Following the super success of the cooking workshops for kids in 2015, The Table Bay’s Executive Chef Jocelyn Myers-Adams, will be hosting monthly classes in culinary arts for emerging young cooks from April to November 2016. Mini Chefs will get to work side by side with Myers-Adams for two inspiring hours while learning some special tricks of the trade.

“Our previous cooking workshops were a resounding success and we want to continue offering these events as we are keen to harness culinary passion and develop cooking prowess amongst children from an early age. Cooking can be a wonderful creative outlet for young people, and we are always amazed by the extent of the enthusiasm and willingness to learn amongst the children who have attended our classes in the past.

“The Table Bay’s Mini Chefs is the perfect recipe for teaching children that cooking is an enduring life skill as well as a healthy and creative hobby which could also turn into an exciting career one day. We have a great lineup of Mini Chefs events planned for this year,” says Myers-Adams.

They will be assisted by Myers-Adams and a dedicated minder, and will get to take home what they have prepared.

AWC 2016: Black Queens lock horns with the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia today

Ghana’s senior female football team, the Black Queens, take a 2-1 advantage into the second leg final round African Women’s Championship (AWC) qualifier against Tunisia at the Accra Sports Stadium this afternoon.

Black Queens, a week ago fought from a goal down with 10 women to edge closer to making an appearance at the 10th edition of the African Women’s Championship scheduled for Cameroon later this year.

Two second half goals from the foot of Samira Suleman and Princella Adubea swallowed a first half penalty converted by Ella Kabaachi for Tunisia.

The Carthage Eagles advanced to this stage of the qualifiers after eliminating Burkina Faso 2-0 over two legs in the earlier round while the Black Queen’s drew a bye for the first round of qualifiers.

In Sabrine Mamay, Imène Mchara and Kabaachi, the Tunisian have a trio who on a good day can cause havoc to any side with less pressure from fans.

However, Coach Yussif Basigi has promised to make sure the Black Queen’s make it to the November tournament with yet another victory over the visitors this afternoon, noting that he has a well-planned strategy to see off the visitor in a grand style.

The team would be without its safest pair of hands Patricia Mantey who was sent off by Senegalese referee Fatou Thione in the first leg, in her absence Nana Ama Asantewaa will keep the post.

Should the Queens secure victory today, they would join seven other countries as well as the host country, Cameroon for the 2016 AWC finals scheduled for November 19 to December 3, this year.

Church In Canada Buys Private Jet For Ghanaian Pastor

A church based in Canada has presented a private jet to its Ghanaian pastor on his birthday.

The church, miracle arena for all nations in Canada, which is a multi-cultural charismatic and a fastest growing church based in the heart of Toronto, Canada was founded in 2011 by Dr. Kofi and Rev. JoAnne Danso.

In February this year, the church presented the private jet to Dr. Kofi Danso and his wife Rev. JoAnne Danso as a birthday present for their passion and charisma towards the work of God.

In an interview with Prophet Dr. Kofi Danso, he  noted that he had prophesied into being that God was going to bless him with a jet this year on his birthday and so was not too surprised when the church bought him one as a  gift on his birthday.

Prophet Danso in his interview disclosed that he believes the church blessed him with the jet on his birthday due to the passion and the charisma he exhibits towards God’s work.

Speaking on how he feels about owning a private jet, Prophet Danso noted that it feels good and it makes his travels easy, adding that the jet makes it easier to travel back to his home church after preaching elsewhere and also helps to reach more souls with the word.

The Ghanaian pastor stressed that the private jet was not a thing of luxury but rather a necessity. He also disclosed that the private jet generates funds for the church when not in use, as it is lease out when not in use. Prophet Danso in his interview advised other churches to emulate the example of blessing their pastors with private jets if they have the means.

“Every church should do this for their pastors if they can. The more we help pastors to reach one continent or the other we help fulfill the gospel”, he noted.

