a video. He then surprised fans with a sneak preview of his new “Versace on the Floor” music video featuring Zendaya.

The decade award went to Maroon 5 to celebrate the band’s evolution over the past 10 years. While accepting the award, the band joked about their age. “We look really good for 38,” Adam Levine quipped. “We’re not teens, but the fact that teenagers, all of you, can appreciate what we do after all this time, from our first album coming out in 2002 — most of you hadn’t been born at that point — and so it’s so crazy we’re still doing this.”

Viewers aged 13-19 chose their favorites across 93 categories by casting their votes on varying social media platforms. However, only a handful of the surfboards were actually given out during the live broadcast.

“Riverdale” was the big winner of the television section, winning all seven of the categories for which it was nominated. Fifth Harmony also impressed, winning all three of their eligible races.

Some honorees used their speeches as a platform to spread awareness given recent events in Charlottesville, Va. “With all the injustice and hatred and everything that is happening, not only in the world but in our country right now, I need for you young people to be educated, I need you to listen, I need you to pay attention, and I need you to go ahead and understand you have a voice and it is OK to use it when you see something bad happening,” Zendaya said while accepting the award for choice summer movie actress. “Do not let people tell you what you should feel.”

Chris Pratt even surprised fans when he showed up in-person to accept his surfboard for choice Sci-Fi movie actor.

Among the presenters for the night were Adam Scott, Craig Robinson, Kumail Nanjiani, Anthony Anderson, Katherine Langford, Lucy Hale, Ne-Yo, and Fifth Harmony.

M.anifest and Mi Casa drop new video for – Be My Woman

$

Ghanaian rapper M.anifest puts his feelings into words on this song “Be My Woman” with South African supergroup Mi Casa lending a helping hand.

Be My Woman is a lover’s plea to take a relationship to the next level; from a now to a forever. The song is a heartfelt one where the sweet melodies and vocals of Mi Casa’s J Something complement M.anifest’s silky and macho baritone and shy ask for a woman’s attention.

M.anifest’s prolific writing and wordplay are on full display with the smooth voice and soulful songwriting of J Something punctuating the sentiments of the rapper.

This mid tempo banger is a hybrid of sounds with a groovy guitar melody reminiscent of a Southern African folk style against the backdrop of Hip-Hop 808s. It has MikeMillzOnEm (Ghana) on the production with horns from Mi Casa’s Mo-T’.

BBC News broadcasts a week of special programming on Africa’s rising population

BBC News have today announced a week-long series exploring the steep incline in Africa’s population and the continent’s coping mechanisms.

The population of Africa is predicted to double to two and a half billion in just 30 years. On a continent where nearly two thirds of people are already under 25, this vast new baby boom has the potential to provide a huge pool of workers ready to transform African economies, or the potential to create an even greater migration problem.

BBC Africa Correspondent, Alastair Leithead, has been investigating the potential of this “demographic dividend” in a series of special reports from across Africa.

For a week, beginning Monday 21st August, BBC World News and BBC World Service will broadcast daily features within Focus on Africa, looking at matters such as the rapid urbanisation in Nigeria, the industrial revolution in Ethiopia, contraception in Niger and food sustainability in Kenya.

From Monday, more information can also be found on bbc.com/africapopulation, including a written in-depth analysis, a series of short videos and additional features.

A special documentary, Africa’s Population Explosion, will also broadcast on BBC World News (DStv 400) at 2330 GMT on Friday 25th August and 1130 & 1630 GMT on Saturday 26th August.

The movie, which is the highest-earning film in Nigeria this year and topped that country’s box office for two weeks after its release in June, was unveiled to South African audiences on Thursday.

Aptly, the launch took place at the Sun City resort in the North West Province, where much of 10 Days in Sun City was filmed. The film, directed by South African-based Nigerian director Adze Ugah, will be released in 20 cinemas across South Africa on 25 August 2017.

This smash hit Nollywood blockbuster features Nigerian A-listers Ayo Makun (also known as AY), Richard Mofe Damijo, Mercy Johnson and Adesua Etomi, as well as rapper Falz and Afro-pop artist 2Face Idibia. It also stars South African actress Amanda Du-Pont and comediennes Celeste Ntuli and Thenjiwe Mosely, as well as Hollywood actor Miguel Nunes Jr.

South African Tourism has hailed the rom-com as a shining example of how entertainment and tourism can converge in a credible, creative and effective manner, thanks to mutually beneficial partnerships – in this case, between the film’s producers and Sun International.

Said Sisa Ntshona, South African Tourism’s Chief Executive Officer: “Nigeria is one of South Africa’s most important tourist source markets in Africa, as well as a valuable ally in growing tourism on the continent. With Nollywood being the second-largest movie industry in the world, we are thrilled that so many of Gauteng and North West tourism offerings have been given a prime starring role in this film, integrated into the thrill-a-minute plotline.

“Audiences are whisked on a rollercoaster ride of experiences in close proximity such as hot-air ballooning and safari game drives in the Magaliesberg, a cruise on the Hartbeespoort Dam, visiting Lesedi Cultural Village and high-end shopping in Sandton, then into the heart of Soweto to see Nelson Mandela’s house and the Hector Pieterson Memorial – all set against the luxurious and adventure-packed backdrop of Sun City itself.”

Ntshona said 10 Days in Sun City aligned perfectly with South African Tourism’s “5 in 5” strategy, which has set the target of attracting an additional five million domestic and international tourists within the next five years – including from the African continent.

He explained that the idea for the film was conceived after a successful hosting of Nigerian “influencers” by South African Tourism. “We thank Corporate World Entertainment, the producers, for choosing South Africa as the setting for their blockbuster and are confident that the cross-continental ties that were forged during this exciting project will continue to bear fruit as we showcase Africa to the world,” he said.

10 Days in Sun City has made N170 million (more than R6 million) at the box office to date, which places it as the highest-grossing film in Nigeria in 2017, ahead of the latest Fast and the Furious sequel and Wonder Woman, and the biggest Nollywood film of the year to date.

Following its South African cinema release through Times Media Films, it is slated for distribution in four Francophone African countries, as well as in the United Kingdom, France, the United States and Canada.
