Okyeame Kwame Blog: Walking Conflict – Earl Ankrah Throws-In

$

earlLast week I opened to the world about my ‘Walking Conflict’ and Earl Ankrah called me at 11:49pm last Friday and poured out his ‘conflicts’ too; so I asked him to type it out in its raw state so that my dear readers can also enjoy.

Please read…

OK; you are on point. It’s a miracle that we manage to walk @ all; let alone in conflict. Look, I am a proud Ga, but I speak English with my beloved begotten son, Dyllan.  Somehow, I’m replacing his mother tongue with English. Reason?

The schools he will attend instruct in English. And as he rises in education, all his lectures and notes will be in English. So naturally, the stronger his grasp of the language from the onset, the better his prospects of excelling all the way through.

Not my doing. That’s the nature of the society I came to meet. In this regard, I am somewhat not 100% with the GES decision that Ghanaian children should be instructed in local languages at the primary levels. One of my main concerns here is, what if Dyllan is only fluent in Ga, but his teachers’ “korle eyaa nshor min”[cannot speak Ga]?

READ ALSO: [Okyeame Kwame to blog on Ghanaweb! http://ghanagist.com/okyeame-kwame-to-blog-on-ghanaweb/#.UdguITs3uKI]

Besides, our local languages, for some unfortunate historical reasons, are intellect-anaemic. And that’s perpetuated by the fact that local language broadcasts on any network have been caged into mediocrity: agrarian and illiterate. On radio, the discourse stomps around a free-for-all political shout-fest, formalized gossips and the liberty to libel. On screen: witchcraft- infested movies, guaranteed scenes of stinking poverty; plus, oh yes!-more shout-fests!

The reason I won’t allow Okanta [Dyllan] to watch SNLV rated movies, is the same reason why I won’t allow him to watch such local movies. I’ve got my own rating scheme. Rated P, I or M… [Scenes of Poverty, Illiteracy or Mediocrity]. Not under my roof!

Left unmanaged, our entire socio-cultural environment is toxic. Inappropriate for any kid worth a future, to grow up in. A tangible near-future where the Ghana-raised child can sit elbow-to-elbow with a Chinese, Taiwanese, Swedish or Australian kid to decipher stuff on equal levels; and where [s]he is not at the receiving end…or exchanging raw exports for next to nothing that bears tangible fruits. Tell me the last time you heard any local language program critically discussing: computer hardware or software, space travel, the big bang theory, Nano technology, the age of dinosaurs, world trade, software writing, etc.

The bastardization of our ‘local’ languages is so scary that if Dyl one day brings a girlfriend home, who he says cannot speak a word in English, but speaks a local language fluently, we will surely question her level of education [if she’s had one at all], her intellect, upbringing, social status…we might even wonder if she’s ever seen a water closet.

Even if she speaks some English, but gets the grammar all disjointed, it still wouldn’t make a difference. We will ponder why after all we’ve invested into Dyl; he should end up with someone like that. But then, if she suddenly bursts into fluent French, German or Spanish, we will all go gaga on her. WHY?  Again, that ain’t my doing. ‘I came to meet it’.

Fact is, the local language is not to blame. It’s the culture. There must be something wrong with our culture! A language is just a conduit of all that its mother culture entails. He that masters a language owns its culture.

Argue all you want, but if your kid masters a local language now, [s]he will be confined within the cultural boundaries of that language, along with all its attendant gains and limitations.

TO BE CONTINUED…

BBA UPDATE: Pokello’s ride or die love for Elikem

“I have his back just like he has mine. I ride and die for him like he does for me,” those were the potent words that Pokello used to sum up her relationship with Elikem today.

The Zimbabwean made this statement in front of her man and all of their fellow Housemates this afternoon as the Chasemates were all gathered outside enjoying their always entertaining Natasha Picnic Show.

“This guy Elikem what are his plans for you,” Angelo wanted to know. The sassy boutique owner was adamant that the few weeks that the Housemates have in the House is a short time for her man to hold off on any plans that he has for their union until The Chase is over.

