‘Village Sex’: Wiyaala set to premiere new video on July 28

Songstress Wiyaala, fresh from wowing 70,000 fans at Morocco’s massive Timitar Festival with a sublime vocal performance and her infectious energy, is set to drop the long awaited single “Village Sex” from her forthcoming album on the 28th July.

Naturally, we were intrigued to know what’s coming, given the controversial sounding title of the song. After all, the delectable songbird is well known for pulling surprises out of her musical hat!

From the raunchy and ever popular “Rock My Body” to the sultry love song “Leno”, the anthemic “Africa” and the enigmatic work of art “Sun & Moon”, Wiyaala can always be relied on to come up with something artistic and imaginatively produced.

So we asked Wiyaala and she laughingly commented: “I won’t give the game away, but I will give you a couple of clues. Yes, it’s about sex and it’s based on a traditional song from my village telling how a man can lose his virginity. My mother’s backing vocals feature on the song and my dad helped me write the lyrics!”

Sounds like a family affair! We can’t wait!

Nelson Mandela will be with us forever; Opinion Piece By Tokozile Xasa, Minister of Tourism South Africa

Join me on a journey to some very special places in our country, places that tell a remarkable story for the whole world.

Many international tourists, and some South Africans, would have experienced parts of the trip when they visited the tourist sites that relate the story of our first democratic President on Mandela Day. I hope that many more will have an opportunity to do so before Mandela Month draws to a close.

For those of us who cannot travel right now, let’s start our tour among the rolling hills around Qunu in the Eastern Cape. Scattered homesteads are sometimes clustered into little villages reached only by dusty, bumpy roads.

The cattle that you can see dotted around the landscape would have been tended by a young Rolihlala Mandela as they grazed all day long, nearly a century ago. There would have been a small school in this area, where a teacher bestowed the name “Nelson” upon a young man, little knowing that he was to become a universal symbol of the spirit of humanity and reconciliation among people.

Places like this are not just about picturesque hills and sparse dwellings. They reveal layer upon layer of our history and heritage. They reflect the thoughts and values of leaders like Nelson Mandela, and convey the collective consciousness of our people.

You can have an authentic interaction by living in private homes and local lodges in many rural communities like these. Here, you can gain first hand insight into how traditional beliefs and cultural practices intermingle with modern life. You can understand how the history and hardships of our people guide our aspirations to transform our economy and bring marginalised communities into the tourism mainstream.

This place was so important to former President Mandela that he chose to return here to retire, after leading a divided nation striving to reconcile itself, and serving our country as the world’s most revered statesman.

Let’s leave the quiet rural countryside of Qunu for now, we will return later.

Let’s head north to Gauteng, to Soweto in Johannesburg. It was here, in Vilakazi Street, that Nelson Mandela lived in a small red brick house typical of apartheid’s townships. Further down the road lived Desmond Tutu. Together with church colleagues and comrades in arms, Tutu and Mandela led the long struggle to tear down the policies that confined their people to live within their tiny boxes. Vilakazi Street became the heart of the struggle against apartheid.

Today, the precinct is bustling with restaurants and street vendors who depend on the busloads of visiting tourists for trade. It is the only street in the world that was once home to two Nobel Peace Prize laureates. Most visitors are international tourists, but more and more of our people are starting to experience the benefits of exploring their own country as our domestic marketing and promotional campaigns take root.

More tourist traffic through Vilakazi Street means better prospects for the economy of the precinct. Here, the layer of our historic social struggle is interweaved with many economic dimensions: the precinct supports jobs, small businesses and many entrepreneurs. Tourist guides, transport operators and vendors of memorabilia all benefit from tourism.

The former home of Nelson Mandela, and the Vilakazi Street precinct that developed around it, demonstrates the power of tourism to convert cultural heritage assets into tangible benefits for communities today.

We leave the city of Johannesburg and head for the quiet town of Howick in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands. It was here, along a winding back road, that Mandela was captured by security police, leading to the Treason Trial, his imprisonment on Robben Island, and the remarkable transformation in our country following his release.

The capture site is marked by an iconic sculpture which gives visitors a sense of the important historic event which changed the course of our history so dramatically. The tourism economy around the site is not as well developed as that of Vilakazi Street, but it has become a must-see site for passing tourists.

That single moment in time, when a policeman stopped a car driven by a man disguised as a chauffeur, was to become a defining moment in our history.

Standing here at the capture site, you feel the full significance of that momentous event along this very ordinary road.

From here, our journey follows Nelson Mandela to the prison cell he occupied for over two decades on Robben Island. A short ferry ride from Cape Town takes you to the island’s small harbour. A tour of the prison conveys the hardship its occupants were subjected to.

Standing in the cell that held Mandela captive is an extraordinary, life-changing experience.  You cannot stop thinking about how someone who was confined to the brutality of this place can emerge with such humanity, even towards his captors.

This experience forces all of us to look deep within ourselves, and to question our own sense of humanity towards others. It forces us to discover the Mandela within each of us, and to express the values he espoused in whatever ways we can.

