The president of UT Holdings and former CEO of UT Bank Prince Kofi Amoateng has said that he doesn’t pay tithe because “it is my hard earned money and I should put it where I want to put it.”

He told Nii Arday Clegg host of Starr FM Morning Show that even though he believes in God, he only goes to church once in a long while if there is a wedding or funeral but he doesn’t pay tithe.

“I don’t pay tithe. I would not give 10 percent and nobody can force me to give 10 percent of my money to anybody. So I don’t pay tithe. I do all sort of philanthropic jobs myself. I see where there is the need for me to help and I help.

“I don’t have to give it to somebody who then decides where to put the money. So it is my hard earned money and I should put it where I want to put it.”

“That’s me. I’m not saying payment of tithe is bad. I’m not here to say don’t pay tithe. No. I think it depends on what you see the church for and what the church means to you and does for you.”

“I don’t give a damn,” Amoabeng opined when asked how he will feel when he dies. “I don’t think about death at all.”

“Take it how you want if you want to take it”, Nenebi quoted 2Chainz when he was asked if whether his works should called poems or songs by host Sammy Flex on AM Pluzz (a morning show on Pluzz 89.9FM).

The host was questioning him on why he used poem and song interchangeably to describe his works. According to the poet and songwriter, his works has both spoken word delivery and singing so any labeling could fit them.

“I’m a poet, I do poetry but the work as to whether they are poems or songs, I will live it for the listeners to judge because I write musical choruses for other people to do on my recordings”, Nenebi further explained citing his works, Me, My Selfie and Eyes featuring Mzbel and Sandra Claus (Chlistmas in Kumasi), both of which were premiered on the show as examples.

George Quaye, host of The Pundit on GhOne TV called into the show to commend Nenebi, describing him as a “very talented young man” and asked him to define his artwork for his listeners to which he responded with, “I am a spoken word artist. I’m a poet, I call what I do ‘Afropop Poetry’ but I still maintain that I want the listeners to call it what they want to”.

Sally Frimpong-Manso, a panelist on the show called Nenebi’s unique style of combining poetry recital and singing as “refreshing and different”.

She wasn’t amused by his appearance and speech ability (he cleared that he had a stammering problem) but suggested he focused on reaching out to corporate brands.

Another panelist, Justice Oteng, a producer, said he was moved by Nenebi’s delivery but commended Mzbel’s singing saying, “I have never heard Mzbel exhibit such skills. I was blown away. I believe she has more talent under her sleeves”.

The other two panelists, Mr. Logic and DJ Willie Roy, were both full of praise for his unique style.

Nenebi released Me, My Selfie and Eyes featuring Mzbel last week as the second single from his debut album, See Me Naked.

Music Review: Ofori Amponsah’s Alewa is Yummy Vomit, and We Love It

$

GhanaGist.Com is excited to bring you another review this week. After a thorough review of Bisa KDei’s “Mansa” song, writer Gabriel Myers Hansen is back with another review about Pastor Ofori Amponsah’s come back song “Alewa” featuring rapper Sarkodie.

Enjoy below!!

Alewa is cheap local toffee which is too sweet and stains your tongue. It’s a treasured relic of Ghanaian childhood in the 90s, much like ‘poki’ or ‘asaanaa’….it is also the title of Ofori Amponsah’s comeback track. The song is exceptional, an instant classic, and we’re only now realising fully, how much we’ve missed him.

The lost angel is back knocking on Satan’s door, and he bears enticing gifts. There’s a lot of talk about drawing blood. It’s unsettling, what perfect  pair that is.

At least that is the sentiment of several people here. Why? Three years ago, Ofori Amponsah announced that he had had a change of heart and was leaving highlife, the sound of his relevance and what had gained him much affection from Ghanaians, to pursue gospel music. He left us with open jaws and a new jargon, ‘higher love’, for that, he had said, would be what his brand of gospel would be known and called. His new gospel album was going to be a demonstration. This album has yet to be released, but no yawa. He even started a church, the Family of Faith and Love Ministries at Ofankor.

READ ALSO: Bisa KDei’s “Mansa”, a case of musical disrespect

Indeed, it was not the first time this was happening even in Ghana and we both know  it will not be the last. K.K. Kabobo, Papa Shee and Lord Kenya have all made somewhat smooth transitions from secular music to church matters as a result of seeing the light.

But still, Mr ‘All 4 Real’ was leaving and it was shocking, but we are Ghanaians and so we would pull through…we always have. We have survived coup d’etats, ethnic conflict, successive underwhelming governments, corruption scandals, ‘dumsor’ and load shedding. There’s a difference, Dr. Kwabena Donkor, will have you know. He’s the power minister after all, we aren’t. ‘We can live with disappointment’, we had said, holding hands and patting one another’s back. ‘We’ve been tested so much, it’s not so bad anymore’.

