As a lead brand in digital innovation, Tigo Ghana has rolled out yet another digital channel of communication for its customers, called AskTigo Skype Care.

The Skype Care channel aims at providing customer service support to customers who prefer to communicate over Skype video calls and online chat.  The introduction of this new service, adds up to Tigo’s number of digital communication channels that have been rolled out this year.

In a statement delivered by the Director for Customer Operations, Stephen Essien, he said,
“Three years ago, we were the first telecom company in Ghana to launch our Self-Care mobile app and so we are very excited to be the first in opening up additional channels to engage with our customers. We want to be where our customers are to make it easy for them to interact with our brand.”

“The key advantage with Skype Care is it allows our customer care personnels to visually demonstrate help through the video call. With our reputation for friendliness, our customers will be delighted to talk to us on Skype”, he added.

Customers will be required to activate their video view before a Tigo Customer Service personnel turns on their video view in order to avoid fraudulent situations and unnecessary pranks.

To get started, customers can simply download Skype from the Google Play Store, iTunes, Windows Store, or BlackBerry World, if they do not already have the app. Customers will then need to add ‘AskTigo Gh’ as a contact. The Customer Service team will receive a notification and accept the customer’s request.

Tigo’s Skype Care service is available every Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm.

The premier mobile telephony network, Tigo Ghana is indeed leading the industry with their unsurpassed customer service experience and digital innovation.

21 November, 2015 is expected to be a memorable day for fashion brands, personalities, enthusiasts and the fashion industry as a whole when the Ghana Fashion Awards make a grand return to the national capital, Accra.

The World Trade Centre in Accra will be the host of almost all the people who matter in the Ghanaian fashion industry, as both old and emerging players in the fashion industry are recognised and celebrated.

After two years of inactivity, the Ghana Fashion Awards has been given a new lease of life by the new organizers, e.TV Ghana, who have rejuvenated the awards ceremony to make it more attractive and relevant to suit current trends in Ghana and the international scene.

According to JOT Agyeman, the General Manager for e.TV Ghana “The 2015 e.TV Ghana Fashion Awards was created to continue the tradition of recognising and appreciating individuals and organizations who are working tirelessly to promote fashion in Ghana and internationally.

It is also an opportunity to exhibit indigenous Ghanaian tradition through fashion, where creativity and the unique style of designers are showcased to create an amazing experience for an industry worth celebrating.”

The nominees were selected based on their contribution to the fashion industry both locally and internationally. The nominations also reflect those who in 2014 and 2015 challenged the status quo, created brands that transcended barriers and borders, contributed to employing young Ghanaians and have business models worth emulating.

The nominees’ contribution to creative design, their dynamics of fashion production and new thinking were also taken into consideration before they were selected. Those who have taken firm decisions to create, manage and implement fashion brands in challenging circumstances and have contributed greatly to the industry were highly identified for recognition.

All these factors were considered in order to ensure a credible awards scheme for all stakeholders to be satisfied.

The 2015 awards ceremony promises to be a night of spectacle, glamour and excitement as it is expected to be the beginning of a fashion reawakening among designers, organizations and policy makers in the industry.

The event will also be giving exposure to emerging designers and unearthing new talents in the fashion business. As a result, guests will be thrilled with runway shows provided by Joyce Ababio College of Creative Design and Bluecrest College School of Fashion.

This will offer designers an opportunity to see the new generation of fashion designers and models in Ghana. Not only that, the night will witness the first ever white carpet experience at any Ghana Fashion Awards Ceremony.

Categories to be awarded at this year’s event include ‘the Fashion Brand Design of the Year’, ‘Emerging Fashion Design Brand of the Year’, ‘Model of the Year’, ‘Celebrity Fashion Icon of the year’, ‘Contribution to Fashion Education’, ‘Contribution to Fashion Photography’, ‘Fashion Retailer of the Year’, ‘Fashion Accessories Brand of the Year’ and ‘Contribution to Fashion Promotion and Marketing’.

Is Gyedu Blay Ambolley jealous of Obour’s achievements?

$

0

Dear Highlife legend, I respectfully decided to write this letter because of some of the things you said before and after the elections. It is unfortunate I could not come out until now.

The first reason for writing to you is to publicly ask you if you are jealous of the achievements of Bice Osei Kuffour aka Obour and his administration of the affairs of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA).