In his concluding remarks, Prophet Danso who has also been honoured by the Canadian Member of  Parliament for his contribution to the development of the community advised all to live their lives just as the Bible admonishes us to and to be workers and walkers of the word.

Prophet Kofi Danso is a Ghanaian who has lived in Amsterdam for 9 years and migrated to Canada for five years. He is happily married to JoAnne Danso and has four kids, including a set of twins. He has been in ministry for 24 years and has 15 books to his credit.

Tigo Empowers Women In Aboasa With An Oil Palm Processing Machine

Hundreds of women in small-scale oil palm extraction business in the Aboasa-Akwamu of the Eastern region have benefited from an oil palm processing machine.

The machine was acquired through the support of Tigo’s Community Champion programme launched in 2013 to address the peculiar needs of various communities across the country.

Traditionally, the production of palm oil was done manually by the women of the Aboasa community and as a result they could only produce a few gallons a day after a very lengthy process. The smoke from the various processes of cooking the palm fruits and extracting the oil was also dangerous to their health and wellbeing.

Commissioning the project, Tigo’s Director for Customer Operations and Acting Director for Tigo Business, Stephen Essien, said as an initiative, Community Champions had been a resounding success. It had responded to the various needs of several communities.

“We know that women in rural areas face persistent challenges in access to resources, knowledge and services, therefore responding to their plea for an oil palm processing machine was a step in the right direction. We are confident that the new processing machine will change the lives of the women and children who essentially depend on agriculture for their livelihood”, he said.

He emphasised that in providing quality and reliable access to communication services to Ghanaians, Tigo remains committed to fostering improved living standards in the communities where it operates.

The Chief of Aboasa, Nana Minta IV, was excited about the new processing machine and was optimistic it will boost employment opportunities for the women and men in the community.

Since it was launched in 2013, several projects have been undertaken as part of the ‘Community Champions’ programme. They include the donation of 100 bicycles to Family for Organised Lives (FFOL); renovation of the Tafo Maternity Unity, provision of potable water to Dawurampong in the Central region and donation of hospital equipment to the Keta government hospital.Tigo Empowers Women In Aboasa Tigo Empowers Women In Aboasa

Black Queens Seal Qualification To African Women’s Championship

Ghana’s Black Queens sealed qualification to the 10th edition of the African Women’s Championship (AWC) scheduled for Cameroon with a 4-0 thrashing of the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia at the Accra Sports Stadium this afternoon to complete a 6-1 aggregate score line.

The Queen’s opened their goal scoring account as early as the 27th minute when striker Samira Suleman finished off a beautiful cross from the left flank by Portia Boakye with a header that sent the sparse crowd applauding her effort.

Six minutes later Boakye got her name on the score sheet with a low grounder that beat goalkeeper Ella Kaabachi in post for the Carthage Eagles.

In a half that saw the visitors rarely threatening the Ghanaian goal area, Suleman had a gifted pass from goalkeeper Kaabachi on the stroke of half-time but she shot wide of target, much to the disbelief of the fans.

Back from recess the Queen’s piled up pressure on the Tunisians and after series of near misses and sporadic shoot off target striker Prinscilla Adubea made it 3-0 after a solo effort saw her going through a forest of Tunisians legs before slotting pass on-rushing goalie in the 75th minute.

Seven minutes to end proceedings, Suleman got her brace on the day and Ghana’s fourth with a superb strike to cup an afternoon of fine soccer artistry for the Black Queens.

The Queen’s by the victory have thus qualified for this year’s AWC finals scheduled for Cameroon between November 19 to December 3.

Hiplifer Omanhene Pozo To Undergo Brain Surgery

$

Sitting in a wheelchair at the Neuro Surgical Ward of the 37 Military Hospital is once vibrant hiplife artiste, Omanhene Pozo.

He looks frail and can barely speak. Uttering a few words is a luxury because the former member of hiplife group, Nananom, has, for now, lost his ability to move on his own.

Tucked behind the reception of the ward, Omanhene Pozo, wearing a white singlet, shorts and ash socks, is very ill.