Three years on, though, Ofori is back, and he might not be a pastor anymore. And like the father of the prodigal son in Luke 15, we have accepted him. We have bathed him and kissed him and put a ring on his finger. It was not easy for both of us, but we are forgiving in that way, and the song is the bomb, so…

He has been compared to the biblical dog returning to its vomit, but walaahi, this is delicious vomit…true alewa! Remember how, as children, we constantly took the Alewa from our mouths, turning it with just thumb and finger, and smiling because it was too nice? Remember how we sucked on it in so many different ways in relish? Ahaa!

The song itself begins gently. It sneaks up on you the way a woman wearing a transparent nightie over nothing but white lingerie would appear behind an unsuspecting lover.

This chocolate complexioned woman is always smiling; it’s one of the many things which makes her beautiful. But tonight, her smile is more than a smile. She knows what she’s doing, and she knows she’s got you exactly where you’re supposed to be. This is the song’s feel.

‘You be my queen of Sheba…, you dey make me shiver…, baby I love you’

Regular lyrics, cliché even. But have Ofori Amponsah sing it and it’s a totally different story. The voice is a musical instrument too, and Ofori’s voice is special; a playful tenor which, on this song, lends itself in a kind of falsetto. It’s teasing and tasty …almost like he’s swallowing on sweet saliva. His vocal delivery on this song is enjoyable, because he’s enjoying himself. You can tell that he’s ‘aware’ of the song and how it comes across; amorous and mildly saucy, because we can hear, in addition, that he’s smiling…the way he sustains the last word in this line in verse 1:

‘…da naa ɔtuu tuo naa, okum aboa’

Also, notice how the backing vocals are merely above a whisper in this line of the chorus, also prolonging meaningfully, the word ‘ love’ here:

‘… baby I love you’, and part of the bridge which introduces Sarkodie’s verse: ‘…ɔdɔ  ei, si dwom sa ɛ…’

Theres also a line where he compares this woman to food and soup. It’s not that that there’s anything wrong with that…only his inflection of the words. Ei Pastor that! Pastor Pastor!

Can he render this exact joyful and seductive sound live on stage? Will he succeed in wowing a live audience as it is the one true test of an artist’s capabilities to perform? Uhmm… I don’t want to talk about it.

Instrumentation on this song is a contrast to Ofori’s lyrical behaviour in the song –It’s hard-hitting and masculine. Kaywa, who has been responsible for the majority of the city’s highlife hits now, blurs the point of blend in these two situations, and again succeeds in ensuring suitability to  easy-flowing waist movement in local wax print, handkerchief in hand…or two fingers running down a sweaty torso. There’s special trombone sound in corners of the song. It hits a specific vein and tendon. When you’re dancing you’ll know.

Sarkodie is different: he’s random and powerful. He says things which raise the eyebrows and neck hair. Only he too, can come up with innuendos that are so technical, mischievous and funny, that radio can identify that something troubling has been said, but can do nothing about. Not many artists can manage this.

Pastor Ofori Amponsah

Pastor Ofori Amponsah

His performance on this song is energetic. His tone is energetic, and so is the texture of his rap lyrics. Another of his many strengths as a poet is the nature of his delivery; it’s quick and sharp, and he can stuff as many words as there possibly can be in brief moments that few can match. But it’s not the endless outpouring of words that he exhibits here. Perhaps that style is not completely appropriate for every situation, especially this one. His impetus is felt in his bars. In the intro to the song, he blurts his trademark interjection, ‘huh!’, just so you know what time it is, and delivers the following:

‘ kantam dinsie sɛ mentɔ w’odɔ mu da, awusu me abɔ mi pusa mapim/ wo nsa aka mi yi diɛ sikasɛm nyɛ  w’asɛm kɛse, mifri Akyem/ ma minfa ka wo, sɛ eebia w’abusua ampini koraa aa wa nyim/

It’s not all he says, but let’s pause for a second. That last line right there, which loosely translates as ‘let me touch you with it, so that in case your family entertains reservations, you’re already pregnant’, is what I mean by Sarkodie’s wit with words and suggestive language and how many times he’s found his way around radio.
He delivers a full verse in the middle of the song where he mainly discusses a beautiful girl and the methodology and politics of love, after which Ofori Amponsah returns with one more verse which feels like it was channelled from Songs of Solomon. It’s an apt collaboration.

The song can take constant replay, and in that way it’s brilliant. It’s something comparable only to Ofori’s own earlier works but it’s also distinct in the kind of classiness it comes in. And when it is the song which orders your body movement and not you, you know we have a song.