The penultimate leg of our trip once again follows the footsteps of Nelson Mandela, this time from Robben Island to the Union Buildings in Pretoria, where the prisoner became the President.

On the front lawns, an imposing statue of a smiling Nelson Mandela stretches out his arms, protecting his people with the warmth it exudes. It is a fitting tribute to Mandela the man, the statesman, the father of our democratic nation.

From here, we will make one more stop before our journey ends. We return to a traditional family gravesite at Qunu, to Nelson Mandela’s final resting place. As his family and comrades gathered here to return his body to the very soil that sustained his early life, the nation resumed life without one of the greatest sons of Africa.

But the story is far from over: Nelson Mandela will be with us forever, through the political legacy that brought freedom and democracy for all in our country, and through the many sites that continue to reflect on momentous events in his life. From Qunu to Vilakazi Street, from Howick to Robben Island and Pretoria, and, finally back to Qunu, a journey through these sites brings our history and heritage to life.

I hope that many more South Africans will be able to make this remarkable journey, during Mandela Month and afterwards. And I wish that corporate South Africa, philanthropic foundations and others join hands and work together to make the trip possible for those who cannot afford to travel, especially our youth.

They will also return home with a renewed sense of what these sites mean for all of us in South Africa, and for humanity all around the world.

Experiencing the story of Nelson Mandela, and understanding the values and principles it reveals, makes each one of us a better person, and this is what makes the world a better place for all of us.

We end our journey as changed people, with a deeper understanding of ourselves and each other, fulfilling the ultimate purpose of tourism.

AMA gives Shatta Michy a week to remove Diamond Pub and Grill spot

There was a controversy at the Diamond Pub and Grill spot at East Legon in Accra last Thursday when a task force from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) tried to demolish the structure.

The facility is owned by Madam Shatta Michy, wife of Ghanaian dancehall musician, Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jnr. a.k.a. Shatta Wale and was among some structures lying within the East Legon Green Belt zone and which had been earmarked for demolition.

The task force had earlier demolished some unauthorized structures and walls in the area.

It, however, had to spend several hours trying to demolish the facility following pleas from Madam Michy and some residents not to demolish her facility.

Madam Michy Pleads

Madam Michy initially claimed that the keys to the facility were with one of her workers and was waiting to pack out her belongings to enable the task force to pull down the structure.

Officials of the AMA, who heeded to her pleas, finally disconnected her facility from the electricity grid and seized her electricity meter. She was given a one-week ultimatum to pull down the structure.

This generated controversy as some officials among the team from the AMA questioned why other people’s structures had been demolished while others were let off the hook.

The Metropolitan Coordinating Director of the AMA, Mr. Sam Ayeh-Datey, in an interview, said the developers whose structures had been pulled down would be surcharged with the cost of demolition.

AMA Warning

He said new developers entered the site has taken advantage of a court writ served on the AMA by some residents seeking to restrain the assembly from demolishing their structures but indicated that the AMA would not relent in its efforts to pull down unauthorized structures.

“While taking steps to set aside the said writ, the AMA observed that new developers had encroached on the site because of the break in activity as a result of the summons served on the assembly and were erecting structures with impunity.”

“Clearly, the activities of developers within the East Legon Green Belt zone constitute a flagrant disobedience of the judgment of the High Court that is dealing with the matter,” he said.

On April 13, 2017, the Accra Metro Security Committee, headed by the AMA Chief Executive, Mr. Mohammed Adjei Sowah, issued a 21-day ultimatum to encroachers in the area to cease all building activities within the Green Belt zone.

DStv Premium customers will be treated to a ringside view when SuperSport crosses to the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas at 1am (GMT) for the action-packed undercard, with the main bout expected to start after 3am.

“Unlike in the US where the fight will be available on pay-per-view in HD for $99.95, DStv customers will enjoy the event as part of the DStv Premium offering, at no extra cost” says Cecil Sunkwa Mills, General Manager, MultiChoice Ghana.

In keeping with the tradition of showcasing super-fights, from Marvin Hagler versus Tommy Hearns and Mike Tyson versus Michael Spinks to Mayweather against Manny Pacquiao, SuperSport has been in the forefront of delivering the most-anticipated events in the world of sports.

“This has been at the top of our list ever since the fight was announced,” said Gideon Khobane, chief executive of SuperSport. “People continue to talk of the great fights we brought to viewers in the 1980s and beyond. But this is more than a fight, it’s a mega-event with layers of controversy, excitement and intrigue. We’ll also be putting together great background programming for our valued DStv customers around the fight.”

Billed as “The Money Fight”, the contest has drawn as much praise as it has criticism for the nature of the match-up: boxing’s most celebrated fighter of the last decade against Mixed Martial Arts’ most resplendent star who has yet to engage in a professional boxing fight.

Big fight fans can watch via their decoders or on DStv Now, online or the app.

