Photos: Lightning strikes for Bolt as he and Maria head home

Bolt’s luck finally ran out this week as he and Maria were evicted from Big Brother: The Chase during Sunday night’s live eviction show. The Sierra Leonian heads home just a week after his love interest Betty, while the Namibian was only up for eviction after Head of House Nando saved himself and put her up in his place.

The duo is the 5th set of housemates to be evicted from Big Brother: The Chase, leaving 18 housemates competing for the USD300 000 grand prize.

It was a tense evening in the Ruby and Diamond houses moments before IK revealed the evictees. Once the SizweNtsalubaGobodo auditor had delivered the verified voting results and the Heads of House had revealed their ‘save & replace’ decisions, IK summoned Bolt from the house first, with Maria following suit.

Once on stage, Bolt told IK he’d preferred spending time in the Ruby house because it was “structured” and “neat”. He said he hadn’t struggled to bond with the other housemates since Betty’s departure last week. IK also quizzed Maria about the chat she’d had with Angelo – with him wanting more and her wanting to be friends. The Namibian thought that Nando had put her up for eviction in his place because he didn’t know her that well and felt that Cleo & Hakeem’s relationship was real.

South African Hip Hop enigma AKA brought serious charm to start off the eviction show with his hit ‘Jealousy’ before returning with Da L.E.S. to perform ‘Kontrol’, once the evictees had both joined IK on stage.

In this week’s news media segment, Boity Thulo showed viewers how to share their opinions on the daily website poll on the official Big Brother website,www.bigbotherafrica.com. Whether it’s asking about the hottest guys or which relationships are for real, the daily poll gives viewers yet another way to weigh in on The Chase.

Ruby housemates emerged victorious in Airtel Arena Showdown earlier in the week, which saw the housemates building an intricate system of bridges to move water from one side of the arena to the other. Head of House Feza chose to bring Maria and Annabel across to the Ruby house and sent Bassey & Pokello to the Diamond house.

Last week’s evicted housemates also sent final heartwarming messages to viewers following their departure from the show. Motamma was grateful for a bit of pampering outside the house and said that she held no grudges against Annabel for using her ‘save & replace’ decision to put her up for eviction. Betty said that she’d learnt a lot from her time in           The Chase and that the diversity of cultures in the houses had inspired her to travel more.

This week’s viewer vote winners were: HD PVR Decoder – Maria Serombo (Namibia); Uhuru Tablet – Julie Njambi (Kenya) and DStv Walka – Gwendoline Matura (South Africa). Don’t forget to vote to keep your favourite housemate in the game after Monday’s nominations, to stand a chance to win!

The halfway mark is almost here – and with just over 50 days to go, The Chase is only going to get tougher and more interesting! Catch all the updates on the official Big Brother website, Facebook and Twitter.

Big Brother: The Chase is headline sponsored by Airtel and produced by Endemol South Africa.

Residents of Madina were treated to an unbelievable treat on Republic Day weekend when Ghana’s reigning Best Rapper M.anifest hosted a block party and appreciation show.

As a way to give back to his teeming and loyal fans who have largely buoyed his constantly growing stardom, M.anifest held residents spellbound introducing guest after guest artist to grace the streets of Madina with hit after hit.madinafest 3

The night began with a couple of dj sets belting out favorite Ghanaian music from Highlife to Azonto and dance moves and competitions by some in the crowd.

By the time M.anifest hit the stage, fans’ appetite had been whetted. M.anifest, the man affectionately known as M dɔdɔdɔ ti dɔ, graced the stage to loud screams and appreciation from his Madina fans for whom he threw this concert to say thank you to. The energy and euphoria soared as he kept introducing guest artist after guest artist who blessed the block party held on the eve of Republic Day.

After performing a couple of his tracks, M.anifest introduced the dapper dressed Asem.madinafest c-real

Not missing a beat, Asem launched into his ‘Wasted’ track. Intoxicated by it all, the rapper went from the stage and into the arms of his adoring fans. The crowd’s energy would most certainly have carried him throughout the night but he reluctantly exited the stage by singing his hit ‘bye bye’ to the crowd.