The second reason is to let you know some of the groundbreaking achievements of Obour under his AJUMAPA vision since you claim it is all about “talk talk” and no action.

READ ALSO: PHOTOS: Kasapreko Company Limited celebrates MUSIGA’s successful Elections

Elections is about winning and losing and after every contest, losers show good sportsmanship by congratulating the winners and then forge ahead.

After the elections in which you lost massively, you didn’t show good sportsmanship by congratulating the winner, instead you gave the impression that, the elections were not free and fair.

Appietus who also contested the same position said the process was free and fair; does that mean he was forced to say that? Didn’t he also want to take Obour’s position just as you wanted? What kind of picture are you trying to paint?

Now to celebrate the successful elections, last Thursday, Kasapreko Company Limited, producers of homegrown alcoholic beverages hosted a cocktail reception at the Oak Plaza Hotel to celebrate the Union.

Gyedu Blay Ambolley

Gyedu Blay Ambolley

The fun event was attended by some of the new executives and some members of MUSIGA.

It was a surprise for me to see Appietus popularly known as Appietus who also contested for the MUSIGA Presidency present at the event.

I thought you would show up but you were conspicuously missing and looking at your status in the music industry, it was disappointing that you didn’t show up at the event especially when you took part and contested a key position in the elections.

Perhaps you were not invited due to your constant attacks on the person of Obour, his executives and the Union in general or you were invited and yet you decided not to show up.

If my understanding of issues is not poor then maybe, I will be confused if I think that people appreciate your criticism of Obour who has done a lot for the Union you want to lead.

Prior to the MUSIGA elections last month, you had said through various media outlets that the Obour-led administration has done virtually nothing to elevate the musicians from their current status to a status that you are yet to prescribe.

Obour

Obour

According to you, Obour, his executives and the Union have resorted to only talking and doing nothing. “In life, you have to walk your talk but for me I know the current MUSIGA administration is all about the talk. All they are doing is just creating the impression that, yeah, they are doing something,” you told NewsOne prior to the elections.

Below are some of the landmark achievements of the Obour led administration at the MUSIGA under his AJUMAPA vision.

 Effective rebranding of MUSIGA

Prior to Obour becoming the president of the Union, not many musicians knew and were aware of its activities.

But now, it has become more attractive to industry players and other stakeholders.

This has been achieved through effective PR and marketing initiatives.

 Membership

With the branding, the Union attracted different eyeballs meaning the membership increased which forced Obour and his executives to look at categorisation to accompany benefits; including legal advice, facilitating in musical works registration and royalty collection, discounted services e.g. health insurance, group life insurance etc.)

Re-registration of over 1,000 members, establishment of new membership database and increase in membership by 200 percent.

 AMWEF Fund

The Obour administration chalked a lot of successes with many projects, one was the establishment of the Ageing Musicians Welfare Fund and yearly distribution of support to members and holding of medical screening exercise for beneficiaries.

So far, over 200 musicians have benefitted from the AMWEF Fund.

 GHAMRO

Effective Collective Rights Management (GHAMRO) – the Union led the revolution to achieving an effective administration for Ghamro in line with accepted standard international practices.

 MUSIGA Academy

There is more to music than just singing and playing an instrument. Most musicians lack the professional training and skills.

The Union Collaborated with School of Performing Arts (S.P.A) and National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) to provide professional training and skills for players in the music industry.

Survey on Music Industry in Ghana

Comprehensive Survey on Music Industry in Ghana to identify the economic contribution of the sector to GDP and also to advise policy direction and public and private investment in the music sector.

Owing to the fact that, there have been several regimes before Obour, this is worth celebrating.

Government subvention of  GH ¢2 Million

The Union for the first time was able to access government funding through a budgetary allocation for research, music fair & peace campaign, capacity building and project administration.

 Midland- MUSIGA AJUMAPA Business Loans

The marriage between Midland Savings & Loans saw the establishment of the Midland- MUSIGA AJUMAPA Business Loans, a low interest and relatively collateral free loan to enable MUSIGA members access funds for their projects.

 Ghana Music Week Festival

Institutionalisation of Ghana Music Week Festival, MUSIGA Grand Ball and Asanteman Arts Ball and Awards as event brands to raise funds for Union projects and to promote and create jobs for members.

