Ghanaian actress, Yvonne Okoro on Tuesday won the love and respect of the people of Wungu in the Walewale community of the Northern Region, when she commissioned, a borehole project to provide water for the town.

For a very long time, the community had battled with water scarcity. Natives including school children walk several kilometers in search of water every day.

As part of Yvonne’s annual charity exercise, she decided to go to the aid of the community by funding the drilling of a borehole.

Business activities in the community on Tuesday came to standstill for a while to give the actress a rousing welcome for the commissioning ceremony which paved way for the borehole to be used.

Commissioning the project, Yvonne said, “It gives me joy to offer a supporting hand to those who need it in society. I hope this project will go a long way to impact positively on the lives of the people of Wungu especially the children and women. I want use this opportunity to thank God and everyone else who supported this project. I also thank African World Airline (AWA) for bringing us this far for a successful commissioning ceremony.”

Yvonne and her team including her friend, TV personality and lawyer, Sandra Ankobiah had earlier paid a courtesy call to the chief of Tamale, Naa Dakpena Alhassan and the chief of Wungu at his palace.

She also visited West Mamprusi District offices and Daa-Gyei Academy, where she advised children at the school to take their lessons serious.

Amidst cultural performances by the Wungu Cultural Troop, natives including, school children as well as other actors from the northern part of the country came out in their numbers to support the Ghana Must Go actress to commission the borehole.

Also in attendance were Hon. Dr. Sagre Bambangi MP for Walewale and Wuni David D, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the West Mamprusi District, who assured the actress, the community will take a good care of the borehole.

“I extend my sincerely gratitude to you for deciding to come here. It is my responsibility as the DCE of the West Mamprusi District to provide water for the people and if you have come to provide water for the people, we are grateful…I want to assure you that we will take good care of the borehole and I am also taking this opportunity to ask others to learn from your kind gesture,” Wuni David added when Yvonne visited his office.

Yvonne Okoro remains one of Ghana’s relevant award winning actresses and producers who are doing well for society. Her latest movie, Ghana Must Go is currently making great impact in Ghana and expected to premiere in Nigeria very soon.

Leading Ghanaian actors gathered today to announce the first Ghanaian movie in history to receive its world premiere at the renowned and prestigious film festival in New York, Tribeca from 13th to 24th April 2016.

Filmed in Ghana and produced by I60 Productions, “Children of the Mountain”  features heavy weight actors including Adjetey Anang, Grace Omaboe (Maame Dokunu), Akofa Edjeani, William Addo (Akpatse) and Agbeko “Bex” Mortty amongst others.

The film is the first feature from writer, director and producer Priscilla Anany who took her short film “Hospitals (Korji)” to Cannes Film Festival in 2013.“childreN of the mountaiN” is about a woman who has a child with cerebral palsy and a cleft lip who believes she can get healing for her child. She wonders from disappointment to disappointment trying to leverage her meagre earnings as a yam trader in the market. The film is set in Accra, Ghana and also a remote village of the Volta region of the country by Lake Volta. The film is in Twi and Ewe and stars a fresh Ghanaian/Nigerian actor called Rukiyat Masud who has done films like “Chelsea”, “Black Beauty” and “Sorrow of Madness”.

Films are submitted in their thousands to the major festivals. Sundance this year had 12,793 films submitted of which they chose only 122 features and 72 shorts. Tribeca received 6,626 films so for Ghanaian film to be selected is a big accomplishment.

Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff founded the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002 with the mission of contributing to the revitalization of lower Manhattan in the wake of the September 11 disaster. Thirteen years later, the Festival has grown at a remarkable pace, and brings together members of the international film community and movie-lovers of the US to the greatest and most diverse city to celebrate the power of film.

Writer?Driector Priscilla Anany said of the news “It took some time to make the film and it got to a point where the struggle to complete the film overshadowed the reason why I had started out to make the film in the first place.  Being accepted into the Tribeca film festival awoke my drive and motivation and reminded me of why this story is important to share with the world any why it’s important to me.

A programmer from Tribeca said of the film “I think the film is extremely powerful and evocative, the story is challenging yet accessible and endearing. It is a great addition to our program and would play well to our audience.”

We are looking forward to the whole country at home and in the diaspora coming out to support this uniquely African film.

