Politicians Have Failed The Youth – JM Writes

Imagine putting your trust in your partner after he promised you marriage only to realize he has left you for someone else, how would you feel? DISAPPOINTED and the consequences are grievous sometime resulting in suicide or murder and that’s exactly what the politicians have done to the youth.

The truth is everyone can survive when the system is right that’s why every decision they take have direct effect on us.

They promise us heaven and earth then they serve us hell on a silver platter.

When I say politicians I mean all from the time of Nkrumah till date just that the system has grown from bad to worse and if care is not taken may escalate.

The worrying part is that most of the leaders now are youth and they are the ones lying to the youth creating unnecessary tension. When you have students threatening to whip ministers with water can you tell me that everything is okay?

JM

JM

I observe a lot and trust me the system is really crazy. The youth struggles to finish school by learning hard and paying high fees only to come out to meet no jobs and those with jobs are losing it because of unbearable utilities and dumsor.

I believe it’s time we told the politicians the truth so that they change their ways before things gets out of hand.

My single “Its So Crazy” seeks to let the politicians know that things are just not right and “E No Easy” also seeks to tell the youth to calm down because the future of every nation depends on the youth and this country is all we have and that even though times are hard, with Jah as our Guide we shall survive.

#GhanaGist Star Of The Week: Funny Face | Swag-On Entertainment CEO

This week, GhanaGist.com wants to bring to light one of Ghana’s comic brand that has put smiles on many and has become an household name with due credit to the weekly Chorkor Trotro TV Series.

Some call him Chemu because of his role play in Chorkor Trotro. Others call him the “Swag-On Papa”. I’m sure a lot of is comical displays and works will be running through your mind now. But rest your smiles and let’s probe the life of this comical celebrity.

The Kwahu Abetifi native, Benson Nana Yaw Oduro Boateng started as a comic entertainer at the early stages of his career through the tertiary institutions and small organized party events but had his major breakthrough when he appeared on the Night of 1010 Laughs in the year 2010 organized by Charterhouse.

Funny Face is not only noted for comedy and acting but has a versatile trade with music inclusive. He has released songs like Odo Bekumi featuring Castro and Samira, Banana, Basabasa featuring Bisa kdei, Daabu Daabu featuring D2, Aponkye, and My Car in appreciation to Adebayor, Cow and Chicken and the recent Go Down Low featuring Joe Deevans.

Funny Face at Vodafone Ghana Music Awards

Funny Face at Vodafone Ghana Music Awards

He has also made cameo appearances in Castro and Asamoah Gyan’s Odo, D2’s Mama Ne Dada among others.

He is a testimony of how raw talents can mature to Icons. A comical brand that has gained affiliations with major corporate entities that endorses and bills him for ads and endorsements.

He spearheaded the Vodafone Ghana Red Campaign. He also toured 120 various basic and secondary schools with Zoom Lion Ghana Limited educating them on the essence of sanitation and environmental cleaning. Magic Malt Beverage Drink and Heaven Black Mosquito Coil are among the few adverts he has featured.

He always says his talent growth was per exploration of his earlier living condition. He told one reporter in the UK “Hunger!!! When hunger strikes, you’ll know what to do with your life to stay strong. I grew up in a very poor background and it’s only by God’s grace and my mother’s love that I’ve been able to reach this far. God picked me from nowhere and has now placed me somewhere.”

One will say Elizabeth Nana Adjoa Ntim, a C.I.D by profession is very lucky to be married to Funny Face. Despite the challenges in every marital home, she will be full of enough fun, humour and happiness from the Swag-On Boss.

Funny Face and wife Elizabeth Nana Adjoa Ntim

Funny Face and wife Elizabeth Nana Adjoa Ntim

I propose my Editor In Chief, Ebenezer Anangfio will give me the opportunity to grant her a lengthy interview so we know what happens at the “Swag On” Home with her husband.

Funny Face is always good at every task he engages himself and with the core intends of entertaining people with laughter. The addition of Funny Face at the recent Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) was a right choice and he delivered to audience satisfaction with his humorous stage words.

In relation to awards nominations he describes his music as senseless and I guess that is the reason no music critic raise concerns about his songs not been nominated.

He is a celebrated icon by kids and he has an annual Charity fund raising event, The Funny Face Fun Festival which assembles kids from all walks of life to have fun and he presents some rates of the gate proceeds to Charity.

You should witness one of it and you will be dumbfounded by the turn up and how the kids sing along and hail his “senseless” songs.

A durbar of management and staff of leading security firm, Edern Security Services, has been held at the company’s headquarters in Achimota Accra.

Held on May Day, it was to celebrate the hardworking security staff of the company who for years have contributed to Edern’s claim to fame as the country’s most preferred private security company.

The event, which had members of its board in attendance as well as some distinguished personalities from the Ghana Police Service, also had a core of the administrative staff take part.

Awards were given to deserving workers, who put up an exceptional show of dedication to work during the year under review.

Certificates were also given to participants of a specially-organized Counter Terrorism training programme put together by the company late last year.Edern Security Holds Durbar For Workers

The overall best worker award went to John Hagan, a driver with the company. A special citation accompanying his award praised his valour to the company’s growth. An elated Hagan said “this will go a long way to encourage my other colleagues.”