What do you think; do Elikem and Pokello seem to have a ride or die kind of love?

BBA UPDATE: Elikem’s pimple popping fetish

Seriously; what is with Elikem and having women popping his pimples?

Is this a fetish? Is it some kind of kinky foreplay that we don’t know about? Or is it a bonding experience? Whatever it is; dude seems to really like it. At first it looked Fatima was the one obsessed with this grooming habit as she always at it whenever the two had a moment together but this morning when Elikem recruited his lady love Pokello to do it too it became apparent that this is in fact an Elikem thing.

But unlike Fatima who just digs in with her hands (euww); being the lady that she is, Pokello chose to use a safety pin to do her man’s dirty work. Uhmm, okay then. Well if this is something that helps them bond together then more power to them.

But what do you think of Elikem having his women popping his pimples? Is it sweet or disgusting?

BBA UPDATE: Pokello and Elikem’s ride or die kind of relationship

Saturday afternoon has come to mean one thing in the Big Brother House, the Housemates’ infamous picnic shows.

In the Ruby House The spotlight lovingNatasha did what she does best and turned the House into her own talk show. Today’s Fatty Nat Picnic Show did not disappoint when it comes to confessions from the Housemates.

Pokello told the Rubies that she and Elikem have a ride or die kind of relationship. Meanwhile Elikem once again admitted that he is addicted to Pokello. “Pokello brightens up the place like the African sun,” he said blushing. Aww, that’s so sweet. He also admitted that Fatima is that friend that is in a relationship that is not there. Ouch!

Meanwhile during her in house interview Fatima played dumb when Natasha asked her about a statement that she made in the past about Elikem being the type of man that has the qualities that she likes in a man.

Speaking of unrequited love, Angelo did not hold his tongue when explaining why he never could be with Annabel. “Annabel is like a blonde. She is too slow for me,” he said. Ouch!

In the Diamond House Annabel admitted that her crush on Angelo has fizzled. “When he left my feelings left with him,” the Kenyan told her fellow Housemates.

The Diamonds had their own Picnic Show hosted by the enigmatic Bassey. During her interview Beverly; who has been a lot of time with Bimp; admitted that she is unstable when it comes to men. “I may be romantically attached to Nando today but tomorrow I can be like f*** this,” said the sexy Nigerian.

Did you enjoy the Housemates picnic shows today?

BBA UPDATE: Elikem and Pokello argue again

Having gone through the Natasha inquisition on The Natty Nat Show,Pokello revealed that she had missed being with Elikem while she was in the Diamond House and thank goodness she made it back even though it wasn’t entirely for the Ghanaian hunk.

Minutes before their date in the Rendezvous Room, Elikem had to beg Pokello to talk about what’s happening between the two of them, to which the Zimbabwean diva had said they can discuss everything when they get there. She was really giving Elikem a hard time and this was clearly frustrating the young lad.

When they finally got talking, going around in circles and not saying anything in particular, Pokello stuck to the fact that she is not free talking about their issues in the House and would much rather wait for the Rendezvous Room where she will be able to detail all her qualms to Elikem so he can understand that he had done wrong to her while she was away. As much as Elikem wanted to clear the air, he was fighting a losing battle because this Zimbabwean diva was not interested in pursuing an argument the other Housemates would be eavesdropping on. So we wait for the Rendezvous Room.

Selly can’t seem to shake off the Nando rumours.

According to some of the Chasemates,Nando and Selly could have done more than just locked lips. This was revealed by Angelo who was curious about the state of affairs between the two.

Selly however, was quick to shut him down, brushing aside any talk of any hanky panky. “Nothing is going on between me and Nando. Yes, we kissed but that’s it. I liked Nando but it didn’t work out, so I have moved on. We did nothing more. I would be so mad if he’s telling people we did more. They love spreading rumours in that House”, she said, referring to some of the Housemates in the Diamond House.