“childreN of the mountaiN” has its world premiere in New York on the 17th of April at Regal Battery Park Stadium 11 (RGL) 102 North End Ave, New York, NY 10281 6:30pm

The film gets its Ghana premiere on the 1st of July (Republic Day) at the Silverbird Cinemas, Accra Mall.

Meanwhile for more information on the film one can engage with the team on social media; www.facebook.com/childrenofthemountainfilmTwitter @cotmfilm and Instagram @cotmfilm.

Jordan Ayew’s Aston Villa Relegated After Defeat At Man United

$

Black Stars and Aston Villa striker Jordan Ayew’s participation in the English football second tier, Championship next season has been confirmed with the defeat at Manchester United.

Aston Villa have been relegated to English football’s second tier for the first time since 1987 after defeat at Manchester United.

Marcus Rashford scored the only goal, sweeping Antonio Valencia’s cut-back through goalkeeper Brad Guzan’s legs.

Villa were second best for much of the game, though they did hit a post late on through Rudy Gestede’s volley.

It was a ninth straight loss for the visitors and left them 15 points from safety with only four matches left.

Does ‘anarchy’ beckon for Villa?

European Cup winners in 1982, Aston Villa have a proud history but are facing a turbulent immediate future.

Caretaker manager Eric Black has spoken of the danger of the club falling into “anarchy” at the end of a miserable campaign played out against the backdrop of fan protests against Randy Lerner’s ownership.

Last time Villa were last relegated to the old second division they immediately returned under Graham Taylor and finished second in the top flight the following season.

At Old Trafford they were outplayed for the majority of the game until the introduction of Gestede gave the travelling supporters hope of salvaging something from the day they finally went down.

It was not to be though – and not many of those 1,500 or so supporters will expect their team to be competing in the Champions League by 2018.

Rooney’s return

Victory for United means they keep up the pressure on Manchester City in fourth place. Manuel Pellegrini’s side have a one-point cushion but play Chelsea in Saturday’s 17:30 BST kick-off.

This was an important win in the race for a Champions League spot, and important too for the return of forward Wayne Rooney, who last played in the Premier League on 13 February.

The England captain was not at his best – one heavy touch on the edge of the box saw a golden chance slip away – but he played his part in a solid all-round performance from Louis van Gaal’s team.

The 18-year-old Rashford – who now has seven goals in 12 United appearances – should have added to his brilliantly taken first but prodded wide under pressure in a bright start to the second half, before Juan Mata could only fire straight at Guzan from a short corner.

Gestede almost drew Villa level when striking the post from a corner with just over five minutes to play, but United winger Memphis Depay was also denied by the post soon after – and United were deserved winners.

Celebrity Column: “Down Today, Up Tomorrow” – Peace Hyde | A Piece Of Peace

$
0
0

Hello and welcome to this week’s Piece of Peace, your weekly dose of motivation and inspiration. This week I would like to share with you on the topic, “Down Today, Up Tomorrow”.

I will keep my message as brief as possible today. I just want to encourage those of you reading this that are going through difficult situations at the moment. One thing is certain in life and that is no matter what happens, you will always have bad days and good days. Sometimes we may even get one of those extremely difficult days, which threaten to destroy everything we have worked so hard to build.

The real skill here is learning how to master those challenging days and turning the mess into positivity. We may sometimes feel like we are constantly facing a never-ending bombardment of issues but the truth is, our adversities are the things that help us develop the character we need to face tomorrow’s challenges. Every situation we face is equipping us with new knowledge and life experiences, which help mould our perception of the future, and how to best deal with problems that may arise.

It is never fun when things take a turn for the worst. Trust me I know. This week has been especially difficult. I had a project that I was working on for a number of years which fell through at the last minute. Everything seemed certain and ready for success and I honestly did not see how things collapsed. But I had to remind myself that the failure was making way for something much bigger and greater.

Remember this when something unexpected happens to you next time. You are on a journey of greatness and that means that no one situation can determine your final outcome. You have everything it takes to change your personal circumstances. All you need to do is believe in your abilities and never stop working hard. Like my mentor always says, “when life hands you lemons, you make lemonade”. There is a silver lining in every situation and your ability to recover quickly from setbacks is predominantly determined by your perspective on that situation. Remember whether you think you can or whether you think cannot, you are right on both counts.

