The Best And Worst Of Euro 2016 – The Tactics, The Pundits And The Tat

$
0
0

Euro 2016 ended yesterday, July 10 with Portugal beating the host nation France to win the tournament. Check out below the Best and Worst – the tactics, the the pundits and the tat of the tournament according to The Guardian.

Man of the summer

Cristiano Ronaldo – ran the tournament from the start. Among his best moments: hoying a microphone into a lake; gamely posing for a selfie with a pitch-invader; a golden header in the semi-final against Wales; a tear-jerker of a penalty miss against Austria; a press conference where the press were banned from asking questions; a classic tantrum; some spite about Iceland’s “small mentality”; and one brilliant photograph (above) that kept Photoshoppers busy for days. Oh, and the ability to spit out a fully-formed Euro 2016 graphic was special too.

Not just a skilful player, Ronaldo can also gob out a replay wipe

Best breakthrough act

Everything about Iceland made sense. A solid, upbeat team backed by 8% of the nation in person and a 99.8% share of its domestic TV audience; the summer’s best chant; a viral South American-style commentator; and the tournament’s best live in-play tweets, from Reykjavík Grapevine @rvkgrapevine. Among them: “Ódinn’s breath propelled our heroic goalie to swat away that weak-ass header”; “Deep in the bowels of the earth, an ancient power stirs. Eidur is warming up”, and: “GOALIE LIKE THE CLIFF FACE AT DYRHÓLAEY. THE ONLY THING THAT WILL DESTROY HIM IS CENTURIES OF COASTAL EROSION.”

Biggest flops

Russia were lamentable but England’s collapse was more comic. Summing it up better than anything else, this Roy Hodgson moment as Iceland cruised to victory.

When you spot yourself on the big screen and want people to think you’ve got a plan…

Best tactic

Wales, Italy and Germany made 3-5-2 the summer’s tactic of choice. All three revived the 80s-throwback back-three system, and it worked. The tournament’s other big technical lessons: team spirit really does matter; grinding out a 0-0 works but wins few friends; dancing like a pony before taking a penalty can make you look foolish – more on that later; and England’s bold experiment of playing without any tactics failed to pay off.

Best individual moments

Hal Robson-Kanu against Belgium – “I grew up trying to recreate great goals I’d watched so it’s an amazing feeling when parents and teachers tell me youngsters are recreating that goal already” – and Simone Zaza from the spot against Germany. His tiptoe then blooter over the bar, having been brought on especially for the shootout, became the internet’s single biggest non-Ronaldo meme. Take your pick from Zaza as a seagull, stamping for worms; Zaza queuing for the toilet; Zaza desperate to be taken for a walk; and the Iceland commentary remix. Zaza: “I did send Manuel Neuer the wrong way but unfortunately the ball went too high. It will be with me for the rest of my life.”

El penal de Zaza narrado por el comentarista islandés.

Best innovation

Uefa get a bad press – what with their pre-tournament police raid, suspended president, confused fines policy and refusing a minute’s silence for victims of the Turkey terrorist attacks on the basis that Turkey had been eliminated in the group stage – but expanding the finals to 24 teams made for an eclectic group stage. The negatives: it was easier to qualify than get knocked out, meaning too many low-key, safety-first performances. The positives: Wales and Iceland.

Biggest letdown

The 95 law changes, debuting at the tournament following the International Football Association Board’s 12,000 word, 18-month-long review of the rules in January. The only change anyone noticed was the ball going backwards from kick-offs. They are subtle though. Next season, watch out for players being booked for standing under two metres away from throw-ins with intent to impede, and logos on corner flags.

Miss of the summer

Zlatan Ibrahimovic toe-poking over from half a yard out against Italy, only saved by an offside flag. His pre-tournament self-billing: “The legend can still deliver.”

Best touchline operator

Alan Pardew set the bar low for technical area entertainment at the FA Cup final. In France, Joachim Löw lowered it further. But Antonio Conte impressed on the sidelines with three weeks spent raging. He was caught on camera in week one motivating his defence by shouting at them: “I’ll kill you, I’ll kill you.” Coming to a Premier League dugout near you next season.

Conte apparently yelling “I will kill you, I will kill you” to Italy players after Lukaku’s chance 👀

Most indignant

Turkey’s Ozan Tufan – feeling upset with media criticism after he was caught on camera doing his hair as Croatia’s Luka Modric shaped up to score in front of him. “I don’t get how a single moment in which I do my hair is deemed a mistake. It damages my confidence.”