Agreement with Charterhouse on Ghana Music Awards

Formalisation of Ghana Music Awards arrangement with Charterhouse and Provision of car prize for chosen VGMA winners over last three years.

For the first time, a formal agreement was signed between Charterhouse and MUSIGA on the organisation of the Ghana Music Awards scheme.

The Obour led administration has done a lot that lack of space will not allow me to put out. To say they have not done anything and only “talk talk” is being disingenuous.

Per the voting pattern, you  appear  as the next in line for the presidency but from the way you are going, it will be difficult for you should you want to contest again in 2019.

You have given the impression that, you love the Union more than any other person but your utterances prove the opposite.

Can we ever have uncle Ambolley work with Obour if he claims, Obour is only doing “talk talk”? If not, then can we have Uncle Ambolley desist from all these attacks?

Judgment day for Reggae musician Ekow Micah on November 30

A Circuit Court in Accra has fixed November 30, to determine the fate of ace Musician Ekow Micah who is being held over 127 grammes of cannabis sativa.

The cannabis was allegedly found concealed in Micah’s “back pack”.

The date for judgment was fixed after Micah had testified and produced his witness. In the case of prosecution it called three witnesses to make their case.

The court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh told parties to file their addresses if any by November 27, adding, it would not entertain any delay whatsoever.

Mounting the witness box earlier, Ms Lily Okyere, a defence witness told the court that she had never seen Micah with any dried leaves in the house before.

Answering questions under cross-examination by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Moses Atibillah, witness said she spends eight hours with her brother in the house every day.

According to the witness, Micah her brother goes to the Studio to record songs and return to the house to play those songs.

Ms Okyere contended that on the day of the incident, she swept the corridor in the morning but found nothing on the corridor.

Defence witness said she could not tell the owner of the dried leaves concealed in the black polythene bag which was found by one of the police officers.

Ms Okyere said she could also not identify the fair complexion gentleman who came to look for her brother on the day of the incident.

Witness said she could also not tell whether or not the gentleman who came to look for her brother was “responsible for the content of the black polythene”.

Led in evidence by defence counsel, Mr Andrew KudzoVortia, defence witness, said on August 5, 2015 between 1000 hours and 1500 hours, she was in the house when a man, fair in complexion came to look for her brother.

According to Ms Okyere, the said gentleman demanded water, which was not available in the house.

Witness contended that after offering him a seat in the corridor, the gentleman gave her GH 20 pesewas to purchase a sachet of water outside.

“When I returned the gentleman was no longer sitting in the corridor rather he was standing in front of the main gate of the house.

“He told me that he was no longer going to wait for Micah so he left,” she added.

Witness said she did not hear about her brother’s arrest until Micah came with three police officers to the house.

“When the police officer arrived in the house one of them walked straight to the corridor and told us that this is what he has found.

“My lord another one escorted me into our room and brought some CD’s and a pen dive, after which they left,” she said.

Micah has denied the charge of possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority, and he is currently on remand.

Narrating the facts of the case earlier, ACP Moses Atibillah said Micah is a resident of Ogbojo, near Kokrobite in Accra.

He said, on August 4, Micah was arrested by the Airport Police over an alleged extortion case currently under investigation.

ACP Atibillah said the following day, at about 1130 hours, the police and the accused person visited Micah’s house to conduct a search and in the process, a quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp was found concealed in Micah’s “back pack”.

Bisa KDei’s “Mansa”, a case of musical disrespect

Mansa is beautiful, in the way that it was produced –it’s happy, pounding and familiar. It’s both fresh and classic in the many experienced sleights Kaywa flays as sound engineer as usual; utilising magically the konga, trumpets and guitars, which are pillars of highlife music anyway.

I should also make special mention of lavish piano work, especially when Bisa requests an interlude from Kaywa toward the middle of the song. Highly spiritual.

The song is accessible and useful in the way that it makes you nod your head and want to dance; you can play it in a club or at a street carnival, you can play it at a naming ceremony at Madina, and at the same time it’s perfect for the late afternoon party on the Sunday after returning from a funeral thanksgiving service. It’s right for the gym and for pump on a dull Monday morning.

But by making Mansa too, Bisa KDEI has been disrespectful to one of the very foundations of the Ghanaian’s happiness –highlife (the other being quarrelling with trotro conductors), which is what many of today’s musicians have been accused and crucified for endlessly.