Adopt a positive mind-set to the problems that come your way and you will find the negative things that happen to you will not linger for longer than it needs to and no matter what you do, always remember, be yourself because everyone else is taken.

Much Love,

Peace Hyde.

Bright Tetteh Ackwerh has emerged winner of the 2016 Kuenyehia Prize for Contemporary Ghanaian Art (the ‘Prize’), after the Prize’s jury panel selected him from a shortlist of ten impressive artists.

The Accra-based illustrator’s competing artwork titled ‘Tweaa Room: Confrontation’ powered him to the ultimate winner’s prize package of GHS 20,000, taking the crown from last year’s winner Kwame Akoto-Bamfo.

The KNUST-trained artist was announced winner by the chair of the Prize’s jury panel and special guest-of-honour Professor Emeritus El Anatsui, at a packed event held last Thursday evening at Ringway Estates in Accra.

The event had in attendance many people of influence in Ghana’s art scene, including prominent artists, heads of art and cultural institutions, members of the diplomatic corps and some big patrons of the arts in Ghana.

In a short address, Professor Anatsui – who spoke through a ‘linguist’, Nana Oforiatta-Ayim, fellow jury member and founder of the ANO Center for Cultural Research – praised the efforts the Prize is making at helping emerging artists at such a critical time, recalling his own experience participating in a similar contest in the late 1960s, and placing third.

The world-renowned sculptor expressed delight at the rich talents of the shortlisted artists, whose work he described as “strong in character and wonderfully varied in execution”.

Speaking on the hope of Ghana developing a vibrant art scene that could become a regional hub, Prof Anatsui said “this is a fine and reasonable ambition – but it will only happen if a lot of thought and careful attention is first given to creating a sustainable road-map for the development of the infrastructure required to support this young ‘eco-system’ – in order to help it grow strong.

The fundamental component of this ‘eco-system’ is the artist,” emphasising the need to pay attention first to the creators of artistic work.  He praised the efforts of the Artist Alliance Gallery at Labadi, Accra, founded by Professor Ablade Glover, which since its founding has put the artist at the center of all it does, and called for more of such efforts.

Bright Ackwerh was not the only artist rewarded on the night, as three runners-up were also announced, to receive prize awards. Deryk Owusu-Bempah took the first-runner up prize of GHS 2,500 for his photograph titled ‘Black Star Square’ while Setor Fiadzigbey emerged second runner-up for his illustration “Lost Sci-fi”, also taking home GHS 2,500.

There was a surprise element when for the first time, a third runner-up was revealed. It went to Maxwell Boadi for his painting “Exodus” earning him a GHS 2,000 prize. All four winners will also benefit from training, coaching and mentorship from select professionals and established artists.

The Kuenyehia Prize for Contemporary Ghanaian Art, in its second year, received over one hundred entries this year, signifying a telling need for more efforts at instituting artist development schemes to help the most important people in Ghana’s promising art scene; artists.Prof Anatsui & Prof Glover

Lord Kenya Must Leave Sarkodie Alone | Best Ghanaian rapper of all time & Successful Ghanaian rapper of all time

$
0
0

To say that Ghanaians have missed you as a rapper and a musician would be stating the obvious.

Ghanaians have not only missed your exploits, they have also missed your wonderful stage performances. There was always something special about your performances.

Yes, we have missed you! When I say we, I mean those of us who witnessed the introduction of the Hiplife genre by Reggie Rockstone in the mid-1990s.

I mean those of us who witnessed your rise from the bottom to the top of the Hiplife ladder without the help of any social media platforms.

Those days, it was pure hard work and nothing else. How I missed those days ehh!

I mean those of us who saw you become bigger when you featured on Daasebre Gyamena’s hit track, Kokooko, and made that track an instant hit with your great raps.

I mean those of us who saw your emergence as a rapper from the ranks to rule the Ghana music scene with little or virtually no help whatsoever.

I mean those of us who saw you play an active role in making Hip life what it is today.

In your days, there wasn’t any craze for the release of singles, so we missed your era when releasing an album was a big deal and showed how creative and serious an artiste was.

In those days, people were sceptical about putting their money into the production and promotion of music.

There is a generational difference now and today, things are much different than it used to be.