Worst tat

Uefa were set on beating all forms of ambush marketing to ensure they controlled the integrity and quality of Euro 2016 officially-sanctioned products. And it worked. No one tried to rip off their Official Uefa Euro 2016 Shower Gel gift pack.

Worst timing

Joe Hart. Badly timed dives and badly timed adverts. His script for the Nike ad released moments after the Iceland defeat: “I can stop anything, I will dominate my area. The only person who can beat me is me.”

Pinterest
‘I can stop anything’

Most discussed pundits

Slaven Bilic stood on a table, Thierry Henry tried his lip-twitch party piece a few times too many – but still no one matched Roy Keane for on-screen presence. When Ireland were out, Keane arrived on ITV, laid into Wales and then simmered. Captivating TV.

Sound of the summer

Joe Ledley dance tracks and Will Grigg’s On Fire couldn’t wash out the memory ofDavid Guetta and Will.i.am’s pre-tournament concert to 83,000 fans in Paris. Local media reviews of Le Grand Show included: “Le désastre”, “Le grand flop” and “La prestation calamiteuse”. Guetta called it “incredible”.

Best grasp of current affairs

Among the footballers reacting to Brexit in week three: Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini: “The main concern is a domino effect. But I don’t think the simple UK exit can change the equilibrium of the whole European economy – I don’t think the discontent should lead to disintegration.” Spain’s Nolito: “What is Brexit? I think it’s a dance. I may be wrong.” And England’s Harry Kane: “I’ve not really thought about it. I don’t think any of us have.”

Best scandal

After Russia’s humiliation, forward Aleksandr Kokorin and midfielder Pavel Mamaev went to a Monte Carlo nightclub and spent €250,000 on champagne, alleged the Russian press. The players denied it; Vladimir Putin’s spokesman attacked “a shameless display of conceit”.

And the best confusion

Among the summer’s best cases of mistaken online identity: innocent bystander and non-goalkeeper @JoeHart getting it in the neck from England fans;@IcelandFoods tweeting: “Everyone should be passing on their congratulations to @footballiceland. They are the football team. We are the UK frozen food specialists”; and Californian Facebook user Petra Fyde, asking her friends: “At the risk of sounding stupid … Does anyone know why there are a bunch of strange men in my fb inbox with messages saying WILL GRIGGS ON FIRE, YOUR DEFENSE IS PETRA FYDE?????? … What the hell is going on?”

Speaking to GhanaGist.Com after the “Point of View” Comedy Show with DKB at the National Theatre, Okyeame Kwame said what the young comedians needs is to be brave.

“So this young man [DKB] has broken the jinx.  They say that young Ghanaian men are not funny, it’s not true, they are just not brave. DKB is brave… between comedy and foolery; I don’t know which one he tilted more towards but he is an amazing guy, he made [all of] us laugh,” he told GhanaGist.Com.

On the night, DKB made jokes about various personalities including Okyeame Kwame. According to him, the Rapdacta speaks the Queen’s language like his nose is blocked.

Responding to the comedian, he said, “He [DKB] is also a ‘fool’; he who cast a joke on the Rapdacta will be considered a ‘fool’, he fought back, pause a while with a fake laughter and screamed “DKB you rock.”

Meet Christian Dordoe, The Celebrity Barber | Clientele Includes D-Black, DJ Breezy, Mic Smith, Castro, Sekou Nkrumah, Others

It was a bright Sunday afternoon as I made my way to “Rasta”, an area along the bush road (from La to Teshie) to joined a group of young corporate executives for the opening of a multi-purpose grooming centre owned by a young guy committed to making a difference in society.

Cheerful, smart, vibrant and enterprising! These are some of the attributes of Christian Dordoe, who I can best describe as a perfect example of a go-getter, filled with a positive energy and possesses the spirit of a winner.

Just like his idol, Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba and a man who has single-handedly impacted the entire economy and internet industry in China, Christian has an inspiring story to tell – from a village boy to becoming an owner of a multiple unit thriving business.

Chris, as he is mostly called, arrived in Accra in 2004 from the Volta Region convinced of finding the best opportunities in the nation’s capital to make life more meaningful and also realise his dream of becoming a successful business owner.

