With the X Factor singing competition drawing to an end, the atmosphere at Dream Studio, Ikeja, Lagos, during the penultimate Results show was unusually cautious. Head or tail, it was always going to be a bombshell. It was Pheel, Vicky, DJ Switch, Princess Pat or Eshun to go home! And any of these can also win the star prize.

“It’s always hard seeing acts go home, what’s your frame of mind this evening?” show host Toolz asked Onyeka.

“It’s very sad because the contestants and judges have worked so hard. They are now international. We advise them to be strong”, Onyeka said. MI added, “I agree with Onyeka; these guys have made it this far, out of thousands of talented people. Anytime, anybody leaves, it’s sad”.

“Reggie, you are the only judge who has all his contestants gone and who would be the deciding factor tonight. What would you base your decision on?”, Toolz asked the third judge. “I’ll base my judgments on entertainment, quality and the X Factor. I’m going to be fair because I have the swing vote. I ask for Solomon’s wisdom”, he finished thoughtfully.

Just as the audience was eager to know the bottom two contestants, Toolz announced a surprise performance by Glo ambassador Irene Logan and the Ghanaian entertainer delivered a very powerful performance.

“Pheel”, Toolz announced without further ado, “and Vicky are contestants with the least votes this week”, she finished off as the audience let out a loud gasp.

“Onyeka, are you surprised?” Toolz asked. “Of course I am. But it could have been any of them at this stage. It’s a game, we have to play it!”, Onyeka declared. Toolz then turned to MI. “This is the first time any of your acts is up for eviction, what do you have to say?” “I told them last week that it’s bound to happen sooner or later. Everybody is a winner at this point”, MI responded.

Pheel was the first to sing for survival as the audience cheered him on. “Go Pheel, we love you!” some sections of the crowd chanted. With very energetic hip swings, he delivered a fast-tempo hip hop version of Oliver de Coque’s “Biri ka Mbiri.” Vicky leapt on stage next, packing power behind her vocals. She sang from the bottom of her heart, giving all she had to the song.

“Judges, it’s time to make tough decisions”, the host said to the judges. “I love them both, they have great vocals. Pheel, God will lift you to prosper, just as I pray for Vicky. Having said that, you know I have to save my own. I go with Vicky”, Onyeka said.

According to MI, “Both of them caught my eyes right from the auditions and I could have put money on any of them to make it. Regardless, you guys are winners, but I go with Pheel”, he said emotionally.

“Reggie, I don’t envy you”, Toolz said as everybody waited to see who Reggie would save.

“I feel really important right now”, Reggie smiled as the crowd roared with excitement. “Both of you gave great performances. But I feel that my sister, Vicky, sang harder than Pheel. Saying that doesn’t mean Pheel didn’t sing well. I’m sorry Pheel, but Vicky is my girl!” he pronounced, thus making Pheel the last guy to leave the competition.

Sarkodie did not create Azonto!

Sarkodie

“You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time. – Abraham Lincoln

At a seminar organised for some selected arts writers in Ghana at the University of Ghana campus not too long ago, a music lecturer educated myself and my colleagues on the foundations of Azonto.

He said the new phenomenon called Azonto did not just come into existence by itself or by accident. It was traced to a traditional dance called Kpanlogo of the people of the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.

Due to the above, we can collectively forgive pugilist and ‘comedian’ Braimah Kamoko aka Bukom Banku when he told Ghanaians sometime back that Azonto originated from him. But we cannot forget how Sarkodie recently deceived the whole world on a BBC Africa show about the invention of Azonto. Records must be set straight. Sarkodie did not create Azonto!

In the interview with BBC Africa’s Paul Bakibinga, Sarkodie spoke about varied issues, highlights of which were centered on Azonto, a dance he categorically stated that he invented but other people are gradually taking to the next level.

On BBC Africa, Sarkodie said, “You know Azonto was meant to be but I was lucky to be the first person to bring it out. I gave birth to it but now people are taking it to the next level.”

How did Sarkodie bring the Azonto out? How did he give birth to it when he only helped to popularise it?  Sarkodie, please come again.

It would be appropriate if he came back to correct that fallacy since he has become a laughing stock for saying that but knowing how is he, I doubt if he would do that.

First of all, Azonto is not a genre of music. It’s a form of dance. It is an expressive type of dance, dance with an attitude which involves rigorous body movement to mimic everyday activities.

The basic body movements of the dance include washing, ironing, driving, boxing and shaving.

Why rapper Sarkodie will lay claim to ownership of Azonto is beyond my understanding and perhaps that of many well meaning Ghanaians who have been following the Azonto craze. Ever since he made that assertion, the reaction to that has been met with mixed feelings.

Sarkodie himself is learning the dance from the public because he doesn’t even know how to do the dance he claims he invented.

Growing up, the term Azonto was used to refer to a lady who is promiscuous. I cannot readily name or pinpoint the person behind the creation of that term but certainly I know it’s not Sarkodie. Prior to Sarkodie’s release of his You Go Kill Me song which had him thinking and boasting of creating Azonto, Ghanaians were dancing the Azonto to Cash Unit and Castro’s song Ayoo and other songs like African Girl by Castro featuring Asamoah Gyan. I believe we all remember Asamoah Gyan’s dance at the World Cup whenever he scored a goal.

It was also during that time that, Gasmilla released his Aboodatoi video but then people were busy learningAsamoah Gyan’s dance which has resemblance to the current Azonto and to some of us, it’s not surprising that, it has metamorphosed into Azonto.

When Gasmilla dropped his Aboodatoi song and video coupled with his crazy Azonto dance, it became like another level of the dance, so people started doing all the moves.