Award winners received plaques and cash.

Addressing the durbar, DCOP Rev. David Ampah Bennin of the Public Affairs Directorate of the Ghana Police Service implored the workers to uphold and defend the integrity of the work they do, as that was the only way they would progress in their chosen career.

His points were reechoed by Chairperson of the Board Mrs. Florence Hutchful, who also added that it was important for them to exhibit decency at all times.Edern Security Holds Durbar For Workers

Managing Director of Edern Security Services, Paul Quartey, underscored the importance of the durbar, adding the company values the contribution of its staff towards its continuous growth.

Edern he said will continue to be the leader in the private security business in Ghana.

Chief Supt. Amartey, Director of Operations, Ghana Police Service, and Anthony Namooa, Secretary to the board were also in attendance.

Plight Or Pranks; Offending The Sensibilities Of The Nation

$
0
0

In recent times, the nation’s sensibilities and spirit of solidarity have been stridently tested and sore punctured by a series of “plight or prank” sagas; with each of these heady stuff drawing an increasing groan of  exasperation from the nation.

And perhaps, because the practice of estimating the cost of responding to disasters and emergency situations in this country is – for want of  a better description – still rudimentary, many are unable to appreciate the harmful impact such behaviours have on the nation’s image, the economy and our collective psyche. However, I believe we have our finger on the pulse of many people in our country today, if we say enough of the “April fools”.

My five-year-old granddaughter who has always pretended to be beating her little cousin has lately been telling her,  “…One of these days I will beat you for real”. As a nation, we must snap the trap before we get hurt really bad. But the question is, how do we go about it?

The stories

Not quite long ago, we had Joyce Dzidzor Mensah, till then, an AIDS Ambassador, who went on  air to declare that she never tested positive for HIV/AIDS, contrary to what  we were made to believe.  This was after years of service in that role as an HIV/AIDS ambassador; having earned the trust of Ghanaians and successfully built her reputation and resource base as an educator of the youth and students.

Last year, the nation woke up to another rude shock when it was given a new prank deal. The popular boxer, Braimah Kamoko, also known as “Bukom Banku“, orchestrated a rumour about his “death” through a motor accident. His reason for doing that was for him to measure how much he was loved; and to gauge people’s reaction to his death.

Through that,  he saw that Ghanaians really loved him. When questioned about his approach, he saw nothing wrong with the panic, the trauma, the tears and the pandemonium he threw his community into and the impact of the shock the news of his death might have had on the nation. What a queer way to test  popularity! It was not surprising, therefore, to see him struggling to apologise to the nation for what he did.

Bukom Banku

Bukom Banku

I think it would have been more beneficial to him if he had tried to write his own obituary.  Embarking on the “Write your  obituary” exercise is highly beneficial, particularly for those who aren’t too sure of where life is taking them.

That would have offered him the opportunity to analyse his own life history to the point where he could project his future based on the past. Looking back on his life and what he had done with it, he would have realised that his life and that of people close to him would only become miserable down the road if he failed to take  positive corrective actions to right the negatives and the pitfalls. His corrective actions would then leave a much better picture of him than this big ego thing of trying to deceive the nation.

And now, Naana Appiah Antwi – aka Adaeze Onyinyechie Ayoka or Ms Ada- just staged her own “kidnapping and sexual assault”, after which she is alleged to have posted her nude pictures on social media.

Her actions not only muddied the waters of our compassion; it has gravely seared the nation’s conscience. It has shaken to the core the cultural adroitness towards the issue of violence against women. How do we react to the next case of kidnap and sexual assault  of another woman? Do we have to believe it?

The institutions and their responses

The  tango between Joyce Mensah and the Ghana AIDS Commission  put the latter very much  under the spotlight. It did call into question the commission’s credibility as an honest global partner in the fight against HIV/AIDS and how strong its work ethics were. The impact of the negative press negatively affected the nation’s image abroad.

How could this have happened? Were the protocols guiding the recruitment and engagement of persons for such roles critical and elaborate enough?

What regime did the commission have in place for monitoring its  ambassadors? Were the ambassadors undergoing periodic checks to assess and monitor their state of health, physically and mentally?

My interactions with HIV/AIDS ambassadors elsewhere seem to suggest that they were kept abreast of new developments in the evolution of the pandemic, through the alignment of such new information with their current test. For example, if it was about strains or viral loads, it was about their data and how they were impacted that were being cited to educate and inform.

Did we observe this with our ambassadors? Or were they made to concern themselves with just the basics?

As a commission of that repute, whose programmes were largely funded through donor support, it wouldn’t matter how it managed to save its face, its reputation and approach to work  was sure to have  come under measure of closer scrutiny of its partners. And from muted reactions of suspicion to threats of suspension or withdrawal of support, our development partners would have had this wide range of options to act on as a result of the story.

What has happened to the case?  Should we “let sleeping dogs lie” because the issue is off the air? As a nation, we got bruised alongside the commission; it is, therefore, only fair that we ask, especially for the assurance that measures  have been put in place to stymy any similar occurrence.