M.anifest took the stage again, performing songs with C-Real and Lyrical Wanzam whose tongue twisting and lyrical dexterity brought the crowd to more intense cheer.

It took Chemphe’s vibes and R&B cool to even out the energy which even the outdoor venue could not contain. Swag Society also graced their stage with their unique sounds.

Gemini took the stage to a rapturous welcome performing his hit track “Don’t do” among others.

Edem ‘Go Get Em’ literally shut down the street. When he was announced and mounted the stage, there was such anticipation and urge by the crowd. With mic in hand, pose intact, the crowd reached a crescendo with his call and response. ‘Ayyyoooooo’ was the call akin to a wolfpack. Like a pack of Wolves though the crowd was hungry for more. He thrilled with Heyba, and other big tunes, cementing his status as a bonafide crowd puller and favorite.madinafest edem

Guru was a surprise guest and with his current “AL Kayida” hit making the rounds the crowd could not help themselves.

With a moving rendition of his award-winning “Makaa Maka”, Manifest bade farewell to the adoring mass by expressing his heartfelt thanks.

Pictures are worth a thousand words though. Check out the gallery of photos Photographer Rodney Quarcoo of RQV studios as they best illustrate the epic block party in Madina.

BBA UPDATE: Crush Wall: Pokello and Elikem will be reunited

As planned, the Crush Wall produced results that both Houses were rooting for. Pokello won the most crushes in the Diamond House and Elikem won in the Rubies. Both are set to reunite in the Rendezvous Room this Saturday.

When Pokello’s name was announced, you could swear she had won the lotto. Who would have thought she’d be so happy to go on a date with the man she’s been toying around with for the past few weeks. Question is has she finally decided to give the Ghanaian hunk the kind of connection he’s been waiting for?

On the other hand, Elikem was as chuffed to hear that he had the most crushes and as he sat down to pick his date, he was all too pleased to call out Pokello’s name and surname, for clarification. The two will be wined and dined by Biggie and will have an hour to do all the things they’ve been anticipating since their on and off hook up, or at least we hope. Hopefully Pokello will forget about her outside relationship for that hour and focus on her obvious feelings for Elikem. Good luck you two.

Stephanie Benson was born and raised in her home country of Ghana and began studying the piano at the tender age of 3. This early desire to play the piano was a direct result of her father playing the piano in the evenings before bedtime.

At the age of 8, she was sent to the National Academy of Music, where she also learned to play the violin and cello. During these early years Stephanie developed and honed her musical craft until at 14, when she moved to London following the death of her father.

Under the watchful eye of her uncle in London, Stephanie channeled her energies on the piano, playing, to the extent that she got a residency singing and playing the piano at one on London’s famous nightclubs.

It was during this period that Stephanie was spotted by Peter Waterman who signed her to his label PWL. With PWL Stephanie released her first recorded single ‘Now is the Time,’ which earned her a top 20 position on the UK dance charts. Stephanie began a promotional tour across Europe until the relationship with PWL came to an end.

After this period Stephanie started developing her writing skills and began writing and collaborating with other writer/artists including the likes of Andy Hill (Bucks Fizz), Terry Britton (Tina Turner) Danny Schogger (Celine Dion), Wayne Vaughn (Earth Wind and Fire), Rob Davis (Kylie Minogue), and Stevie Wonder among others.

It was during this period that Stephanie began focusing and developing her live performances, as a solo artist and with a full live band in support. Performing for many noted high-end clients and celebrities at prestigious and private events.

She has on more than one occasion been invited by Britain’s royal family and HRH Prince Charles, who, the first time he heard Stephanie perform, told her, “You are one of the most amazing performers I’ve ever seen”.

Meanwhile, the Benson Entertainment Production Institute (BEP), a music school owned by Stephanie Benson is about taking off.

The school would comprise of a modern sound recording studio and other units.