Lord Kenya, you belong to the old school of Hiplife because you were there when it all started.

Today, there are a whole lot of Hiplife artistes who are not necessarily talented but they are still up there at the top of the game. You must just leave it as such, as there is little you can do about that.

Abandoning Hiplife for the work of the Lord hence becoming Evangelist Lord, Kenya, was the doing of the Almighty, but Ghanaians greatly miss you.

The reason for this letter is simple. A few days ago, you granted an interview on Starr FM’s Starr Chat with Bola Ray and labelled Sarkodie as a braggart and refuted the claim that he is the best rapper in Ghana.

According to you, Sarkodie does not have enough albums to be called the best rapper in Ghana. In all, you have seven albums to your credit and for a Hiplife artiste, and this is a big achievement. This certainly gives you the right to make some bold pronouncement.

“You don’t become the best rapper in one year, it takes decades before we say someone is the best, do you know how many years he has to work for it?.. (To be honest, how many albums does he [Sarkodie] have? I’m asking them to stop bragging…he [Sarkodie] hasn’t arrived yet and has to take his time.”

You also think that, Okyeame Kwame is rather the best rapper in Ghana because you saw him much like a father when you used to rap with him.

“Okyeame Kwame is the best because he knows what he is doing, he’s the one I used to rap with, and he’s like a father.”

Even though you are considered by many as Ghana’s best rapper of all time with myself sharing such sentiment, like I said earlier, there is a generational difference between yourself and Sarkodie and I feel you should have given the young man some respect.

Fortunately, I do not think you hate or detest Sarkodie but whether you like it or not, Sarkodie has achieved more than you did in your time. The young man does not have any competition now. He is on another planet.

I think that, you should have thought about the generational differences before making your argument. Sarkodie by far is currently Ghana’s biggest rapper with a staggering number of followers and with a rich repertoire of hits to his credit.

He was not the first Ghanaian to be nominated for the BET but he was the first Ghanaian to win that huge accolade for Ghana.

He was also nominated when Ghana’s Stonebwoy won it in 2015. He may not be the best rapper in your eyes but he’s the most successful Ghanaian rapper of all time.

As you may be aware, every rapper has their own flaws. You had yours as well. Sarkodie has been a braggart, for a very long time.

That is annoying but certainly, it has not changed the fact that he is loved by many and appreciated and he keep soaring just like that.

Your era was not like that; at least that explains why he was not in your era. There are things that happened in your era which makes total sense then. Today, those same things will not be entertained and that is life and its happenings.

In your era, you needed to work extra hard to be really noticed, even though there were not too many rappers as compared to today.

In your era, there were not any social media platforms to aid musicians in promoting their works should the DJs and radio presenters shun them.

Today, those platforms and even more are available to the new crops of musicians. That is the whole generational difference that I’m talking about.

Your argument suggests that, what Sarkodie and co are doing today would not have been appreciated in your era.

Fair enough, but what shows that what you and your colleagues were doing then will be loved in present day Ghana?

It is very disappointing reading all the comments that people are passing about you because of your opinion and I feel that, as a man of God, it absolutely makes sense to shun certain things.

Bola Ray has a way of getting answers from people he interviews, but as a man of God, I believe that, you should have declined to answer some of the questions that he posed to you, especially the one regarding Sarkodie.

Alternatively, your answers should have been in a more diplomatic manner than how you went about it.

I personally love you and consider myself as one of your loyalists but now it is Sarkodie’s time. You had your time, so allow the young man to enjoy his era bragging and all.

As you know, nobody stays on top forever, and when it’s time for him to make way for the next big musician, he or you or Ghanaians cannot prevent that.

This is coming from a real Lord Kenya fan, so the issue about hating should be put in the dustbin forever.

CAF Confederations Cup: Medeama Set To Knock-Out Al-Ahly Shendi Today

Two-time FA Cup champions Medeama SC have set their sight on making the group stages of the on-going CAF Confederations Cup with a win over visiting Sudanese club side Al-Ahly Shendi at the Sekondi Essipun Sports Stadium this afternoon.

The Mauve and Yellows took a giant leap towards achieving that enviable feat, which would be the first ever in the history of the club, a fortnight ago when they drew 0-0 in Shendi, Sudan.

