A scene from the play as he always does, Uncle Ebo Whyte, ably supported by his Roverman Productions, was once again at his best when he treated the myriad of problems in relationships in his latest play, Men Run; Women Cry over last weekend.

Becky walks into a salon to be made up for the happiest day of her life since she is getting married to the love of her life, Yohan. Unknown to her, however, her soon-to-be husband had suddenly fallen in love with a lady he met at the mall that day and had followed to the same salon.

Yohan is ready to sacrifice his wedding for the new lady because in his words “My eyes were closed but now they are open”.

What has come over Yohan all of a sudden? Is it love at first sight or something more sinister like a charm that has hypnotized Yohan to fall in love with her new found?

Now it is up to Efe, the salon owner to find a way of saving Becky and Johan’s marriage. The tale is given a different twist with the incessant demands of Augusta who never appreciates Jimmy her boyfriend even after she has virtually turned him into her personal chauffeur.

Augusta feels she is very beautiful and so can catch the eye of any man or even find a better man than Jimmy who had for the past three years swallowed all her ‘nonsense’ and ‘bossy’ attitude.

Men Run: Women Cry brings out some of the problems in relationships among which are mistrust, unfaithfulness and disrespect.

It is the third play from Roverman productions this year after Apartment N1 and What’s My Name?

There will be a repeat show at the National Theatre next weekend, September 7 and 8.

Nominations for the 10th Annual Channel O Africa Music Awards were announced today, revealing an open field in the race to claim Africa’s most prestigious music awards.

Nominees in the 14 categories include multiple double nods for over 10 artists, from East, West and Southern Africa, reflecting the outpouring of world-class music videos on the continent over the past year. It’s now up to fans to vote for their favourites in this public-voted event, with more than two months for the continent’s music fans to have their say.

This year’s nominees list features many longstanding members of the African music scene, among them Zimbabwe’s Buffalo Souljah (“Basawine” for Most Gifted Ragga Dancehall Video), South Africa’s Oskido (“Tsa Mandebele” for Most Gifted African Southern), and Mozambique’s Lizha James (“Vais Rochar” with Anselmo Ralph for Most Gifted Female).

The list of nominees is also bursting with new faces, including the five contenders in the Most Gifted Newcomer category –Nigeria’s Lola Rae (“Watch My Ting Go”) and Burna Boy (“Tonight”), South Africans Moneoa (“Is’Bhanxa”), Idols SA Season 8 winner Khaya Mthethwa (“Move”) and Kenya’s Victoria Kimani (“Mtoto”).  And the multiplicity of genres emerging in this highlight category of the 10th Annual Channel O Africa Music Video Awards – from Dance Pop to contemporary Afrobeat and Afro-fusion – provides a brilliant glimpse into the diversity of sounds that currently define Africa’s music scene.

6 Ghanaian artists have also been nominated in 5 categories, including Most Gifted Hip Hop Video and Most Gifted Africa West. They are DBlack and Joey B, R2Bees, E.L and M.anifest, Chase, Fuse ODG and Wyclef as well as Jayso and Sarkodie.

To celebrate a decade of recognising the best African contemporary music talent, the 10th Annual Channel O Africa Music Awardshas expanded the prestigious Most Gifted Video of the Year category to 12 nominees, increasing the pressure on nominees in the most fiercely fought category at the awards.

The category again reveals the mix of newcomers and established artists at this year’s event – a signal of the growing maturity of Africa’s music scene.

South African duo Mafikizolo’s “Khona” is up for Most Gifted Video of the Year as well as Most Gifted Dance Video, and Nigeria’s P Square proves their ongoing popularity with the nomination of “Alingo” for the Most Gifted Video of the Year as well as Most Gifted African West.

But the Most Gifted Video of the Year category also includes hotshot newcomers, among them Kenya’s Xtatic whose track with Priddy Ugly and AKA, “Hit ‘Em Up” is making a strong bid for the title (as well as Most Gifted Duo Group or Featuring). AKA himself is making his presence felt at this year’s awards: alongside his featuring spots with Xtatic and Zeus, his video “Jealously” is in the running for Most Gifted Video of the Year and Most Gifted Hip Hop Video.

Another nominee in the Most Gifted Video of the Year category is Kenya’s STL whose “Stella Stella Stella” has also put her in contention for Most Gifted Female where she’s up against Lizha James (Vais Rochar”), South Africa’s Zonke (“Feelings”) and Toya DeLazy (“Heart”)as well as Nigeria’s Tiwa Savage (“Without My Heart” featuring Don Jazzy).

Most Gifted Male includes Botswana’s Zeus featuring AKA and Tumi, “#Datswasup” (also in the running for Most Gifted Video of the Year) along with Nigeria’s Iyanya (“Flavour”) and Wizkid (“Azonto”), South Africa’s Donald (“Over The Moon”) and Tanzania’s Ay featuring Marco Chali (“Party Zone”).

Whether it’s in the heavy hitting categories, or the genre and regional categories, there’s no doubting that the 10th Annual Channel O Africa Music Video Awards have all the makings of a thrilling affair when the LIVE event takes place on Saturday, 30 November at Walter Sisulu Square, in Kliptown Soweto, South Africa.