The ‘Kyenkyen Bi Adi Meawu’ hit singer can’t move his legs and arms, family sources explained to Myjoyonline.com during a visit Tuesday morning.

Family sources, who didn’t want to go on record, told Myjoyonline.com that the rapper is currently waiting for the outcome of series of tests by doctors to ascertain whether he is fit to undergo surgery to remove a brain tumour.

This website gathers that Omanhene Pozo had been in and out of hospital between November 2015 and February 2016. Doctors admitted him after his condition deteriorated.

Currently, the family of the rapper, struggling to pay for his medical bills, are simply praying that he will be fit enough for the surgery.

Already, his wife, Myjoyonline.com gathers, has sold Omanhene Pozo’s car and even clothes, to support his medical bills. Tracy Toulan forces a smile in the face of her adversity.

Myjoyonline.com tried to speak to the rapper but he couldn’t say much. He simply nodded to some of the questions and thanked this reporter and a colleague, Nanayaw Darko from Hitz FM for coming to visit.

It’s unclear when the tests will be done. The family explained that, they are only counting on God and the benevolence of society to pull the rapper through.

Last week, the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) visited and presented him with an undisclosed amount of money to support him.

GHAMRO administrator, Agya Abraham and First Vice Chairman of the association, Ahmed Banda aka Bandex last week presented the money to Sidney, who was also a member of Nananom.

Omanhene Pozo was originally part of Nananom, one of the very first hiplife groups in Ghana. They were vibrant in the late 1990s.

After leaving the group, he pursued a solo career working with highlife greats like Awurama Badu, Alhaji K. Frimpong and C. K. Mann.Omanhene Pozo

Afropop Songs Need More Content To Project Africa – Singer Sona Jobarteh

According to her, most foreigners learn about Africa through music so most Afropop songs should have contents that will educate such people.

“I think it is great. Anything that can come out of the continent and carry us to any other part of the world is good. I feel in terms of being big and promoting Africa, you have to have content and substance in the music you are taking out. Sometimes the messages are lacking in that kind of music. Despite the fact that I love and dance to it because its good, I sometimes wish there was more content in them for people that do not know anything about the continent. These people outside the continent need to learn a lot about us and Afropo songs can do hat magic for u. For me, the only criticism will be for some of the songs to have more content”

Sona who said she inherited the playing of the 21-stringed instrument continued that countries that know about Kora support the genre of music.Sona Jobarteh

“For those countries that are aware of it there is huge interest in it because of the fact that the tradition is so strong. Some countries in Africa no longer have the traditional instruments taking much role in the society at all. One place I visited is Tanzania, they hardly have connections with their traditional music so they find it very amazing that there are cultures in Africa that are still alive and thriving. So they take a lot of inspirations from that.”

The singer who performed at London’s Jazz Café when she was 4 years revealed that she never dreamt of become a world star but always did what made her happy which has brought her this far as a Kora player. To her, she is happy the world has accepted her career.

Talking about some of the challenges she faced when growing up in UK, Sona Jobarteh disclosed that “being in a country that is unfamiliar with those kinds of traditions and the culture, which you represent, that I had a lot of difficulties when I was outside.”

The “Mamamusa” singer also shared how she handled a crowd when her instruments failed on stage.

“The only thing is to be on your feet and draw attention away from what has happened by singing more or giving the other instruments the opportunity to play. Those kinds of moments are really hard to deal with both at the time of happening and after.”

When asked if she will be collaborating with any Ghanaian musician soon, the owner of Amadou Bansang Jobarteh School of Music in Gambian answered positively stating that “a lot of people have talked to me regarding that but it’s just time difference that has been hindering that opportunity.”

Sona Jobarteh will be performing live at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Accra on May 21st.

Let’s Review The VGMA Unsung Category

$
0
0

This year marks the third anniversary of the VGMA Unsung category  of the prestigious Vodafone Ghana Music Awards(VGMA). Winners of the VGMA Unsung categories, MzVee in 2014 and Dark Suburb in 2015 are not doing badly in the music scene.