Chris & KMA Mayor

Without a roof over his head and a place to call a home, Chris wasn’t deterred, rather, he got himself a job as a “workhand” at a construction site to enable him keep body and soul together. He carried bags of cement, buckets of water on his head all day and also supplied mortar to the bricklayers in a wheelbarrow all day for a stipend which could barely buy him three square meals.

His God gifted skill is his most priced asset – barbering, which he discovered earlier in his life as a teenager growing up in his hometown, Mafi-Adidome. After completing his elementary education at Pentecost Preparatory Junior High School in Tapa Abotoase, Chris became a barber with his family and friends becoming his initial clientele.

Christian Dordoe shop

“Growing up for me was an exciting and challenging experience. My family did their best and provided me with basic education at one of the best schools in the village at the time. After I was done with JSS, I started barbering as that was the only thing I could do best. It is my gift from God as I didn’t learn how to barber, it comes to me naturally. With the level of development in the village, I know the only way to keep my dreams alive was to relocate to Accra and I was ready to do that no matter the cost it came with. It was convinced I was going to make it in Accra so I embarked on the journey”, Chris said.

After months of working on the construction site, he went on to work with a couple of barbershops. There, he realised how he could make a livelihood as a barber and also achieve his dreams. Apart from the barber shop, he did other menial jobs to save up to enable him to rent a small place which served as his shop and residence.

Christian Dordoe

“Business was sometimes very good and at other times very bad. There were times I got excited and other times I got disappointed and very frustrated as I had the rest of the family back in the village to support. There were times I did extra jobs including buying and selling just to augment what I was getting from the shop. To be honest, it was a challenging moment for me as I had underestimated how frustrating Accra could be before leaving the village”, according to Chris.

Chris kept his head up in spite of all the challenges and was motivated to realise his dream to succeed in Accra. He was regular at church and had few friends who continually encouraged him never to give up.

Others would disappoint him sometimes but that made him stronger than discouraging him. From one business to the other in addition to the shop, Chris continued to work hard to acquire a bigger place to transform the business.

This led him to register and establish C- Dors Executive Grooming, an exclusive men’s grooming outfit currently with two branches, one in Osu, behind Radio XYZ and the other at Rasta, along the bush road from La to Teshie.

Christian Dordoe at work

Services offered by his outfit are haircut, shaves, manicures & pedicures, shoe shine, facials & massage, waxing services and hair laser removal. They also provide private and special services in the comfort of the clients’ home or office.

His clientele base is diverse, from corporate executives, politicians to showbiz personalities including Black Avenue Music’s boss, Desmond Blackmore (D Black), DJ Breezy, Mic Smith and Castro. Others are Sekou Nkrumah, Obed Psych (of urban gospel group, Preachers), Kojo Bonso (former Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Mayor), Joseph Adu (CEO, Devtraco) and Eric Goka (owner of Twist Pub).

About his future ambitions, Chris said “I am very grateful to God for how far he has brought me and also to everyone who has contributed to the success of this business, it’s a dream come through. At this point, I wish to establish a big retail outlet to stock several lifestyle products and brands, from clothing to other fashion accessories with an exclusive eatery and wine shop. It’s going to be a one stop shop for everything lifestyle”.

He subscribes to the philosophy of Pope John Paul XXIII “Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do.”

Ghanaian celebrity blogger, Ameyaw Debrah has resorted to crowdfunding to raise $8,000 to invest in a new project that would bring an amazing new experience to readers of his blog, www.ameyawdebrah.com.

According to the blogger, the project would include a responsive website and an optimized mobile compatible theme which would make it easy, less expensive and cumbersome for readers. It would also include a state of the art mobile app for Android and iOS mobile devices. The app will capture all the exciting news from the blog and bring users up to date on trending news and events in photos and videos.

He explained: “The project is estimated at $8,000 and I am calling all readers and fans of the blog to donate their widow’s mite towards the actualization of the new experience. Why don’t I pay for it myself? Well I am creating an experience for my community of users so they enjoy what it is I love to do.”

“I am not doing it for commercial gains because Ghana’s online space does not even encourage such investments; advertisers/agencies are still into cronyism and heavily reliant on traditional media. So although I love my readers, I don’t love them too much to bear the cost and risk alone. hahaha”

J Initiative And Tigo Engage School Children On Internet Safety

While the internet has opened up a world of endless possibilities by revolutionising the way people communicate, learn and live, there are downsides, particularly for children.

