Dick Gregory, Comedian and Civil Rights Activist, Dies at 84

Dick Gregory, the comedian and activist and who broke racial barriers in the 1960s and used his humor to spread messages of social justice and nutritional health, has died. He was 84.

Gregory died late Saturday in Washington, D.C. after being hospitalized for about a week, his son Christian Gregory told The Associated Press. He had suffered a severe bacterial infection.

As one of the first black standup comedians to find success with white audiences, in the early 1960s, Gregory rose from an impoverished childhood in St. Louis to win a college track scholarship and become a celebrated satirist who deftly commented upon racial divisions at the dawn of the civil rights movement.

“Where else in the world but America,” he joked, “could I have lived in the worst neighborhoods, attended the worst schools, rode in the back of the bus, and get paid $5,000 a week just for talking about it?”

Gregory’s sharp commentary soon led him into civil rights activism, where his ability to woo audiences through humor helped bring national attention to fledgling efforts at integration and social equality for blacks.

Democratic Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey tweeted, “Dick Gregory’s unflinching honesty & courage, inspired us to fight, live, laugh & love despite it all.” A tweet by actress/comedian Whoopi Goldberg said, “About being black in America Dick Gregory has passed away, Condolences to his family and to us who won’t have his insight 2 lean on R.I.P”

Gregory briefly sought political office, running unsuccessfully for mayor of Chicago in 1966 and U.S. president in 1968, when he got 200,000 votes as the Peace and Freedom party candidate. In the late ’60s, he befriended John Lennon and was among the voices heard on Lennon’s anti-war anthem “Give Peace a Chance,” recorded in the Montreal hotel room where Lennon and Yoko Ono were staging a “bed-in” for peace.

An admirer of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., Gregory embraced nonviolence and became a vegetarian and marathon runner.

He preached about the transformative powers of prayer and good health. Once an overweight smoker and drinker, he became a trim, energetic proponent of liquid meals and raw food diets. In the late 1980s, he developed and distributed products for the popular Slim-Safe Bahamian Diet.

When diagnosed with lymphoma in 2000, he fought it with herbs, exercise and vitamins. It went in remission a few years later.

He took a break from performing in comedy clubs, saying the alcohol and smoke in the clubs were unhealthy and focused on lecturing and writing more than a dozen books, including an autobiography and a memoir.

Gregory went without solid food for weeks to draw attention to a wide range of causes, including Middle East peace, American hostages in Iran, animal rights, police brutality, the Equal Rights Amendment for women and to support pop singer Michael Jackson when he was charged with sexual molestation in 2004.

“We thought I was going to be a great athlete, and we were wrong, and I thought I was going to be a great entertainer, and that wasn’t it either. I’m going to be an American Citizen. First class,” he once said.

Richard Claxton Gregory was born in 1932, the second of six children. His father abandoned the family, leaving his mother poor and struggling. Though the family often went without food or electricity, Gregory’s intellect and hard work quickly earned him honors, and he attended the mostly white SouthernIllinois University.

“In high school I was fighting being broke and on relief,” he wrote in his 1963 book. “But in college, I was fighting being Negro.”

He started winning talent contests for his comedy, which he continued in the Army. After he was discharged, he struggled to break into the standup circuit in Chicago, working odd jobs as a postal clerk and car washer to survive. His breakthrough came in 1961, when he was asked to fill in for another comedian at Chicago’s Playboy Club. His audience, mostly white Southern businessmen, heckled him with racist gibes, but he stuck it out for hours and left them howling.

That job was supposed to be a one-night gig, but lasted two months — and landed him a profile in Time magazine and a spot on “The Tonight Show.”

Vogue magazine, in February 1962, likened him to Will Rogers and Fred Allen: “bright and funny and topical … (with) a way of making the editorials in The New York Times seem the cinch stuff from which smash night-club routines are rightfully made.” ”I’ve got to go up there as an individual first, a Negro second,” he said in Phil Berger’s book, “The Last Laugh: The World of Stand-up Comics.” ”I’ve got to be a colored funny man, not a funny colored man.”

His political passions were never far from his mind — and they hurt his comedy career. The nation was grappling with the civil rights movement, and it was not at all clear that racial integration could be achieved. At protest marches, he was repeatedly beaten and jailed.

