As part of its strategic focus in working with UNICEF to accelerate birth registration in Ghana through mobile technology, Tigo has presented 540 tablets phones with internet connectivity to the Births and Deaths Registry (BDR) for the pilot phase of the automated birth registration programme.

The tablets will allow birth registration attendants from the Births and Deaths Registry to electronically capture details of all new births in 300 communities across Ghana.

Launched in May 2016, the automated birth registration programme is expected to make a significant contribution to an improved national average registration rate, an increase from 65 percent of all children under age one to at least 75 percent by the end of 2017.

A successful pilot will also contribute to progress under Ghana’s National Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Strategic Plan 2016-2020, which aims at reaching 100 percent of children by end of 2020.

Based on experience in other countries like Tanzania and Uganda, Tigo Ghana partnered with UNICEF Ghana in developing the new automated birth registration system.

The outcomes for the children are clear. It will eliminate the lengthy and ineffective manual birth registration procedures.

Through mobile technology, the new registration process marks a significant shift in accelerating birth registration in Ghana, while monitoring and tracking the performance of field agents in real-time.

For Tigo, the investment in the automated birth registration system forms part of its broader digital lifestyle agenda which focuses on constant connectivity to work, create and share in a joined up way.

UNICEF on the other hand remains committed to the welfare and wellbeing of children. An automated birth registration system will establish a strong foundation to build a new generation with official legal identity documents. The automated birth registration system is the first of its kind in Ghana. launch of the BDR/TIGO/Ghana partnership on the 4th of May 2016 signifies the commitment by all partners to continue working together to bring the new system to scale and to sustain initial results.Tigo donates tablets

Nudity should never be exchanged for fashion

He is controversial and it is  therefore not surprising that Counsellor George Lutterodt has criticised   nudity and exposure in the Ghanaian showbiz industry. He describes  the trend as prostitution.

In an interview with Showbiz, Counsellor Lutterodt described the trend of celebrities exposing their breasts and cleavages on red carpet events and other entertainment platforms as insanity and called on women everywhere to rise up and redeem the image of feminism.

“I believe our people are getting out of hand and it’s  time someone let them know that nudity is prostitution. For me, whatever you show is advert and we only advertise for purposes of sales and marketing. Nudity should never be exchanged for fashion,” he said.

“We are role models, people wish to become like us, and once this is so, we have to bring some sanity in the way we dress. Our celebrities have gone naked in the name of fashion. You go for programmes and see people virtually naked just to be fashionable,” he added.Deborah Vanessa_opt

He mentioned that as role models and people in the public eye, celebrities have a duty to set positive examples in order to train the future generation.

“If you think empowerment of women means they have to go about showing their cleavages, then I beg to differ. If you are, you do not have to show your nakedness, rather you make people assess you based on your work,” he added.

The outspoken counsellor also criticised the increasing trend of leaked sex-tapes and pictures and warned couples to desist from the habit of making and sharing such content among themselves. efya_opt

“Any man or woman who requests for your nude picture because they have missed you is calling you a harlot, prostitute and has disrespected you. If a man truly respects you, he will never ask you to send him a nude picture. This is disrespect to womanhood’.

“If you miss your partner, you have to physically go to them, you do not request for a sex video, which will one day become a shame to them,” he added.

“All these distant relations that people request videos and pictures have led people to become lesbians and homosexuals because they begin to fondle themselves and this leads to other things,” he said.

Deborah Vanessa

Deborah Vanessa

He warned men to be wary of women who voluntarily record and send such videos to them .

“Only prostitutes will sell themselves for gain. If you are going out with her and she sends you such a video, then know that you are in the biggest danger of your life because she is not a woman but a prostitute in disguise,” he stated.

Not your average pop stars, but Reggie N Bollie’s Afrobeats is the sound of summer

Reginald Ainooson and Ishmael Hamid are not your average pop stars.

Ainooson, 29, used to be a night receptionist at the Premier Inn in Farnborough and was once training to be an accountant. Hamid, 31, lives in the quiet Cambridgeshire town of St Neots with his wife, stepson aged six, and nine-month-old daughter. They make unlikely divas. You can’t imagine them throwing TVs out of hotel windows or demanding bowls of blue M&Ms.

“We feel so grateful and privileged,” Ainooson says, when we meet in a central London private members’ club. “But we’re still at the beginning,” Hamid adds. “Because the moment you feel ‘I’ve made it’, you start to slow down.”

The duo, better known as Reggie N Bollie (Hamid’s nickname is an acronym which stands for “Best of Lyrics and Lines in Entertainment”), are currently celebrating the success of a top 10 single after they were voted runners-up in The X Factor last December.