Just who will win Africa’s biggest awards on the night is now in the hands of fans! Don’t Judge Me – Okyeame Kwame’s Blog

Every day we judge other people by our standards, failing to acknowledge that we have failed as a people to provide the necessary family and social interventions for the have-nots.

Please read this poem and listen to the song which is my next message for this messed age…

Ghana no know me
Twenty two million people and I’m still so lonely
Live or die it’s all on me
Live a lie no not me
Then the streets that holds me
Moulds me
Tells me
To make shots like Koby
Na dabi menso m3y3 obi [translated as SO TO BECOME A FUTURE SOMEBODY]
Mummy can’t stand and daddy cares not
Looking forward to this love that never turns up
So I’m running to the same world rejecting me
Ironically they are accepting me as their enemy
The man in me my Moses sets me free
The thorns you see are roses best believe
I joined the gang of hopeless many meees
The rugged the endless poverty
So I turned to robbery
To escape this life of poverty
Now my home is the jail
You can stand out and judge if you will

My family no know me
I am a tree in the forest and I’m still so lonely
Fresh or dry it’s all on me
Live to die no not me
The society hates me breaks me
Makes me angry that my mum’s boyfriend rapes me
As a girl I’ve got to show bravery
Mummy can’t talk and daddy cares not
Looking forward to this love that never turns up
So I am going through this world thinking life is dead
And a happy ending is in a book I read
I make I red I will kill for a thorny bed
Without a bakery how am I to make my bread
Life is a curse to find God is to be blessed
But I can only do that if I can find me first
On the street I am a prostitute
Without skills what am I supposed to do?
Now my home is the jail
You can stand out and judge me if you will

These clothes covering my bones
Are made for me alone
These clothes covering my skin
You cannot fit in
Nobody knows nobody knows all I have been through
Nobody knows nobody knows all u have been through
So don’t judge me

Don’t Judge Me

Ghanaian Professor Nii Quaynor talks to CNN

If you’re reading this somewhere in Africa, then perhaps you should thank Nii Quaynor.

The Ghanaian professor is known as “Africa’s father of the internet,” a web pioneer who helped establish some of the continent’s first online connections.

For some 20 years now, soft-spoken Quaynor has been at the forefront of web development across Africa. He is the first African to be elected to the board of ICANN, the internet corporation for assigned names and numbers. He’s also played an important part in launching the African Network Operators Group and AfriNIC, the African internet numbers registry.

As a result, Quaynor was recently inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame, lauded as an instrumental figure “in the early design and development of the internet.” He is today chairman of Ghana’s information technology agency and a professor at the country’s Cape Coast University.

CNN’s African Voices spoke to Quaynor about the role of the internet in Africa’s development and his dreams for the continent’s digital future. An edited version of the interview follows.

CNN: How did you get the title of father of the internet in Africa?

Nii Quaynor: Actually I don’t know, but perhaps I made a lot of effort to get my colleagues to understand and to participate and to begin to contribute to the internet. And I have been fortunate with a very good educational background and so I also wanted to impart the knowledge and I was a major contributor in building some of the important technical institutions that make up the internet ecosystem in Africa. In the process of doing that a lot of people perhaps felt that my leadership was good for them, and you might say, gave me that kind of description.

CNN: What is the state of the internet in the continent?

NQ: The health of the internet in Africa is good; we have good connectivity, at least to major capital cities; we also have good wireless through the mobile companies and other forms of connectivity, so connectivity is becoming less of a barrier, except that we are still working on the affordability side of that connectivity.

The part that we are yet to, in some sense, make headway is both in the use as well as in we being part of the production side of services for the internet.

We don’t have many businesses developing content or hosting content or doing e-commerce — we have some banks trying to do internet banking, meaning we having companies beginning to adopt it, but we really haven’t taken hold of it. Some of it may be because of inadequate policies, because our policies historically have been about the transmission side of things and so we need to take another look at how a country thinks about developing its internet.

So we have a big challenge — actually, we see it as an opportunity. Connectivity is not the problem, now it’s shifting to the industry and we need to really build strong industries that will serve the needs of the one billion people in Africa.

CNN: Do African governments understand the need for connectivity?

NQ: I think governments now do understand; for most governments it’s important. They may not know what they want to do with it, but they understand it’s very important. That sometimes explains why government actions are seen as not coordinated or erratic, because they think it’s very important but they yet don’t have a full, sufficient understanding to know exactly how they want to interact with it or manage it or grow it. But certainly they recognize it is very important and many in governments are engaging with the internet technical community and other multi-stakeholder organizations to support them to evolve.

We do understand that usually policy lags behind technology, so some of these sorts of conflicts would occur, but I think we have weathered the storm — Africa is going beyond those days and now recognizes the importance of it. They are battling with controlling it, and soon we’ll convince everyone that there is no need and that the right thing to do is to discipline it and begin to adopt it and make it do the right things for us and help define what Africa wants from the internet, which is not very obvious yet.

CNN: What is your hope for Africa in the future?