Beautiful melody makes good music, but lyrics make for better music too, and in many ways, achieve class and perfect roundness. Highlife music is seen as the last resort for substance in lyrics, even above Gospel ( well except Yaw Sarpong and the Asomafo, or SDA hymns…or maybe Shasha Marley’s ‘Martha Tui’, if you get what I mean), and so perhaps, if Bisa’s inconsistency in his message was in Azonto, we might forgive him…but this is highlife, the language of proverbs and the thoughts of the Ghanaian octogenarian, and so it’s disrespectful and requires thirty cows and the blood of teenage virgin girls to pacify.

Bisa begins the Mansa narrative by bidding farewell to Yaa Mansa, supposedly a lover or close friend , saying that he was returning to the town of his birth for three days…that if the grass was greener and there were wider smiles on that side of the fence, his return was in doubt.

Nice message! After all, like Amakye Dede advices; you should change environment if things change, because there’s no point being clad with disgrace at one place. But in the lyrics that follow immediately, our desperate and broken narrator is someone else; there’s talk about joyful dancing, and love at first sight, and knickers…even an invitation to Amerley, a Ga damsel, to join in the fun. Where is the continuity? Where is the plot? It’s unfair and disrespectful, and even if it is condoned in other genres, this is highlife.

But the song is a hit, and Bisa has gotten away with his lack of candour and flow in his lyrics…but then again, this is a town of ‘substance-less’ hits, from much of Ambolley’s rap to ‘Ye Wo Krom’. Something bad is happening.

Another question for Mansa is this: though it’s highlife, it was not recorded live. Might it have affected the final product? Should highlife or indeed all other Ghanaian music be recorded and performed live?

Have our artist been too hasty and too lazy? Have they played smart with us for more than two decades? But then again, can Kwaw Kesse’s ‘Nonsense’ be rendered live? What about Sarkodie’s ‘Illuminati’? Will it be the same? Years before Sarkodie’s Mary album, Okyeame Kwame released the Versatile album, also live and also beautiful, but how come it didn’t win him Artist of the Year, or a MOBO, or a BET if we required live sound so badly?

Will Sarkodie’s Mary live up to the bars that Rappaholic has set, for example? What does it matter if the song has been done and the youth is dancing? Should it matter?

The snare which introduces the song, and indeed runs for the entire three minutes and fifteen seconds of the number, feels plastic and inauthentic, which  is the argument of Mark Okraku Mante, Bessa Simons, Ambolley, as well as other live band ‘vigilantes’.Bisa Kdei BreakThrough Album 3

When Bisa demands applause in the song, it’s not clapping we hear. What Kaywa improvises with, is inadequate. Perhaps if actual live sounds were used, it would be something more than to be merely danced to –perhaps real atmosphere would have been achieved, and in the words of Bessa Simons, ‘you hear something new every time’.

Contemporary music producers have come under endless criticism because they don’t use live instruments during recording…many modern disc jockeys too, because they don’t use turn tables.  But in their defence, the dynamics of song making have changed. Technology has made things easier. We don’t walk as much as we used to, because of taxis. We don’t stuff letters into bottles and hope our lovers receive them on the other side of the ocean. We don’t even write letters anymore. The post office will soon become a museum, if it isn’t already, because we have the internet and smart phones, and we don’t feel guilty about it.

Of course our music too was always going to be affected. Technology is like the phenomenon of plastic…it’s inevitable. Indeed there are songs which have been ‘artificially’ made and still accurately capture the same emotional climate of highlife music. Take Sarkodie’s ‘Adonai’, take Obrafuor’s ‘Ghetto Love’, both of which are highlife at the very base…

Maybe what modern producers require is practice, intuition and the most important instrument of all; a detail oriented ear.

The process of creating music is spontaneous and accidental, and so though it’s perfect to make music in company where there’s creativity from various people, it’s also possible to make music, great music, in solitude. And there, Fruity Loops might come in handy…might help capture that creativity in the bottle which is the artist’s mind.

Bisa started off in the group Boys in Serious Action, which is what BISA stands for, and then began scoring music for Kumawood…mostly sad and lonely songs, or about God’s time, you know, save for the Azonto Ghost exceptions. We’ve always been drawn to the morose too, for some odd reason. Remember Blind Messiahs and Ama Boahemaa?