He remained active on the comedy scene until recently, when he fell ill and canceled an August 9 show in San Jose, California, followed by an August 15 appearance in Atlanta. On social media, he wrote that he felt energized by the messages from his well-wishers, and said he was looking to get back on stage because he had a lot to say about the racial tension brought on by the gathering of hate groups in Virginia.

“We have so much work still to be done, the ugly reality on the news this weekend proves just that,” he wrote.

He is survived by his wife, Lillian, and 10 children.

New technologies like mobile money are transforming the future for women across the globe, but without positive role models, women could be failing to take full advantage of these opportunities.

  • WorldRemit and the Miss Ghana UK Foundation have launched a new competition #MyFutureGH to address this challenge by helping young Ghanaian women to build a better future for themselves.
  • Whether you’re a talented artist like Theodosia Salome Okoh or an entrepreneur like Bernice Dapaah, WorldRemit is offering you the opportunity to win Cedi 20,000 to realise your ambitions and inspire others in the process. Miss Ghana UK will fly to Accra to personally award the prize to the winner.

KPMG reports that women who have positive role models growing up are twice as likely to feel confident today (50% vs. 25%) compared to those who did not have positive role models. More than eight in 10 women (84%) remarked that positive leadership role models helped them feel confident about what they could accomplish in life.

Cilla Baafuor-Gyewu of the Miss Ghana UK Foundation comments: “Miss Ghana UK highlights that beauty is more than skin deep as winners must use their brains and resourcefulness to further the interests of Ghanaians and act as ambassadors for Ghana in the UK. By working with WorldRemit on #MyFutureGH we aim to take the work we have begun on female empowerment a step further and raise awareness of the wealth of talent that Ghanaian women possess and encourage others to seek opportunities to pursue their own ambitions.”

Martin Best, Head of Brand Marketing at WorldRemit, added“Remittances around the world are being used to build better futures for the next generation. When money is accompanied by examples of positive role models to show young people what can be achieved, the impact is far greater. In this way, we hope to shine a light on talent and inspire young Ghanaian women to aim higher and to embrace opportunities to build a better future”.

Morocco, South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria have shown strong interest in hosting Africa’s biggest music event, All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA 2017-2019 editions as announced by the international Committee of AFRIMA.

These countries have shown their interest through a competitive overture made available to the African Union Commission, AUC who is saddled with the role of deciding on the hosting right in partnership with the International Committee of AFRIMA.

Nigeria has hosted the event for one term of three years since 2014. However, Nigeria has again shown interest to host the event for another term of three years as stated in the letter written by Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture with reference number FMCT/ECS/002/I to the African Union.

In his letter, the Honourable Minister stated that, “We have also witnessed increased unity and collaborations among young music African professionals as they congregate each year in Lagos, Africa’s most vibrant entertainment capital for the awards ceremony.”

He further noted that Nigeria has benefited immensely from serial hosting of AFRIMA via enhancing Nigeria’s image and tourism opportunities, promoting Nigeria’s culture and tourist attractions, positioning Nigeria as a safe and hospitable destination among others.

Some of the parameters that the AUC-AFRIMA will consider in deciding on the host country for the All Africa Music Awards events are immigration and visa application management, availability of functional airport and good land transportation system, venue infrastructure, hotels and hospitality facilities as well as adequate provision of security for guests and officials.

In Partnership with the African Union Commission, AFRIMA celebrates the rich musical heritage of the African continent by fostering unity, cooperation, interaction, partnerships and progress in the continent through the instrumentality of music.

The 2017 AFRIMA will hold from November 10 to 12. It is scheduled to present to the continent a world class programme of events such as the Africa Music Business Roundtable (November 10), which brings together big music brands, music producers and intellectual property persons to start profitable conversations on the needed networks and infrastructure for an expanding youth-based industry.

Other events are the AFRIMA Music Village (November 10), an evening of a non-stop open music festival of live performances from the African stars and nominees, with an expected audience of 40,000 people; The Main Awards Ceremony (November 12); a star-studded and world-class event with live performances and television broadcast to 84 countries on 109 television stations around the world.

HBO Hackers leak ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 finale secrets

Hackers leaked an apparent outline of the Season 7 finale for HBO’s “Game of Thrones” on Friday.

The document was part of the latest information dump stemming from a recent breach of the network’s system.