The Alewa man, or Pastor Alewa, if you like, has faced perpetual persecution in the wake of his return, or for it. Also, he has been accused of theft of the song…or title. I can’t quite unpack the conundrum yet. This is interesting, considering that Ofori Amponsah left an impressive catalogue of highlife models before being called by God. But he’s been away for three years and has opened the floodgates for misgivings  and an array of ‘isms’, mainly  scepticism  and cynicism.

But every time something great has been made, there has been a torrent of negative energy. But is it right, is it fair to Andy? Wouldn’t I want to find out the truth or otherwise of the story? Whatever happened to the danger of a single story, for which reason I don’t want to look at the other dimensions and theories regarding this song’s true owner? Uhmm…I don’t want to talk about it.

Be wise and stay away from drugs – Kwaw Kese to the youth

Barely a year after Hiplife artiste, Kwaw Kese, was arrested for smoking India Hemp in Kumasi, he made a return to the Baba Yara Stadium last Saturday for the Luv FM Schools Reunion a changed man and an anti-drug abuse advocate.

Almost every rendition of the crowd-puller on the day was laced with a message on the negative effects of illicit drug use as his fans jumped, stamped their feet and danced unending in a jammed-packed event which attracted both the old and the youth.

The slender artiste who was in an all-red jumpsuit with an inscription; ‘Jail Bird’, and a pair of brown combat boots to match was in his element as he literally pulled the fans along with him with each move.

Perhaps, what sent the fans into an ecstatic mood and a nostalgic memories of his arrest was his Massa I Beg song which narrated his ordeal in prison and eulogise the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mr Nathan Kofi Boakye.

The award-wining artiste intermittently paused to address the youth to shy away from drugs in order not to fall into the grips of the law.Kwaw Kese - GhanaGIst

“Remember no one is above the law. The law is no respecter of persons and you have to be wise”, Kwaw Kesse told the yelling fans.

But the performance moved to a different real when self-acclaimed Dancehall King, Shatta Wale, mounted the podium to perform.

Unfortunately, Shatta’s ‘vim’ and fire was extinguished a few minutes after mounting the stage when the lights went off.

Apparently shattered and disappointed, Shatta Wale never made a return to the stage even when power was restored within 10 minutes.

However, his reaction did not go down well with to patrons who described it as ‘childish’.

“What kind of arrogance is that? I thought he has changed”, a disappointed fan told the Graphic Showbiz.

Early on, several ‘underground’ artistes and dancers showcased their talents. They included Big Bone and Aban, Kofi Beat & Lil Nashi.

Cheating everywhere! Cheating accusations mar Zimbabwe’s ‘Mr Ugly’ contest

$

Pageant judges have crowned a new winner of Zimbabwe’s 4th annual “Mister Ugly” contest, upsetting supporters of the crowd favorite who called the winner too handsome and prompting rioting at the event.

Judges on Saturday chose 42-year-old Mison Sere, citing his numerous missing front teeth and a wide range of grotesque facial expressions, over William Masvinu, who had held the title since 2012.

Masvinu and his supporters mobbed the judges upon hearing their decision, claiming that Sere was “too handsome” to win and his ugliness wasn’t natural since it was based on missing teeth.

“I am naturally ugly. He is not. He is ugly only when he opens his mouth,” maintained Masvinu, gesturing at his rival.

“Do we have to lose our teeth to win? This is cheating,” shouted another contestant, Patrick Mupereki. While no one was injured, there was a great deal of pushing and shoving as the results were announced and insults were hurled at the judges.

Beauty pageants are popular in this southern African country and even though they are typically for women, scandal is not unusual. Earlier this year, Miss Zimbabwe winner Emily Kachote faced a backlash on social media, with Zimbabweans calling her ugly and undeserving of the crown.

She was later forced to step down when just two weeks into her reign, images surfaced of her posing nude — which incidentally also brought down her predecessor.

Sere dismissed the critics as just “sore losers” as he pocketed the $500 in winnings.

“They should just accept that I am uglier than them,” he said. “I hope to get a TV contract. I already moved around schools performing and showcasing my ugliness so this is a chance to make it on TV.”

The complaints of Masvinu and the other contestants may have a degree of validity. Organizers had previously announced that disabilities or enhancements would not be accepted in the competition which should focus on “natural ugliness.”

Pageant organizer David Machowa originally told the Associated Press that he began the contest to remove the stigma of ugliness. “Looks are God given. We should all be proud of who we are.”

The pageant involved three rounds of modelling, with individual and group struts down a catwalk of a Harare nightclub.

“Sere made tremendous effort to enhance his ugliness by pulling facial stunts,” said judge Abigail Mataranyika, a university student. “Masvinu thought he is so ugly that he didn’t need to try hard. That cost him the crown.”