They stood out on the show from the off. Amid the balladeers and boybands, Reggie N Bollie were the high-energy performers who won over the pubic with Afrobeats and unstoppable positivity. Their story, too, is not the usual reality-TV fodder. Both were born and raised in Accra, Ghana, and overcame difficult upbringings before finding success in Britain.

Hamid’s parents divorced when he was little and he was raised by his paternal grandparents. They died when he was 14 and he went to live with his other set of grandparents.

“It made me always over-cautious,” he says now. “I thought: if I don’t do things right for myself, I might end up in a situation where no one can help.”

Ainooson’s father left the family before he was born. His mother remarried but that relationship broke down when Ainooson was a teenager. She was a seamstress and struggled to make ends meet, and he remembers that there was never enough money for new shoes. When he went to his first Holy Communion, his mother “had to pray someone would bring her clothes for me to wear”.

Recently, Ainooson’s eight-year-old son had his first Holy Communion “and it made me so happy and proud driving my son to that: in a new suit, in a big posh car.

Reggie N Bollie

Reggie N Bollie

“At the moment, I’m saving money to get my mum in a nice house and to take care of her,” he says. “I want her to know that her only son has been able to make her smile after all that she did for me.”

Growing up, both Hamid and Ainooson had a love of music and won dance competitions as adolescents. But as adults they found it difficult to make a living as musicians in Ghana, despite Hamid releasing a single in 2003, You May Kiss Your Bride, which is still played at weddings across west Africa.

Separately, they decided to make the move to the UK. Ainooson’s wife was expecting his second child in 2010 and, he recalls, “I was thinking, ‘No, I have to give it up, forget music. I have to provide for my family.’”

Hamid’s managers thought he would stand more chance of professional success in Britain. The move was relatively smooth because Ghana is a Commonwealth country.

Still, those first few years of acclimatisation were hard. Hamid and Ainooson knew each other slightly in Ghana. In the UK they cemented their friendship over the phone. “We used to call ourselves and tease ourselves because we were so broke and [we’d] laugh about how broke we were,” says Ainooson. “We used to say ‘Have you ever been so broke you wish Barclays [bank] had a 50p limit of money transfer?’” He laughs. “It had got to that point! We really wanted to change our lives.”

4937

Ainooson took on a series of odd jobs to make ends meet: night receptionist, food and beverage team leader. He briefly worked in a call centre chasing strangers for unpaid debt. “I stopped that after two weeks,” he says. “It wasn’t for me because I couldn’t be nice to people on the phone.” Every evening he would go to Farnborough College to study for his accountancy exams, often only getting four or five hours’ sleep a night.

“In an ideal world, there wouldn’t be any need for migration,” he explains, “but for the two of us, who were actively doing music in Ghana, there wasn’t enough for us. In the UK, the systems and structures work: if you write a song, you will get money. If you’re a journalist, you get paid for what you write. When you’re doing so much for less money [in Ghana], you’re forced to find a way out.”

Partly because of this, Ainooson is strongly in favour of Britain remaining part of the EU. Somewhat unexpectedly, he also reveals himself to be a fan of the prime minister.

“I like David Cameron’s approach,” Ainooson says. “He goes in there and he debates his corner, he fights. [He says] ‘Well, we will be in the EU but we can’t be giving our benefits to anyone that’s coming. I would like it to be maybe you work here for three, four years before we can give you that. We will be in European Union but we need to keep our currency and all that.’

“So I think Cameron is doing amazing, and if he keeps on, that’s what I think the UK needs: be part of it but still be able to say, this is what works for me and that’s why I’m going to be part of it.”

They both agree Britain has been “welcoming”. Ainooson only experienced racism once “and it was a black guy like me!” He whoops with laughter.

After arriving in the UK, the pair still got together to make music as a hobby – for a while, they wanted to call themselves Fullish Men until their wives said it sounded too like “foolish”. Briefly they were known as Menn On Point and entered Britain’s Got Talent but didn’t make it past the audition stage. The X Factor was the last throw of the dice. Neither of them thought they would progress. “At the end of the day, we saw it as a way to showcase talent,” says Hamid. “We expected four Nos [from the judges], but then we got four Yeses.”

Reggie N Bollie went on to be mentored by Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and were eventually signed by Syco, Simon Cowell’s record label. They returned to Ghana earlier this year to shoot the video for their debut single, New Girl, and were overwhelmed by crowds who had gathered at the airport to greet them.

“It was amazing, honestly,” says Hamid. “We never thought, leaving and going back, we’d get that reception. To see people holding up banners and chanting our names, to tell us we were right to follow our dreams … It was really heartwarming.”

MzVee BET Awards nomination, Yah or Nope?

$
0
0

Lynx Entertainment signed female Dancehall artiste, MzVee, has been trending for some time now. If you know what I mean, the young lady is trending because she surprisingly made the cut for the Best International Act: Africa category at the 2016 Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards.