The outline for the finale that airs Sunday, called “The Dragon and the Wolf,” is part of a lengthy document entitled “Preliminary Outline.” It is dated April 26, 2016, and contains details about every “Game of Thrones” episode.

The release, referred to as the “6th wave of HBO Leak” by hackers calling themselves Mr. Smith, also includes contracts for people employed by the show. TheWrap is not detailing the information.

HBO has stated regarding the continued leaks: “It has been widely reported that there was a cyber incident at HBO. The hacker may continue to drop bits and pieces of stolen information in an attempt to generate media attention. That’s a game we’re not going to participate in.”

Recent data dumps by the hackers have included “Game of Thrones” scripts, network documents, internal emails and episodes of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Ballers” and “Insecure.”

The thieves previously released a ransom notice that they apparently sent to HBO, demanding over $6 million worth of bitcoin to prevent leaks. But the leaked data does not appear to have significantly impacted ratings for “Game of Thrones,” as the show has hit numerous series highs in viewership in recent weeks.

JAY-Z explains why he and Beyonce named the Twins Rumi and Sir

We finally know why JAY-Z and Beyonce named their twins Rumi and Sir.

The 47-year-old rapper explained the origin of their little ones’ names in a new interview with Elliot Wilson and Brian Miller for their podcast Rap Radar, which was released on Friday.

“Rumi is our favorite poet, so it was for our daughter,” the 4:44 artist shared. “Sir was like, man, come out the gate. He carries himself like that. He just came out, like, Sir.”

The hip-hop mogul also touched on Blue Ivy’s freestyle on one of the bonus tracks included on his new album.

“I can’t even listen to that song no more,” JAY-Z expressed. “I only listen to her freestyle and then I’m like, ‘I can’t listen to this,'” adding that she had headphones on, climbed on a little stool and started rapping.

For now, the rapper is trying to spend as much time with his family before he heads on tour.

“I booked the tour for October so I could have at least four months to just really bond and see their fingers and sh*t like that,” he explained. “They’ll be with me [on tour] anyway but I’m just saying, like, [I needed] a space where I’m not doing anything. I’m just focused on them. I’m not thinking about a show at night or anything like that. That’s why the tour is so far away from the release of the album.”

4:44 was released on June 30 and fans quickly latched on to every single lyric to see if he made any references to the infamous elevator incident with Solange Knowles, infidelity rumors or his new twins.

Floyd Mayweather defeats Conor McGregor by 10th round TKO

LAS VEGAS — In the end, the equation we all knew coming in turned out to be true: The best boxer in the world would beat one of the best mixed martial artists in a boxing match.

How we got there, however, was completely surprising.

In his return from a two-year retirement, Floyd Mayweather improved to 50-0 with a 10th-round TKO over an incredibly game Conor McGregor in their pay-per-view superfight at T-Mobile Arena. But the storyline was just as much about McGregor, the UFC’s lightweight champion, in defeat than it was about the 40-year-old Mayweather.

McGregor, 29, who was making his pro debut, never fought reckless or overly aggressive, which contrasted his prediction of a first-round knockout. What he did was present Mayweather with a poised and credible challenge, teasing a bright future in the boxing game should he consider it.

“He’s a tough competitor. I think we gave the fans what they wanted to see,” Mayweather said. “Our game plan was to take our time, let him shoot all his heavy shots early and then take him out at the end down the stretch.”

Mayweather, who officially announced his retirement after the fight, was true to his prediction throughout the fight’s build when he promised it wouldn’t go the distance. He also stuck to his guns about standing in front of McGregor looking for a finish.

Who killed Princess Diana? Conspiracy theories still endure, twenty years later

The car crash that killed Princess Diana on on August 31, 1997, was a tragedy that shocked the world. Multiple investigations ultimately attributed her “unlawful death” to the reckless driving of both her chauffeur Henri Paul, who was ruled to be drunk at the time, and the paparazzi dangerously tailing her limousine.

But two decades later, conspiracy theories still endure, pointing fingers at everyone from the paparazzi and the Royal Family to the French police and British M16 foreign intelligence service to their roles in Diana’s death.

With August 31, 2017 marking the 20-year anniversary of Diana’s death, revisit the unsubstantiated theories surrounding surrounding what exactly happened in Paris’ Pont de L’Alma tunnel that night.