Despite the fact that, just three years after its introduction, the VGMA Unsung category is living up to its expectations, I feel it needs to be reviewed as it seems there is no clear cut rule or guidelines in how underground acts are nominated in that category.

The VGMA is a popularity scheme with a popular tag on it. Going by that tag, it was  difficult for any underground act to mount such a stage.

Unless of course such an act had featured on a song by an established musician which is huge and popular enough. It is through that medium that such an underground act will get close to the awards and be a part of it.

So in  2014, the organisers of VGMA, Charterhouse, introduced a new category in the scheme. The category; VGMA Unsung was to serve a particular purpose so far as budding musicians are concerned.

Also, the  VGMA Unsung was to provide the platform for some of Ghana’s most promising artistes to showcase their musical talent to the right audiences in order to catapult them to the next level of their music career.

To cut a long story short, the category was made for underground musicians who are still struggling to find their bearings to offer them the opportunity to mount and rock the big stage at the main evening night of the VGMA with the big artistes.

Thus to bring the VGMA experience closer to the underground musicians, spearheaded by GhOne TV, the nominees for the maiden edition of the VGMA Unsung category were announced.

The nominees were MzVee, Cabum, Episode, AK Songstress, Strongman and Eno. They were shortlisted to battle each other for the nod. MzVee  won the category after they had campaigned for votes for months.

The 2015 edition of the VGMA Unsung was won by Dark Suburb, Ghana’s alternative rock band. That year, the nominees were Koo Ntakra, Nero X, Kingzkid, Luther and Mz Yankeey.

This year, the competition is between Feli Nuna, Perez Muzik, Adoma, Wan-O, Ebony and Nii Funny. Good luck to all of them. Whoever emerges winner would be welcomed and embraced on the main awards night.

Unsung can be described as a person who has never showed to the others the activities he can do best. So, nobody will recognise it and he with his talent and his abilities will stay unsung.

Based on the definition, it’s obvious that, over the past three years, artistes considered and nominated in the Unsung category do not belong there as they have gone pass that level of  being labeled unsung. Maybe not all but some of them clearly aren’t unsung.MzVee

2014

For instance, in 2014, and going by the definition; all the nominees in the Unsung category; MzVee, Cabum, Episode, AK Songstress, Strongman and Eno were not mainstream yet but clearly, they  did not aptly fit the Unsung tag since all of them had shown to Ghanaians what activities they can do best.

Before going solo and considered for the Unsung, MzVee had just come out of an all-female group, D3 who were gradually getting attention from Ghanaian music fans. Episode may not be as big as Samini, Shatta Wale or Stonebwoy in that year, but he had made his name performing on some of the biggest shows in that year.

Strongman had just won a rap battle Hip Hop competition and he was all over the place. Eno was also making her name doing covers of different hit songs. Cabum and AK Songstress weren’t sleeping either; they were busy doing their own things. Dark Suburb_opt

2015

In 2015, the category had Dark Suburb, Koo Ntakra, Nero X, Kingzkid, Luther and Mz Yankeey as contenders. The award went to Dark Suburb.

A year prior to the introduction of the category, Koo Ntakra, the Akuapim rapper and Nero X had both won the third edition of MTN Hitmaker and Born Starz reality shows respectively. It was surprising that, they made the Unsung cut. Were they really unsung?

It was more surprising when Nero X with a banging hit Osey, a popular song that even merited the Most Popular Song of the Year category last year didn’t make the list.

His Osey song in 2015 was a bigger hit than Wisa’s Ekikimi and Atom’s cover of Gasmilla’s Telemo song which got him nominated in the awards.

If an act like Nero X could not make the cut for the main awards last year with such a huge hit, why did Wisa and Atom escaped the Unsung this year? Was it his decision to go for Unsung last year because he thought he stood a better chance of winning?

The medium used to nominate acts to be considered into the VGMA Unsung category is strictly by tagging the musician on the awards social media platform including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

So the argument will be that, they didn’t get any tagging for the category hence why they were elevated to the main awards.