Selly seems to have come out of her shell now that she is back in the Ruby House. The sexy Ghanaian had withdrawn into her shell after Nando started giving her the cold shoulder when she was still in the Diamond House with him.

This morning, Selly was laughing and joking like old times with her fellow Ruby Chasemates.

Malawi’s Fatima has become the latest Housemate to be Evicted from The Chase.

The Malawian had a stern look on her face as she made her exit from the House. “No drama, no drama. It’s not about you, chill out ” she called out to her emotional country-mate Natasha as she walked away.

After managing to make it to the halfway mark without ever being on the Eviction Nominations list Fatima’s luck ran out this evening.

This week was the first time that the young TV presenter had been put on the Eviction chopping block. During the Nominations on Monday she managed to get the highest Nominations in the Ruby House because her fellow Housemates had enough of her ever changing moods.

During her stay in the Big Brother House Fatima has grown very close to Ghana’s Elikem. Their intimate friendship even lead to the Ghanaian fellow breaking up with his lady love Pokello.

Now that Fatima has been eliminated from The Chase; what will become of Pokello and Elikem? Will the Ruby lovers finally peace in their relationship?

VIDEO: Hakeem’s emotional goodbye

Tonight Africa has bid farewell to Zimbabwe’s Hakeem.

Tears and screams echoed in both Houses as the Zimbabwean made an emotional exit from the Big Brother House.

Just a few moments after the hunky model learned that he had been put up for Eviction by HoH Melvin; he then learned that he is the latest Housemate to be Evicted from The Chase.

Melvin was inconsolable and couldn’t believe that Africa hadn’t saved the Zimbabwean. “Forgive me father,” he kept muttering. But Hakeem tenderly hugged his Nigerian buddy and the rest of the Diamonds before he kissed his girl Cleo goodbye and then joined IK and Fatima on stage.

Over the past few weeks the Diamond dude has found himself becoming a regular on the Nominations list and he managed to scrape through by the skin of his teeth over and over again.

This week had looked to be the Zimbabwean’s lucky week. He managed to win himself the Head of House chieftainship on Friday. This week was a 7th heaven for him as he got to play the role of a loving husband to his real life lover Cleo as part of the Wedding Task. At the Task Presentation on Thursday the two had an emotionally charged Wedding ceremony that saw the Diamond fellow bring his woman to tears with a sweet serenade. But tonight his luck finally ran out.

With Hakeem out of the The Chase what will become of his lady love Cleo? And who will be the new HoH in the Diamond House?

A sad goodbye

I don’t know the sudden craze for Condom Production among Hiplife artistes. First it was Trigmatic. Tema based music duo R2Bees also announced their readiness to start Condom Production. Now it’s the turn of the Grand Papa himself to venture into that field.

Originator of Hiplife, Reggie Rockstone appears jaded in the game he introduced in Ghana several years ago. However he is keeping himself relevant with his two chilling joints; Rockstone’s Office and Grand Papazz.

The rapper has introduced his own brand of condoms ‘Rockstone’. Anytime you happen to visit any of his joints, please ask of the ‘Rockstone’ condoms.

Amanda Jissih speaks about the ‘GREATEST FALL’ at the Ghana Meets Naija

Actress and Broadcaster Amanda Jissih has spoken for the first time about her recent fall at this year’s Ghana meets Naija Concert. She fell heavily on her backside while attempting to lift up Rap Dacta” Okyeame Kwame after the two performed his Single hit song “Faithful”.

As part of the City People Entertainment Awards awareness, the organizers of this annual event, City People Media Group, organized a Nominees’ party at the Exel Lounge on Friday July 6, in Accra.

The program which was strictly by invitation was honored quite well with the most patronized being upcoming actors and actresses.

In a Joy News interview with Amanda on the red carpet of the Nominees Party, she narrates what happened and says every bit of their performance was planned and rehearsed, except the fall.

“we rehearsed almost everything, just the ending that didn’t go well but Okyeame Kwame and I are good”, she said.