1. Diana and Fayed’s relationship doomed the couple

© Patrick Bar, AP Dodi Fayed and Princess Diana on the French Riviera

One common theory posits that Diana and Fayed’s public courtship cost them their lives.

Martyn Gregory, author of Diana: The Last Days, explains in the TLC documentary Princess Diana: Tragedy or Treason that Fayed was planning on proposing to Diana the night of the crash.

Hours before the crash, “Dodi decided to go to the jeweler Repossi (who) showed him a new ring, which was part of a series called ‘Tell Me Yes,’” he said. “He didn’t buy one of the rings, but he did order a ring for Diana, and that was delivered to the imperial suite at the Ritz Hotel.”

After his son’s death, Al Fayed famously launched his own investigation into the accident, believing the royal family was biased against his son because he was an Egyptian Muslim. Al Fayed reasoned the British establishment wanted to prevent Diana and Dodi from marrying so that Prince William, a future king, and Prince Harry would not have a Muslim stepfather.

2. Diana was pregnant

Central to Al Fayed’s belief that foul play was behind Diana’s death were his claims that Diana was pregnant with Dodi’s child at the time of the crash. Al Fayed even publicly claimed that Diana phoned him on the night she died, to tell him about the pregnancy.

Adding fuel to conspiracy theorists’ fire that Diana was expecting was the fact that she was partially embalmed after her death, a procedure that would make it impossible to test her blood to see if she was pregnant.

“She was embalmed before the autopsy, which is against the law,” Richard Belzer, author and Diana conspiracy theorist, told Tragedy or Treason. “We couldn’t prove she was pregnant or not because she was embalmed…so that’s incredibly, ghoulishly suspicious to order an embalming, especially in such a high-profile death.”

Operation Paget, the British police’s investigation into the conspiracy theories behind Diana’s death, ran tests on Diana’s blood found in the wrecked Mercedes, finding no trace of the HCG hormone that indicates pregnancy.

“Tests have shown that it is possible to detect the pregnancy hormone HCG in very old

bloodstains,” the report reads. “The bloodstain from the carpet was tested and no HCG was detected.”

3. Henri Paul plotted the murder

© AP Britain’s Diana, Princess of Wales is seen on the security video, going through the doors at the Ritz Carlton. Just hours later, the Princess along with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and their chauffeur died from injuries sustained in a car…

As for which parties plotted the assassination of Diana and Fayed, conspiracy theorists’ favorite suspects include the couple’s driver Henri Paul.

Paul was the security manager at the Ritz Hotel, which was owned by Al Fayed, and had been in the family’s employment for a decade. As the theory goes, Paul was paid off by the elite British intelligence agency MI6 to assassinate Diana and Fayed. Former MI6 officer Richard Tomlinson famously attested that he had seen Paul’s file, and could confirm that he was actually an informant.

“Henri Paul, who was the driver of the car, was also the security manager at the Ritz Hotel and he was a MI6 informant…I saw his file,” former British intelligence officer Richard Tomlinson told reporters at the time. “It’s been well established that he went missing for two or three hours the night of his death.”

Despite the fact that Paul only made $35,000 a year, he had nearly $250,000 in his bank account at the time of his death, in addition to a significant amount of cash with him when he died, prompting further speculation that M16 paid him off.

“I am certain that this money originated from MI6,” Tomlinson told a French judge in 1998. This is speculation on my part, but if he was an MI6 informant, it would be quite normal for him to receive money.”

4. The white Fiat Uno

Another suspect was the driver of the white Fiat that reportedly followed Diana into the tunnel, leaving forensic evidence on the Mercedes that suggested the two cars made “glancing contact,” per the Operation Paget report.

“Obviously that was a big story, because it was, ‘Where is the white car? Who was driving it? Were they to blame somehow?’  David Leigh, former Daily Mirror editor, told Tragedy or Treason.

Conspiracy theorists attempted to link the Fiat to James Andanson, and thus link the well-known French paparazzo to the crash scene, claiming he was also an MI6 informant. Operation Paget accepted his alibi that he was home with his wife during the crash. Andanson was found dead in his car in the French countryside in 2000; police ruled it a suicide but Al Fayed and other doubters claim he was killed for the part they believe he played in the alleged assassination of Diana and Dodi.