Last year, Luther was in Wisa’s situation this year, just that, he didn’t show anything on stage to beef up his popularity. Last year, he had an equally big tune Slow Down featuring Screwface and Arrow.

Not only that, he had been a two time nominee at the BASS Awards and winner of the Best Male Vocalist for 2014/2015, yet he was still made Unsung.

My worry is about their colleagues who didn’t get any attention whatever? For me, those are the real unsung artistes. These are people who haven’t been given the opportunity whatsoever.

What I want to say is that, some of the nominees since the inception of the category clearly are fit to be referred to as unsung. They are not mainstream yet but at the same time they are not unsung.

If an artiste has a hit which is getting rotation on radio and television, on what basis is that artiste unsung?

Based on what happened last year, then Wisa and Atom should have been nominated as Unsung artiste. I think the medium and the category has to be reviewed again for better understanding.

Pride of Ghana, Teye preparing to to lift at a recent event

Ghana’s power lifter Charles Narh Teye has qualified for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games scheduled to come off between 7 to 18 September in Brazil.

He thus becomes the first Ghanaian para athlete to make it to this summer Paralympic Games.

His qualification was confirmed by the National Paralympic Committee this morning.

Teye, nearly missed the boat to the Games as he dislocated his shoulder during training late last year, he however shrugged-off that injury to take part in an International Paralympic Committee sanctioned event in Dubai in February this year, which shot his points build up from the 2015 All African Games in Congo-Brazzaville and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow to earn him a Paralympic.

This would be his second attempt at seeking Paralympic after making an appearance at the London 2012.

He has promised to work hard and make the nation proud this time but has however called for total support from the nation to help him prepare very well for the Games.

Grand Bassam Mastermind Confirms Planned Attack On Ghana, Togo

A man said to be the brain behind terrorist attack at the Grand Bassam Hotel in Ivory Coast has reportedly confirmed Ghana and Togo have been marked for terror strikes.

The Malian national whose identity has not been made public by the National Security Council security officials reportedly revealed this during interrogation by Ivorian security agencies.

The security document, presented as an alert and dated April 9, 2016, was sent to security agencies in Ghana.

The alert opens with the statement “Intelligence gathered by the National Security Council (NSCS), indicates a possible terrorist attack on the country is real.”

The 9-point alert states in part that the choice of Ghana by the terrorists is to “take away the perception that only francophone countries are the target.”

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has executed deadly strikes in Mali, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast.

Their latest strike at an Ivorian beach resort – the Grand Bassam Hotel – claimed about 18 lives, after similar attacks in Burkina Faso claimed more than 30 lives.

According to the alert, Ghana and Togo are the next targets after the attacks on the francophone countries.

The alert also asked security officials at Ghana’s borders to be extra vigilant – especially controls at the northern borders with Burkina Faso.

“You are to conduct thorough profiling of all persons arriving from the perceived high risk countries within the region (Libya, Niger and Mali),” the alert urged Ghana’s security agencies.

The security document reveals the attackers may enter through approved and unapproved entry points.

“In the Ivorian attacks they reportedly entered from Mali using Niger register 4×4 vehicle. They reportedly concealed their weapons and grenade in the vehicles compartment for spare tyres, padded with cushions and bubbled wraps to keep them stable and prevent noise,” the alert revealed.

Ghana’s security agencies have been asked to treat the alert “as very important”.Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

AQIM BACKGROUND

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) is a Salafi-jihadist militant group and U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organization (FTO) operating in the Sahara and Sahel.

The group traces its provenance to Algeria’s civil war in the 1990s and has in the past decade become an al-Qaeda affiliate with regional ambitions. AQIM and its offshoots pose the primary transnational terror threat in North and West Africa.

The flow of militants from the Sahara and Sahel to Syria and Iraq, where thousands of Moroccan and Tunisian citizens have joined terrorist groups, is raising concerns about battle-hardened fighters returning to these relatively stable countries.