The Benson Entertainment Production Institute (BEP for short), according to her, would comprise of a modern sound recording studio, which would be used for training and commercial purposes. The Facility also intends to develop Professional International Theatre standards for musical theatre shows, stage musical concerts, rehearsal space and TV shows.

With the kind of respect and recognition she has gained over the years both locally and internationally Stephanie has stated that she will use her brand to raise awareness for the Institute to encourage more foreign interest, and affiliation with internally recognized schools, TV companies and record labels.

“My aim is to help groom potential stars of our Ghanaian talent in all fields of the industry.

A place they can come to get the professional and financial help to develop their talent within the Institute. I am starting this in a very small way, but with time I intend to develop it into something bigger” she said.

Work is steadily ongoing at the location and the school would begin operations before the end of the year.

Egypt stages Coup D’etat!

$

It’s 2013; an era of political enlightenment around Africa but Egypt did not get the memo!

What started as civil unrest and followed by a massive demonstration by anti-government protesters that has been described as probably the largest in history, Egypt’s unrest has officially been declared a Coup d’état!

The tenure of presidency of President Mohamed Mursi and his Muslim Brotherhood Government has been violently and abruptly ended after just a year in office as the Egyptian army takes over.  The top commander of the Egyptian army has issued a directive suspending the Islamist constitution and declaring the President of the Supreme Constitutional Court as interim Head of State. Earlier, he had been given an ultimatum by the army to meet the demands of the protesters to which he replied asking to share power.

The international community is shocked at how far these protests have gone. The United States has issued a statement saying it is deeply concerned about the reports coming out of Egypt.

Egypt has however declared widely their plans to put forward a quick roadmap back to democratic rule that is all inclusive. The overthrow of Mohamed Mursi’s Islamist tinged Government was supported by a vast majority of political, religious and youth leaders.

Most Egyptians had been angered by economic mismanagement and the drive of the muslim brotherhood government to entrench Islamic rule. The incident is being celebrated on the streets of Egypt as citizens go wild jubilating throughout the country. Egypt’s political front has known unrest since 2011. The world watches in bewilderment as the international commodity market predicts a hike in oil prices as the Egyptian unrests may cause a disruption in supply from the Middle East.

We are hoping there will not be any further bloodshed although we are still sceptical if the disturbances willintensify or subside.

Ghana see off Portugal to reach Under-20s quarterfinals

Ghana are through to the quarterfinals of the Under-20s World Cup in Turkey after a 3-2 victory over Portugal, inspired by a match-winning performance from substitute Yiadom Boakye.

The Italy-based striker set up the equaliser and then scored a late winner as Ghana came from 2-1 behind to seal the win. Kennedy Ashia and Michael Anaba also scored for the Black Satellites.

The victory earns them a place against Chile in the last eight after Chile’s 2-0 win over Croatia.

Kennedy Ashia had put Ghana ahead with a 25-yard effort in the 19th minute. Ghana held on until the 71st minute when defenders Tiago Ferreira and Edgar both scored within the space of two minutes to put Portugal ahead in the 73rd.

The match was to take more twists and turns with the introduction of Boakye in the 75th minute. The player, who is on Juventus’ books and has been on loan to lower league Italian side Sassuolo, made an immediate impact.

His shot at Portugal goalkeeper Jose Sa was saved, but it allowed Michael Anaba to pounce on the rebound for the equaliser.

Boakye then followed up with a goal of his own by sending a free kick through the two-man wall five minutes from time for a famous win.

Portugal dominated possession but ultimately paid the price for failing to make it count.

The 2011 runners-up had scored the most goals in the group stage but failed to convert two early chances. Aladje was left unmarked but sent his effort over the crossbar after 15 seconds while Bruma, who scored five times in three group matches, shot wide a minute later.

Ghana were the last team to qualify for the knockout stage, after losing two group matches and narrowly advanced on goal difference following a 4-1 defeat of the United States.

They will face Chile in Istanbul on Sunday for a place in the semifinals.