5. The “flash before the crash”

© The Associated Press FILE- In this early Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997 file photo, police services prepare to take away the car in which Britain’s Diana, Princess of Wales, died in Paris, in a car crash that also killed her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, and the…

French eyewitness Francois Levistre, who was driving through the tunnel ahead of Diana’s Mercedes, claimed to have seen a bright light at the crash’s point of impact. That kicked off the “flash before the crash” theory, with Tomlinson, the MI6 agent, claiming he had seen a similar flashing strobe light in his training, used to disorientate drivers as a method of vehicular assassination.

Levistre’s wife, who was sitting next to him in the car, contradicted his testimony, and Operation Paget later concluded that no such flash had taken place.

Hajia4Real talks about her brand and businesses

$

Ghanaian socialite and businesswoman, Hajia4Real, is a household name when it comes to fashion and setting trends. She has over the years dazzled the fashion world with her amazing fashion sense and exhibited exclusively exotic pieces for public appearances.

Born Mona Faiz Montrag, she seems to be in her own world and has risen to the occasion at any time. Possessing an extraordinary beauty, she has an enviable popularity around the African continent and beyond with nearly a million-people following on her official social media platforms, Instagram (hajia4reall) and Snapchat (hajiia4reall).

Three years ago, whiles planning life after her studies at the Arts Institute of New York, Mona decided to start an agency to provide party services. This idea led to the formation of LVC Entertainment, an event and talent management firm with operations across the United States. As the CEO of LVC Entertainment, Mona personally got involved in the operations of the company.

Early last year, LVC Entertainment commenced operations in Ghana and organized a major event in December 2016 to wrap up activities for the year. Dubbed as Global Wave, the party held at Soho Bar in Accra and has been described as the official end of year jam. Attendance included a galaxy of stars including Sarkodie, Jupiter, Efya, Pope Skinny and Moesha Boduong with performances by Shatta Wale and Nigerian musician Burna Boy.

Wither the aim to satisfy her entrepreneurial desires, Mona earlier this year announced her dropped hints of her second business. On Saturday 8th July 2018, she launched her cosmetics line, 4Reall Beauty Cosmetics, at the Marvels Minigolf Avenue, close to Abelenkpe Traffic Light, in Accra. Recording a massive audience and great production by LVC Entertainment, the event witnessed a great performance by Ghanaian songbird, Efya.

On a relaxed Sunday afternoon, I drove to the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel for an agreed interview with Hajia4Real. She had completed a photoshoot with a UK based online magazine dedicated to projecting young African business owners. After exchanging pleasantries, the interview commenced.

“At the moment, it is all about my business for me. As you might be aware, I have two major businesses with operates in Ghana as well as the United States of America with our headquarters in New York. When it comes to the priority, it is certainly the new baby, my cosmetic line, 4real Beauty. That is what is important to me now”, she said.

According to Mona, the brand is doing very well and she has been overwhelmed by the response and interest from the public. “The business has been amazing and sometimes surprised at the interest people have in the business. We have received orders from Togo and Nigeria and as we speak, my team is discussing with key distributors in Togo and Nigeria the possibility of partnerships to make sure the products enter those markets. I am very optimistic of the prospects in those countries and we are not going to relent in our effort to ensure we achieve that”.

Elaborating on the cosmetic line, Mona said “there is the need to grow the 4real Beauty range which includes lipsticks, nail extensions and eyelashes. We have had activations in Accra, Kumasi and Tamale and it was mind-blowing the turnout at these places. We took time to engage key stakeholders in the business as well as part of our sensitization and media advocacy plan for the products. Going forward, we will be doing a lot more of that and also going into the other regions to promote the brand”.

She added that “what we provide is quality and affordability. We are aware of the financial constraints and also the quest for people to look good at the same time. I am someone who doesn’t compromise on quality and for that reason; I am committed to providing consumers with quality products at affordable prices. I believe in the bigger picture and growing the business over time with the costumers so I am not looking at overpricing the products to make more profit”.

Mona mentioned her family as her motivation for striving to grab the gold in life and never give up her desire to reach the top in the business world. “My family has been very supportive at all times and they push me to do a lot more. My daughter, Nalia is a year old now and I do all this for her and the special people in my life including my man. I can’t imagine achieving all these without them”.

Although the birth of her first child might have given her a deeper understanding of life and deepened her love for children, the mother of one has no plans on having more children anytime soon. This will afford her to build her businesses and further her education.