As the surviving Ghanaian team in the CAF inter-club competition this year following the elimination of Ashantigold from the CAF Champions League, Medeama have given a very good account of themselves since drawing a bye in the early stages of the competition and seeing off Libyan club Al-Ittihad Tripoli to get to this stage.

Although they faulted in their last competitive game losing 2-0 at the Essipun Stadium to home side Sekondi Hasaacas last week, Coach Tom Strand and his charges have put that defeat at the back of their mind and bent on sealing a historic qualification to the group stage of the competition with a massive win tomorrow.

The team is not getting carried away with the away point they carry into this game, captain of the side Muntari Tagoe has stated that they are not going to get complacent at all in today’s game, knowing that the visitors are equally as good as them.

“We started a job back in Sudan and we need to finish that job perfectly today in front of our home fans and Ghanaians as a whole.”

According to him it’s not going to be an easy battle this afternoon but in the end they would surely grab the qualification ticket into the group zone of the competition.

Coach Tom Strand has a full squad to pick his men to deliver victory for Medeama SC and Ghana as well as the likes of midfield general Kwesi Donsu, Eric Kwakwa, Malik Akowuah and sensational striker  Mohammed Abass whose  brace helped the side advance to this stage of the competition

Al-Ahly Shendi on the other hand, has goalkeeper Yassin Yussuf to reply on in post with versatile Mujahid Farooq and striker Ahmed Nasreldin, Ivorian-import Mohamed Sela, Nigeria-born defender Malik Isaac and veteran forward Kelechi Osunwa to count on for a possible victory.

The visitors are good away side having reached the second round of the continental competition on the away goal rule after a 2-2 aggregate draw with Congolese side Saint Eloi Lupopo and this is one danger the Medeama lads are very wary off ahead of the game this afternoon.

Winner of this game would advance to the play-off round where they will be joined by seven other clubs as well as the eight losers from the CAF Champions League second round to fight for a group stage action.

Referee Fidel Gomes from Guinea Bissau has been appointed to officiate the game which has the gates pegged at Gh¢5, Gh¢10 and Gh¢20 respectively.

The management of Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club Limited has stated that the club is not in crisis as being purported in the media lately.

In a press statement signed by the club’s Communication Director, Kwame Opare Addo, it said that the club is trying quietly to manage an unusual and what it views as unreasonable and strange situation over the past few weeks to ensure that it continues to build its brand, provide good entertainment and protect the image and integrity of those who have created those situation in the first place.

The statement noted that the recent conduct of the club’s head coach Kenichi Yatsuhashi is not acceptable and they would address it professionally and in accordance with the club’s code of ethics.

“The Club wishes to assure its supporters and the general public that although it will not want to address the issues raised by coach Yatsuhashi in public, the picture being painted is not entirely correct.”

“Is it not strange for people to turn around and accuse the club of insensitivity when only a few weeks ago these same people accused the club of over-pampering its players and paying too much winning bonuses?” the statement quizzed.

According to the club, it would want to continue to remain professional and address these issues internally and can assure its supporters once again that it is committed to honouring all obligations to its employees and strive to be the best employer in the sporting industry, adding that “indeed the club is very proud of the conditions of service it offers to its employees including the Head Coach and would continue to improve on it and make it the reference point in the country.”

The statement assured all that it would be distracted in its effort to “properly” position the brand and would continue to always act in the best interest of the Club.

PNA Dance Squad is one of Ghana’s hottest dance groups.

There are lots of professions that each and every one wants to do. The founder of the PNA Dance Squad, Anita Josephine sees dancing to be another profession one can take up as a full time business or job and therefore cannot be overlooked.

According to Miss Anita Josephine who is hugely recognized for her excellent and amazing dance moves in some popular Ghanaian music videos such as Lobi by R2Bees, Kpagam by 4×4, p3p33p3 by Criss Waddle, Seihor by Castro, Be Mine by Jupiter and many others realizes that the art of dance is entertaining and profitable not only here in Africa but the world at large as it enables one to showcase to the world her gift just as a doctor or footballer etc.

Hence children who find dancing to be a talent and therefore working towards improving and making a living from it should be given support by parents and the community at large.

The PNA Dance Squad has new faces of dancers with much energy and wish to be encouraged by others. The whole management in Ghana and in USA is making it possible to make this project a success.