This year’s competition attracted a record number of 36 entries, compared to just five in 2012 when Masvinu began his winning streak. The competition was suspended in 2014 due to a lack of sponsorship, but this year the owners of a string of Harare nightclubs donated $1,000.Zimbabwe's Mr Ugly 2015, Mison Sere

Justice! is an explosive Al Jazeera English documentary about Anas Aremeyaw Anas’s undercover crusade to rid Ghana of judicial corruption once and for all.
Over a period of two years, the award-winning investigative journalist secretly filmed 12 Ghanaian High Court judges, 22 other judges, and 140 court officials accepting bribes. While exposing their corruption, his actions also led to the release of alleged murderers and rapists.

As Kofi Annan, former UN secretary-general and one of Ghana’s most famous sons, says in the film, “Sometimes it takes a spark, just a spark, and I think Anas has provided that spark for the whole edifice to blow up.” Anas

Popular comedian Kwame Dzokoto won the Tarkwa Nsuaem Constituency Parliamentary Primary seat to represent the ruling the National Democratic Congress in 2016’s General Elections.

But Dr. Richard Amoako Baah, the former head of the political science department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has a message for the TV personality of ‘Edziban’ fame.

He spoke with an Accra based Class FM on Monday.

“Some of the winners are just a bit worrying you know…when you have someone like Dzokoto, I mean what did he campaign on, ‘edziban’ or something? I don’t understand it.”

“It becomes almost like a popularity contest because the candidates don’t actually debate each other for the voters to actually see what they are leaned towards….which is not good, and, so, in the end it becomes a popularity contest and Dzokoto is well-known, edziban, and I’m sure it has a lot to do with why he won.Kwame Seth Dzokoto

“I mean look, once you are a comedian, always a comedian. And you go to Parliament and people will see you from that perspective. You start saying something…important and they start laughing [at you] and it’s not a laughing matter in Parliament.

“I’m not saying ‘edziban’ will not do well…I want him to educate himself and go and do the work he has submitted himself to do, not to go over there and engage in jokes or something.”

Kwame Dzokoto pulled 1,450 votes to beat Thomas Okyere with 398 votes.

Contrary to widely held view that Theatre in Ghana was revived by him and his Roverman Productions, James Ebo Whyte, popularly known as Uncle Ebo Whyte has revealed in an exclusive interview that, Theatre didn’t die in Ghana.

“I know I have been credited for reviving Theatre [in Ghana] but from my perspectives, Theatre never quite died in Ghana”, he told GhanaGist TV, the official television channel for GhanaGist.com.

According to him, this is “because every church at least twice a year will have a Theatre production; Christmas, Easter. The standard may not be anything to write home about but at least they are doing it.”

“The School of Performing Arts never stopped putting up shows, so Theatre never quite died,” he said to debunk the notion that he revived Theatre in Ghana.

He said the only difference now between his Roverman Productions and what others are doing is the fact that, many people do Theatre as a hobby whiles he does commercial Theatre.

“What my platform [Roverman Productions] is… is commercial Theatre and that one you can’t even say that it’s been revived because it wasn’t dead before. A lot of the time … people in the Theatre always done it as a hobby and as a part time thing. I think this is the first time where there is a company, not just a Theatre … Drama troupe but a company registered with tax status and everything dedicated to live Theatre and that’s very difficult.”

In 2011, he was awarded by the UT Ghanaian Entrepreneur Foundation’s Entrepreneur award for Most Promising Entrepreneur. In 2015, Ebo Whyte says he is not yet a successful entrepreneur.

“Not yet. Anybody who proclaims himself a success is dead. As long as you are alive, your best achievement must always be ahead of you. Any time your best achievement is behind you, you stop learning. So that’s the challenge I give myself that my best play is always my next one. My best production is always my next one. My best achievement is always my next challenge and that’s what keeps me going,” he told GhanaGist.Com.

His Roverman Productions is ready to outdoor its latest play titled “Puppeteers” at the National Theatre.

“Puppeteers is about power and the kind of negative people [things] power attracts. In life whenever you get any position; your position attracts people, people who don’t subscribe to your values, they don’t subscribe to your principles but your new position attracts them.”

“The challenge for the person who occupies the new position is how to keep his integrity and stop this people from taking advantage of his integrity and his position to pursue to their own selfish and sometimes their nefarious activities.”

When asked what’s the guarantee that’s, “Puppeteers” will be different from his previous productions, he said the guarantee is his word.

“My word that and my commitment that I will always rise the bar with every show and we are kicking that commitment.”

“Puppeteers” is showing at the National Theatre on 28th and 29th November and 5th and 6th December 2015. Two shows each day at 4pm and 8pm.