This is not her first time experiencing the BET Awards. Last year, she was nominated in the then newly created Best New International Artist Viewers’ Choice Awards category which she lost  to Uganda’s Eddy Kenzo.

But what do I mean by she surprisingly got nominated? Well, there is no known category definition or criteria for the nominees, especially the Best International Act category. Clearly, looking at the number of Ghanaian musicians available for the nominations, MzVee was and still remains the less favourite to be nominated.

This is simple if we are focusing on relevance and vibrancy in the year. Yes, MzVee has been very active and busy in the year, mounting different stages, at least that explained why she got nominated at the 17th Vodafone Ghana Music Awards where she won the Best Female Vocalist of the Year. However, she hasn’t been that relevant.

Don’t get it twisted, being active and relevant are two different things – they are not the same. A musician can be active and stay irrelevant and vice versa. But many musicians were active and relevant in the year, at least compared to MzVee, but she was nominated instead at their expense. Fair enough; but at the same time, many people think otherwise. The mixed feelings that erupted after  her nomination are based on certain key points from my perspective.

Prior to the release of the nominations, previous nominees and winners, Sarkodie and Stonebwoy, as well as rapper and current VGMAs Artiste of the Year, EL and Dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale, were names  which came out as favourites to get the slot.

All said and done, MzVee would be competing for the 2016 Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards Best International Act: Africa category alongside South Africa’s AKA, Cassper Nyovest and Black Coffee, Nigeria’s Wizkid and Yemi Alade, Tanzania’s Diamond Platinumz and Ivorian Serge Beynaud at the awards slated for Sunday, June 26, this year  at the Microsoft Theatre In Los Angeles, United States of America.

I mentioned  the key reasons why MzVee’s nomination has created a lot of mixed feelings and reactions from Ghanaians. Unfortunately, Ghanaians cannot blame MzVee for the nomination, instead the blame must be shifted to the BET Awards and here are the reason.Mzvee BET 2016

No Criteria for selection

It is understandable that some people aren’t happy about MzVee’s nomination. This is because, as Ghanaians, we are aware that an award must have a basis for nominating people and not throw out the nominations without  a particular criterion which  the general public do not  know about.

The Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards currently doesn’t have any criterion for  nominating musicians for the annual awards scheme and that is a serious indictment on the awards scheme.

Last year, Dancehall artiste, Stonebwoy became the first Dancehall artiste from Ghana to be nominated in the BET Awards and the second winner of the awards after Sarkodie co-won it with Nigeria’s Wizkid in 2012.

Speaking on Peace FM, an Accra based radio station, Stonebwoy said  he was not aware of any laid down criteria for selection.

“Hmm, I seriously don’t know the criteria they use over there. When I was nominated and I went there, I asked their rep who was dealing directly with me all through as to the criteria they use in selection, but shockingly, the rep told me there is no fixed criteria.”

“Maybe, it’s their code of ethics not to disclose what goes into the selection process and according to the rep, every year and the criteria they think would suit the award, the direction the awards is heading to and more..”, he said.

For awards of this magnitude, just nominating musicians without any laid down rules and  regulation doesn’t show  seriousness at all. If African-Americans do not care about or believe in any criteria for selection in their various categories, Africans in Africa and for that matter, Ghanaians do believe and care because we can differentiate between an active and relevant musician.

All over the world, every award scheme has a category definition used  to nominate people . The prestigious Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is a typical example.

A search on the BET nomination process, brings out, “There is a voting academy made up of about 500 people from the music industry, media, and bloggers. BET sends out ballots electronically and voters nominate, in all the different categories, who they think should be award nominees. These are collated by a group called “Yangaroo” that works on other awards shows as well, and they narrow it to the top five nominees, and send that list back out to the academy to vote on the winner”.

Who are those music industry personnel, media and bloggers who help in the balloting to get people to be nominated? I think this will help Ghanaians and to a large extent, the general followers of BET Awards to understand the nitty-gritty of the awards.

Back in Ghana, even the annual Vodafone Ghana Music Awards  which  we lambast and criticise needlessly every year doesn’t just nominate musicians based on how they feel in a particular year.

Instead, there are  laid down criteria for selections in the numerous categories. Also, these criteria are updated and edited yearly whenever there is a need to.

Needless noise about her nominations

“This is just the beginning for Ghana and the females in the industry and I hope a lot of them are going to do better things, bigger and better things MzVee told Jeremie on Live Breakfast Club on Live FM in her first interview after the nomination.

I personally do not have any bad feelings about her nominations. But like I indicated earlier, most people would have opted for Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy, Sarkodie or  EL for the  nomination instead of MzVee.

Stonebwoy and Sarkodie because they have been there and seen it all and are still doing whatever  they did to be nominated  previously. Shatta Wale because he is currently the biggest musician in Ghana right now.