“I didn’t get hurt, I am a very strong woman…I will be very honest with you, I think it’s good it happened because we had a lot of artistes on stage…and no one seems to be talking about any of these artistes except myself and Okyeame Kwame…”

This fall has been described by many as “the greatest fall ever’’ in Ghanaian Showbiz, compared to the likes of Beyoncé who’s fall on stage was described as “the classic fall’’.

Many entertainment critics have poked fun at the two, but according to Amanda, it’s all entertainment and people just want to have a laugh

“…it’s good news, everyone seems to be talking about me and I have personally seen some funny pictures with writings on them but it’s entertainment, you cannot take it personal…we are all having a laugh…I broke Humpty Dumpty’s Record”, she chuckles.

According to Amanda, she’s okay and Okyeame Kwame as well and she’s very happy they were able to entertain the crowd.

“For me, the most important thing is that she didn’t get hurt because Amanda falling in heels carrying Okyeame Kwame? NOT NOT NOT”, she said jokingly.

FIFA U20 World Cup Turkey 2013: Ghana beats Chile 4-3 in extra time

A dramatic 121st-minute goal from Ebenezer Assifuah has taken Ghana through to the semi-finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup with a thrilling 4-3 win over Chile at Istanbul’s Ali Sami Yen Arena. The Black Satellites hero’s strike, his second of the match, completed a remarkable comeback in extra time and set up a last-four date with France on Wednesday.

This was a match that always promised goals and it did not take long for it to live up to expectations, with Ghana taking the lead inside 11 minutes. They did so with a strike that is sure to feature in the goal of the tournament, with 16-year-old Moses Odjer the player responsible. Controlling Frank Acheampong’s chipped cross on his chest, Odjer stepped forward on to the dropping ball, waited for it to reach the perfect height and smashed a beautifully struck right-foot volley into the top corner from 15 yards.

Ghana were good value for their lead at this stage but Chile always looked threatening on the break and midway through the first half they levelled matters with an equally spectacular goal. Christian Bravo was its architect, stealing possession in midfield and playing in Nicolas Castillo at the angle of the box. The in-form striker still had plenty to do but he continued his goal-a-game record at Turkey 2013 with a rocket of a shot, sent crashing into the roof of the net at Eric Antwi’s near post.

The Black Satellites were stunned and, four minutes later, they found their one-goal lead had turned into a one-goal deficit. Angelo Henriquez was the player to punish the Africans on this occasion, holding off and spinning his marker before drilling a low right-foot shot just inside the post from 20 yards. Chile were in the ascendancy now and might have added to their advantage before the interval, first when Castillo curled just over from 20 yards and then when Andres Robles headed into the side-netting from Bryan Rabello’s inviting free-kick.

Indeed, while Ghana responded well in the second half, it was the South Americans who continued to carve out the better opportunities, with Antwi twice called upon in the opening minutes to keep out powerful, goal-bound efforts from Castillo and Henriquez. The Black Satellites did, however, miss a glorious opportunity to restore parity, with Abdul Rahman Baba slicing wildly wide after bustling his way into a great shooting position ten yards from goal.

The pressure finally told, though, with 18 minutes remaining when parity was restored. Clifford Aboagye was the brains behind the goal, drifting in from the right and flicking through an incisive outside-of-the-foot pass for Ebenezer Assifuah to toe-poke the ball low beyond Melo. Neither side could find a winner within normal time, so an additional 30 minutes was required, and it was during extra time that Henriquez scored for the second time. Springing the Ghana offside trap, the Manchester United striker stretched to reach a lofted through ball from Claudio Baeza and looped a perfect header over the stranded Antwi.

However, the drama wasn’t over yet and with seven minutes of the 120 remaining, Oboagye threaded another pass through for Seidu Salifu to slot under the body of the advancing Melo. And Ghana’s remarkable escape act was completed with the final attack of the game, one minute into stoppage time in extra time, when a disastrous breakdown in communication on Chile’s line allowed Assifuah’s tame bouncing header to sneak over the line.

Ghana now head to Bursa on Wednesday, where they will face France in the semi-finals.