Due to its growing popularity and the demand for it, Ghanaian producers started taking advantage of its rhythm, produced similar beats that go with the dance and it has spread to every part of the continent and even beyond.

Gasmilla is a good “Azonto” dancer. I believe Ghanaians first saw the dance as it is now  from Gasmilla. How was Gasmilla able to do the Azonto dance so perfectly? I don’t know but certainly, he didn’t learn it from Sarkodie who doesn’t know the movement and was by then still learning. I think he’s still learning.

Sarkodie cannot even say he made Azonto go international. Fuse ODG featuring  Tiffany on his song titled Azonto can take that credit for that any day.

The Azonto dance was on the scene before Sarkodie released his video. So how did he create something which was there before his song and video? Who is he trying to deceive? The dance has been there long ago.

Sarkodie only made the term Azonto popular through his music because he’s bigger than the artistes who started the movement musically.

But then making a term which was already in existence before he was born popular doesn’t mean he “created” or “invented” it.

For me, it was the public that virtually named the dance Azonto because by then his song was a hit and went well with the dance.

Sarkodie must know that, there is an extent to which an artiste can boast and he must not go beyond that because all of us cannot be fooled at the same time.

Former Zimbabwean representative in the Big Brother Africa: The Chase reality show, Pokello Nare, is expected to leave for Ghana tomorrow to attend Ghana’s BBA representative Elikem Kumordzie’s four welcome parties.

Elikem, who is now referred to as Zimbabwe’s son-in-law because of his relationship with Pokello, told NewsDay yesterday he would introduce his fiancé to his family members back home.

Elikem has already purchased a return ticket to Ghana for Pokello, who will spend the rest of the month in Ghana.

Asked about wedding bells, Elikem said only time would tell, adding: “I love Pokello so much and hope we will go far with our relationship. Things are going on well so far, I can’t complain.”

Elikem jetted into the country on Friday afternoon and received a warm reception from hordes of Zimbabwean fans who mobbed him at Harare International Airport and at two of his welcome parties in Harare and Bulawayo over the weekend.

“Zimbabwean fans have been amazing. It’s so unbelievable as the love is just too much. Zimbabwe is a beautiful place and I will take all these memories with me to Ghana,” Elikem said.

Over the weekend, Elikem had the opportunity to meet Pokello’s family and her son whom Elikem had always wanted to meet.

Pokello’s family members were also introduced to Elikem’s brother, Troy, who accompanied Elikem to Zimbabwe.

The two brothers seemed to have blended in well as they, together with part of Pokello’s family, travelled to Bulawayo and had a family retreat together.

In Bulawayo, Pokello and Elikem took time off to donate blankets and goods to Thembiso Children’s Home.

…Only African

Ghana’s chances at this year’s Miss World event has been handed a major boost.

Naa Okailey Shooter, Miss Ghana 2012, and the country’s representative at the 2013 edition, late Monday, made it to the list of finalists in the Beach Fashion category, one of six Fast Track events.

She made it to a list of eleven countries, as the only African. The other countries include Indonesia the hosts, France, Philippines, Italy, China PR, Jamaica, Moldova, Spain, Ukraine, and Brazil.

Contestants took part in a Poolside demonstration of how to tie a Sarong, and were judged accordingly.

An exciting development which should better her chances of taking a successful shot at the ultimate, she scaled through a first round list of 33 countries (out of 131), and made it to the second round, after which the finalists were chosen.

All eleven finalists will take part in a special photoshoot session on Tuesday September 10. The winner will be announced during the grand finale on September 28.

Qualifying for the finals of a Miss World Fast Track event, and winning as well, enhances a contestant’s chance of making an impact in the finals.

The other Fast Track events include Sports and Fitness, Talent Competition, Top Model, Beauty With A Purpose and World Fashion Design.

This year’s event is being keenly contested for. The selection of the Beach Fashion finals comes a day after a successful Opening Ceremony was held to formally introduce the contestants.

Singer Ryan has released his debut single “I No Care” produced by Ephraim.

Ryan comments: “When I first went into the studio I wanted to write something deep, something that will really touch everyone’s heart. I was struggling and I notice that it’s because I was trying too hard. That’s when we started talking about my past experiences. I was telling Ephraim the producer about a past relationship. We were laughing because I was so young at the time. Within 40 minutes we had the song. The song is based on a true story but I can laugh and have fun about it now. It’s a fun song. There’s a story in there, but I really want people to have fun, at least with this song”

Guru over the weekend proved the fine artist that he is, when he put up an excellent show at the third edition of Roll Kall, dubbed No Yawa.

Headlining a concert that also featured performances from Guru, Gemini and Double among others, he literally brought the house down, dishing out some of his recent hits, to the delight of the thousands who turned up.

The event brought together students and immediate past students of thousands of second cycle institutions across the country.

They took part in competitions in Basketball, 5-Aside Football, Rap and Dance Battle, Fashion Show, Jama, Pool, and Jama among other exciting side attractions.

In it’s third year, Roll Kall remains Ghana’s biggest outdoor event for second cycle institutions.

This year’s event was also used to formally launch the ‘No Yawa’ campaign, being spearheaded by DKT International Ghana, distributors of popular condom brands Fiesta, Kiss and Lydia.

“The project seeks to address the high unmet reproductive health needs of Ghana’s youth,” officials have said.

“No Yawa will be the support service where Ghanaian youth will be educated on issues regarding sex, which will then empower them to make informed sex choices.”

Planet One Multimedia and YFM powered No Yawa Roll Kall.

It was sponsored by FIESTA Condoms, Kiss Condoms, Lydia Female Contraceptive, and with support from Papas Pizza.