But  people would go for EL  because they  have been under the illusion that any artiste who wins the VGMA Artiste of the Year gets an automatic slot in the BET Awards. I’m very glad that, that mindset has been shot down by the organisers of the BET Awards. Ghanaians must wake up from their sleep and smell the coffee.

The BET Awards were established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment . The awards are presented annually, and are broadcast live on BET.

Until we know of the criteria for selection, which BET Awards doesn’t have, let’s leave the girl alone and wish her well.

Win or lose, she has the BET Awards nomination on her CV and that is no mean achievement. I do not know about you but MzVee’s nomination is a Yah for me.

The year’s edition scheduled to take place at the Accra International Conference Centre would be headlined by Bob James. Also on the bill are saxophonist Tom Braxton as well as local acts such as Aka Blay, Ben Ayisah, Kyekyeku and Constant Boty.

Speaking at the launch, Mawuko Afadzinu, Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs at Stanbic Bank Ghana said this year’s event is a progressing of what they had organized previously with Peter White and Earl Klugh.

“Over the past three years, we have been ensuring that the Stanbic Jazz Festival gains recognition as a stop on the global jazz calendar by presenting top-flight musicians to the people of Ghana,” he said.

“This year we are presenting Bob James to cement the plan of making this a must-attend event on the jazz circuit. Stanbic Bank’s association with such world class talent is to buttress the point that we aim to deliver world class service.”

June 3rd 2015 Fire & Flood Disaster in Accra | Watch Aerial Drone Footage

Today, June 3, 2016 marks a year that the Goil filling station and flood tragedy took place at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra with over 300 people directly affected.

The 2015 Accra floods resulted from heavy continuous rainfall in Accra, the largest city in Ghana. The rain started on 1 June 2015. The floods have resulted in heavy traffic on the roads in the city and also a halt in commercial activities as markets were flooded and workers trapped. Mayor of Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije described the flooding as critical. At least 25 people have died from the flooding directly, while a petrol station explosion caused by the flooding killed at least 200 more people.

On June 3, 2015, a GOIL fuel station near Kwame Nkrumah Interchange was burnt with people and vehicles in the vicinity. The fire also burnt a Forex Bureau and Pharmacy nearby. Over 200 people are feared dead and bodies have been moved to the 37 Military Hospital. The hospital later announced they are unable to hold more bodies. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. On 4 June 2015 the Mayor of Accra Alfred Vanderpuije, Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, Nii Armah Ashitey and President John Mahama visited the scene.firevict

Daily Graphic reports that, according to a drainage engineer, Mr Wise Ametefe, the floods were experienced because there were inadequate water channels in the Accra metropolis which made it impossible for flood water to flow freely.

On the cause of the fire, also a five-member committee was set up by the government to investigate the causes of the fire disaster. The report said the fire was ignited by one Seth Kwesi Ofosu, who did not dispose of properly the butt of a cigarette he was smoking. The remote cause, however, was the fact that there was a leakage of the fuel tanks at the filling station due to the flood and the fuel had mixed up with the flood water.

Below is an aerial drone footage of the June 3rd 2015 Fire and Flood Disaster in Accra made available to GhanaGist.Com by Skybyyrd Media; a US/Ghana based Production Company.

American singer Prince died of opioid overdose

US singer Prince died of an opioid overdose, sources have told Associated Press and a Minnesota website.

A law enforcement official, who is close to the investigation, told AP this was established by tests after the singer’s death in April in Minneapolis.

Detectives have already questioned a doctor who saw the 57-year-old twice in the weeks before he died.

Prescription painkillers were in the singer’s possession following his death, officials told US media in May.

A police warrant has also revealed that Dr Michael Schulenberg prescribed medication to the singer on 20 April – the day before he died.

The warrant does not say what was prescribed or whether Prince took the drugs.

AP says the law enforcement official spoke on condition of anonymity on Thursday because he was not authorised to speak to the media.

Separately, the Star Tribune in Minnesota quoted a source with knowledge of Prince’s death investigation as saying he died from an overdose of painkillers.

Officials in Minneapolis said after a post-mortem examination that there had been no reason to believe that Prince’s death was suicide.

Prince was found unresponsive in a lift at his Paisley Park Studios on the morning of 21 April, local officials said. First responders tried to revive him with CPR but he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Artists from around the world and Prince’s numerous fans later paid tributes to the star.

Prince was cremated in a private ceremony on 24 April. The singer’s family are understood to be planning to stage a public memorial in August.

He was a prolific writer and performer from a young age, reportedly writing his first song when he was seven.

A singer, songwriter, arranger and multi-instrumentalist, Prince recorded more than 30 albums. His best known hits include Let’s Go Crazy and When Doves Cry.