Still, he has an enviable work ethic. In an age where artists prefer singles to a full body of work and people are growing a curious allergy to highlife, Bisa is already on his sophomore project. Apart from singing, he also does all backing vocals and produces music, so today, he’s easily one of Ghana’s most sought after musicians and widely regarded as the future of the genre; touring with the big names and receiving the blessings of revered veterans, never mind that on many occasions, I feel he could sing a higher key; really challenge his vocal capacities to get optimum performance, or do better on stage, he’s still a hard worker.

A man’s gift maketh room for him, but hard work is more important than talent. Fancy, Rex omar, who needs no introduction in Ghana and abroad in the genre, praising Bisa and prophesying greatness into Bisa’s career on social media …that’s like being chosen out of the called. I hope, in all honesty and for all our sakes though, that it is for his work ethic and dedication to the genre, and not necessarily for Mansa.

He’s most likely going to receive any award this land has to offer in the year under review, when it comes to highlife. Competition from R2bees’ Concert Party and Makoma, as well as Pastor Ofori ‘Alewa’ Amponsah…and indeed, Kwabena Kwabena, might just not be enough competition.

But we deserve improved lyrics. If D-Black and Omar Sterling have had to prove their lyrical depth and dexterity in the past months, even after so much success, we should demand that from Bisa too, and indeed all our musicians, for after hearing and dancing, we should have something to listen to any think to, too.

Chief Executive Officer of the Tiger Eye PI and fearsome Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas was on personality profile show Starr Chat on Starr 103.5FM and revealed all about himself to host Bola Ray.

Below are some of the things he told Bola Ray on the show.

“I nearly died when I was doing the undercover work at the psychiatric hospital but I pressed the red button and my backup team came in to help. I remember after I had taken in all the cocaine and other stuff into my system as part of the work, I noticed my thing (manhood) wasn’t working. I called in doctors and they assured me that it will be back after a week but still, after a week nothing was happening and I was hot.

“Fortunately, they brought me some drugs from the UK and within two weeks, it was back on.”

“I won’t die for music but my pieces of reggae would carry me on… comfortably I can do Gramps Morgan.”

“Interestingly they used to call me invisible, I don’t know how that name came up but that is what they called me… I would swim on a normal day and if I have the time I would like to play the cards and also read investigative novels.”

“Interestingly, they used to call me invisible in school and I don’t know how that came about, but that is how they called me.”

“I love my school and I’m proud of it,” the award-winning international journalist spewed.

“I get uncles calling and they get worried, they think you should slow down a bit, but they come in almost very late all the time and I tell them; the work is out there already, there is nothing I can do about it,” he stated.

Stop complaining and add value to yourselves – Don Simon tells Gospel musicians

Over the years, many Ghanaian Gospel musicians have fought their producers for what they describe as cheating or taking undue advantage of them and their hard work but Bless Me hit maker, Don Simon seems to have an antidote to the menace.

Born Osei Simon, the musician who recently burst unto the music scene with his debut album Bless Me under Skyview Entertainment said a lot of Ghanaian Gospel musicians are lazy and do not add value to themselves hence being taken for granted and cheated.

According the certified Chartered Accountant cum musician, it is imminent Ghanaian Gospel musicians add values to themselves by investing into their education and creating other streams of income than relying solely on revenues from performances and album sales since trends have totally changed.

“A lot of musicians tend to fight their producers especially when they hear their songs doing well in places but the truth is a song’s popularity may not necessarily reflect in album sales,” he said.

Citing Sonnie Badu, Diana Hamilton, Jael Wiafe, DSP Kofi Sarpong and many others, the Bless Me singer said all these artists have other streams of income and continue to build reputable brands which are well respected hence the respect they command.

“On several occasions, I have heard colleagues cry and complain of how pastors unfairly treat them after performing in their churches and listening to their stories, I wonder if such things can happen to Sonnie Badu, Jael Wiafe, Diana Hamilton and a few others. The difference between these artists is that the latter have branded themselves well and command some respect therefore requesting for their services at events come at high costs.”

Unlike hiplife musicians who have managers and are always looking at building reputable brands, Don Simon asserts some Gospel musicians feel they need to look ordinary.

He has therefore advised colleague musicians to better position themselves by learning the business they ply, invest the little the money they make and look at other streams of income than the regular traditional means.

Don Simon also called on Gospel music producers to better position their artists and seek for the best interests of both parties to avoid the regular news of abuse and cheating.