Children from low and middle-income countries are less likely to use the internet from home, and are more likely to go online from cyber cafes, where they are at greater risk of encountering inappropriate images and online and offline solicitation, disclosed a recent report by UNICEF’s Innocenti Research Centre (IRC).

In light of this, J Initiative, a youth focused non-governmental organisation in partnership with Tigo Ghana, have sensitised over 1,500 school children in 14 basic schools in the Greater Accra region on the need to stay safe and protected when using the internet. This forms part of several activities lined up for their Child Online Safety and Protection Campaign.

At the climax of the internet safety awareness programme for the 14 schools at Burma Camp Basic and Garrison Schools, resource persons from J Initiative and Facebook UK educated the children on how to detect suspicious persons and activities online, as well as, how to keep their personal information secured.

In her presentation, the Executive Director of J-Initiative, Awo Aidam Amenyah, highlighted some of the dangers the internet could bring when used wrongly.

Touching on the success of the three-week awareness programme, Ms. Amenyah said: “Since we began the awareness programme in basic schools, a lot of parents have reached out to us asking for advice on how best to protect their children. Some even ask for counsellors to help them deal with children who are already engaged in bad internet practices such as explicit media content.”

She also explained that the overwhelming response they have been receiving from teachers and the students is indicative that there are deep-seated issues that need to be addressed through appropriate regulation and legislation.

She was excited some schools had requested for assistance to incorporate internet safety in their ICT curricular.Tigo engage school children on internet safety

CEO of End Point Homeopathic Clinic, Dr. Adu Boateng has donated 5000GHC to the veteran Ghanaian actor Jagga Pee to pay for his medical bills.

The money was handed over to the veteran actor by comedian and musician Kwame A-Plus who thanked Dr Adu Boateng for his kind gesture.

The veteran actor Jagga Pee, born Abeiku Nyame few days ago appealed to President John Dramani Mahama and generous Ghanaians to come to aid to help him pay for his medical bills.

Jagga Pee told a reporter from RazzOnline that;

My brother Reagan Mends, things are not well for me at all. I have been very sick for almost a year now. Money to pay for my hospital bills has been very difficult since I don’t often get jobs like I use to. I went unconscious and was admitted at the Holy Trinity Hospital then was later transferred to the 37 Military Hospital. I still owe the two hospitals Ghc2,500.00 for bills. I  can’t pay the bills so I am appealing to president Mahama to come to my aid by helping me with his’“celebrities for Mahama project’.

Join us to say a big Thank You to the End Point Homeopathic Clinic and Dr. Adu Boateng.

‘Take Action, Inspire Change’ is the theme of Nelson Mandela International Day which is being observed today across the globe in recognition of the anti-apartheid icon’s commitment to democracy, racial justice and human rights.

As in previous years, people everywhere are being encouraged to perform at least 67 minutes of community service, one minute for every year that Mandela served others through his struggle for social justice.

“Let us seek to continue building on Nelson Mandela’s legacy of selflessness and deep sense of shared purpose,” says the United nations secretary general in his message to mark the day. “Let us heed the call to “never cease working to build a better world for all”.

From this year, Nelson Mandela International Day also focuses on the rights of prisoners, conditions of imprisonment, and the value of prison staff — addressed in the United Nations’ Revised Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, also called ‘Nelson Mandela Rules’ that were launched in October 2015.nmdnodate copy

Zapp Mallet: There Is More Money In Commercials Than Music Production

Experienced music producer Zapp Mallet has said that currently recording commercials pay more than music production.

Speaking to Flex Newspaper, Zapp Mallet he said most of the time, what an artiste is willing to pay for a track does not even reach half of what can be made from one commercial, adding that, “I’m therefore making money from commercials, jingles and the likes, than I earn from music production.”

He continued that, currently there is no motivation to produce music.

“Some of us come from a generation where we work for the love of the job, but the motivation changes at a certain stage. I’m still hanging on because I do it for the passion. I wish musicians would pay more. The system is rough for everybody, but I wish it gets better.”

”In the name of hype, lies have become truth. I hope these sound engineers who claim they are making enough money from music production are indeed earning it. With my experience in this industry, I know what’s on the ground in real life. Producers outside are making huge sums of money. Let’s work hard for an industry where everybody earns what is due them’’, Zapp Mallet concluded.Zapp Mallet