Non-DStv customers will be able to watch the fight on the internet TV service Showmax via Vodafone later in the day. “Once you understand how you wish your brand to be perceived, you can start to be more strategic about your personal brand. This doesn’t mean you can’t be human. On the contrary, as Michael Simmons writes, authenticity is key in the digital age. A strong personal brand can yield tremendous Return On Investment whether you are working with an organization or leading one.”

Her daily pursuit is to build a brand that’s different from anything anyone has seen. Something that reflects various personalities and helps people who are otherwise seen as ‘weird’ to come out of their shells and confidently express themselves.

Meet U.K Boga; new VJ for Zone Three6

$

His real name is Jeffery Frimpong, popularly known as U.K Boga. He lived a significant part of his adult life in London. Everyone knows him as a dancer, but not many know that he also enjoys street dancing and doing backflips in his spare time (lol). He intends to be world famous for dancing.

He’s a natural athlete who is more taken to football. He trained and played for a few football clubs, for a while. He probably took dancing more seriously than football. He happens to be one of those weird people who dance even when there is no music playing; that is how passionate he is about dancing.

He was born and a raised Christian and his beliefs can be summed up into doing good unto others, and putting God first in everything. He believes teamwork is important for success in every endeavour and it is even more important in his dancing career. He belongs to a dance group called ‘Ghana Boyz’, where he has learnt a lot about taking criticism, supporting other people and working hard.

He has come a long way from the lone wolf who arrived in London with a dream. He has worked hard to earn what he has now and is proud of his achievements. He believes he has come this far through focus and self – motivation. He does not think he has arrived, he still has unanswered prayers and unattained heights but he’s grateful and also hopeful.

Apart from being a dancer, hes also an astute businessman. He always sees business opportunities even in mundane circumstances.  He has a lot of business ideas that he intends to follow through with and actually enjoys the brainstorming process of coming up with business ideas. He also has the knack for organising unique events and adding a personal touch (he’s always creating opportunities for the dancer in him to come out and display).

Recently, his dance crew got nominated for a dance award in Ghana, which is an accomplishment he is greatly proud of. Another great accomplishment is being in Davido’s ‘If’ music video. Davido is a well-recognised afrobeats artist and being in his video is a great privilege. Uber has also recognised his talent and are sponsoring him; he even has his own Uber code. They have also recognised him as the ‘UK’s most influential dancer’.

He has had the opportunity to work with influential acts like Sarkodie, Davido, Shatta Wale, and several others. He looks forward to working with many other acts in and across the continent. As a believer, he recognises the importance of walking through any doors that are opened for him.

He considers himself as a ‘people’s person’. He is always excited to meet and speak with new people. He has a philosophy that “you never know what wisdom you can gain from meeting someone new”. Among his friends, he’s usually the clown who is always laughing and cracking others up with laughter. He is a carrier of positive energy and is hyped to fill the show with a lot of laughter, energy and positive vibes.

  • Winner of six international awards, including Prize of the International Federation of Film Critics at Toronto and Best East African Film, AMVCA
  • Debut film from Just A Band’s Mbithi Masya
  • Fifth film by One Fine Day (‘Soul Boy,’ ‘Nairobi Half Life’)
  • “A condensed version of Lost” The Playlist

Mbithi Masya’s multi-award-winning debut feature, Kati Kati, is now streaming in Ghana on Showmax.

When Kaleche (Nyokabi Gethaiga), a young amnesiac, wakes up in the middle of the wilderness, she has no idea how she got there. She makes her way to Kati Kati, a nearby lodge, where she meets a motley crew of residents under the leadership of Thoma (Elsaphan Njora). As Kaleche strikes up a quick and intense friendship with him, she discovers that there’s a lot more to Thoma and the mysterious Kati Kati.

At Toronto International Film Festival, the Kenyan film won the Prize of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) for the Discovery program. The FIPRESCI jury called Masya “an exciting and unique new voice in cinema” and praised Kati Kati’s “generous and poetic tone, not without a degree of anger at personal and political injustice.”

Reviewing Kati Kati at AFI, The Playlist hailed it as “vibrant and exciting… A condensed version of Lost… A small movie about big ideas… Plays like an act of discovery… An original, vibrant and exciting statement from a talented filmmaker who clearly has much more to say.”

Having been screened at over 40 festivals globally, Kati Kati was named Best East African Film at the 2017 Africa Movie Viewers Choice Awards and also won the New Voices/New Visions Award Special Mention at the Palm Springs International Festival; the Filmpris at the CinemAfrica Film Festival in Stockholm; and the Emerging Filmmaker Award at the 2017 Minneapolis St Paul International Film Festival.

Kati Kati is the fifth film by One Fine Day, the Kenyan production company co-founded by German director Tom Twyker (Run Lola RunPerfume). Previous One Fine Day films include Soul Boy (Audience Award, Rotterdam International Film Festival) and Nairobi Half Life (Audience Award, AFI Fest).

Masya made his name as one-third of the cult Kenyan group Just A Band, while his music videos have been featured everywhere from The New York Times to Fader to Huffington PostKati Kati is his first film.