NQ: My hope for Africa in the future is that Africa will own its portion of the internet. Africa should strive to participate on its own terms on the internet, not leave it to chance to be determined.

Africa can indeed determine how it wants to play in the internet and Africa should ensure that it is able to create the right policy environment for the internet to grow.

Pokello’s age not a big deal for Elikem #BBATheChase

$

And why not? The couple who were voted the show’s most romantic housemates probably wanted to send a signal that what they started in the house was real and not fake as many suggested.

Though there was a hint of a possible relationship back in the house and later confirmation by the couple themselves after the show, a lot of people have doubted the sustainability of Elikem 24, and 27-year-old Pokello’s relationship.

Following the talk about their age difference which seems to have created a lot of “buzz” recently, Elikem says he was not worried about age as a factor in choosing a partner he wants to be with. Elikem is three years younger than Pokello.

Speaking with Showbiz last Tuesday, he said  though a lot of people have questioned the rationale for being an “item” with the older Pokello, he could not be bothered about their age difference.

“I don’t know why people would want to make a fuss about our relationship because of the age difference. If I find some qualities of a virtuous wife in a woman, I don’t know what age has got to with it.

“I went to the house not attached to any woman. By God’s grace, I found someone like Pokello and I don’t know why we both cannot start on a good note because of age factor.

“ I don’t feel younger at all and I’m very much okay.  I have dated a lady five years older than me before so the age difference between Pokello and I is actually not a big deal for me,” he stated.

He dismissed claims that he was caught in a love triangle with housemates Feza, Fatimah and Pokello before finally settling on the Zimbabwean lady.

“I was never a playboy or confused as people are suggesting. The truth is that I made moves on Feza because I thought she was a nice person I could start something with but she turned me down because her culture frowned on a woman dating a younger guy.

“She also made me understand that she was in love with Oneal and I had to respect her decision. As for Fatimah, she was just a friend and nothing more than that,” Elikem added.

On life in the Big Brother house, Elikem dispelled the public perception that most of the happenings in the House were staged.

“You have no idea how difficult it is to be locked up in a house with no radio and television. It is really a difficult situation and whatever viewers saw was100 percent real”.

He was rather hesitant to comment on Pokello’s sex tape with her ex-boyfriend because that was in the past and he was looking forward to the future with Pokello.

Elikem said he was not bothered by the cultural differences that exist between Ghana and Zimbabwe because from what he learnt from Big Brother, Africans are one people and marrying Pokello would have nothing to do with her nationality.

Asked how soon Ghanaians should expect to hear the wedding bells, he let out an infectious laugh and said : “It is too early to talk about marriage but I think things are looking good for us. We just started and waiting for what the future holds for us.”

Pokello is expected to be in Ghana on September 13 for Elikem’s welcome party at the Aphrodisiac Night Club and another at the Vienna City night club in Kumasi a week later.

For now, Elikem says he is taking advantage of the popularity gained from Big Brother to build his brand and acting career which took off before he entered the Big Brother house.

“I already have three scripts and I know people will enjoy that aspect of my life apart from the fashion business. Ghanaians should expect nothing but the best of Elikem ‘the tailor’ as I journey into the world of show business,” he stated.

Elikem was the first Ghanaian housemate to get to the finals of the Big Brother Africa show since its inception seven years ago. Before Big Brother, Elikem had a taste of the make- belief industry when he featured in two films by Abdul Salam Mumuni titled Cheaters and Hunters.

Five executive members of the organising committee for the Accra International Film Festival (AIFF) will leave Accra on Monday, September 9  for Canada to attend  the ongoing  38th  annual Toronto International  Film Festival (TIFF).

They are Kwame Addo (Executive Director); David Dontoh (Director of Communications); Nuhu Issah (Operations Director); Derick Alorvor (Director of Logistics and Sponsorship) and Darlington Acolatse (Publicist).

The TIFF 2013 took off last Thursday, September 5, and will end on Sunday, September 15. A total of 366 films from 70 countries are scheduled to be screened, including 146 world premieres.

David Dontoh told the Daily Graphic that their invitation by the organisers of the Toronto festival was facilitated by the former Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, Trudy Kernighan who showed a keen interest in the Accra International Film Festival held last June.

He said arrangements had been made for them to share ideas with the Toronto festival organisers on how to get some Canadian productions into the next Accra festival.

Kwame Addo also stated that there was the possibility of the AIFF delegation meeting with top Canadian actor, Keanu Reeves to explore the chance of him coming to Accra next year as a guest of their festival.

Keanu Reeves has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and is known for his roles in films such as Point Break, The Matrix trilogy, Constantine, Youngblood, The Tracey Ullman Show and American Playhouse.

The next Accra International Film Festival has been scheduled for May 2014 at the Kempinski Hotel.

We all know the insults that some Ghanaians hauled on Kevin-Prince Boateng when he retired from playing for Ghana. It’s no longer important since that decision has been rescinded hence his call up for the crucial Zambia match which Ghana won by 2-1.

This picture below of Kevin-Prince Boateng with Ghana flag was captured gathering support for his teammates before the commencement of the last Group D encounter between Ghana and Chipolopolo from Zambia in Kumasi last Friday.