And now the weird story of Ms Ada that put our teeth on edge. Why did she stage her abduction and gang rape? How did the police, who claim to have knowledge of four previous complaints by the same actress, handle her before she had the audacity to act the fifth episode?

Life And Death: The Confession Of Three Sakawa Boys

$
0
0

I became interested in sakawa two years ago when I had nothing. No roof on my head, no food to eat and no pesewa in my account. But now I boast of $ 2 million in my account and a six-bedroom house at Kasoa in the Central Region. I’m pretty sure this is the kind of life every young man wants, but I will gladly give them up if there is a way out for me to be free again.

“Sometimes you get lucky to be instructed to just sleep with about 70 dark-skinned ladies in a month and collect their vagina fluid. But in worse scenarios, the task is inconceivable,” reveals a 34-year-old sakawa man.

While they drive in flashy vehicles and appear to enjoy life, the life of a sakawa boy, the Daily Graphic gathered, is one characterised by sorrow, pain and regrets.

For Abuda (not his real name), the pain and frustration of the sacrifice he had to perform once in five weeks had become “a permanent pain on his heart every day” because they were unimaginable.

He recalled that while eating at the Magbees Restaurant in Kasoa, two months ago, he was instructed by his spiritualist to sleep with his sister, but he refused and the consequence was that he had skin rashes all over his body for over two months.

With pain written all over his face, he took off his jacket, in which was hidden a foam soaked with fluids which came out from the sores on his back. His back was sored with multi-rashes dripping a whitish fluid — a penalty for disobeying the spiritualist.

To keep a normal body scent, he uses a strong-scented designer perfume –Juicy Couture.

Abuda’s odyssey in the world of sakawa and the demands on him that flowed effortlessly from his shaky lips were so horrifying that I declined the food and water he bought for me with the excuse that I was fasting.

Abuda is just one of the many young men who have expressed  a strong desire to quit  sakawa but are unable to do so because it will result in the loss of  their lives.

As classic music played and the quiet restaurant began to get full with an accompanying chatter of cutlery, three of Abuda’s friends joined us. Firm handshakes were exchanged but the smiles were few around the table.

Samson and George (not their real names) shared harrowing tales, including initiation rites, that involved sacrificing two babies that were a day old.

“I want to stop. I want to give all I have away and just have my peace of mind. It is tough,” George said while sipping a chilled Smirnoff ice drink.

Among the three men, the desire to quit is high but unfortunately for them, they are in the same soup as Abuda; the exit appears shut.

Even scarier is the fact that many are losing their lives for failing in their obligations towards whichever deity they have sworn allegiance to.

So far, Abuda said, three of his friends had died for failing to perform the mandatory sacrifices.Sakawa money_opt

Abuda’s initiation

Narrating how he joined sakawa, Abuda said he was introduced to it by a friend five years ago.

“He was my childhood friend at Swedru in the Central Region. Kudu, as I call him, has been into sakawa for more than eight years,” he said.

According to him, his friend was “wickedly rich” with more than $ 5 million in his account.

Abuda said Kudu had three houses located at Swedru, Takoradi and Tema in the Central, Western and Greater Accra regions respectively.

Apart from poverty that pushes many people into the occult realm, Abuda was charmed by his friend’s luxurious lifestyle.

According to him, at a time that most young people struggled to rent a single room, his friend’s four-bedroom house at Swedru had a swimming pool, a gym and a wine bar that most hotels in town would envy.

Abuda said he was initially introduced to that aspect of sakawa where the Internet was used to defraud people.

“After months of series of conversation with one of my Internet clients, I managed to defraud a Ukrainian woman of $ 2,000. I realised it was not enough to live the kind of life I wanted,” he said.

Abuda said he was officially introduced to the “real sakawa where voodooism is applied”.

“What I didn’t know was the sacrifices one had to perform every five weeks,” he said.

For him to be fully initiated, Abuda said he was made to sleep in a coffin at midnight for three weeks.

Aside that, he said he was also instructed to apply a liquid potion on his body every day for three months.

“Finally, I was instructed to sleep with four girls  in a day and deliver their underwear to the spiritualist,” he said.

Asked what happened to those girls, Abuda said he wasn’t aware because “I was told not to ask questions”.

“I was also made to perform the ultimate sacrifice which I will not talk about,” he added.

Abuda said exactly four months after being initiated, he began making money.

Asked how he made $2 million, Abuda said after a sacrifice was performed, he received messages from his bankers of a substantial amount deposited into his account by unknown foreigners.

Hell on earth

Abuda said after performing the sacrifices for almost two years, he was tired because the “task keeps getting scary”.

“Today you will be instructed to do this and tomorrow you will be asked to do something unimaginable. It’s a hell on earth for me.”

Abuda said his friend who introduced him to sakawa fell ill after he failed to perform his January 2015 sacrifices.

“He has sores all over his body and a big boil in his anus. He is really suffering,” he said.

Asked what he intended to do to free himself, Abuda, who looked so confused and disturbed, said, “I do not know”.

Highlife musician, Kwabena Kwabena has said that instead of the operatives of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) insulting Ghanaians for complaining over the erratic power crisis in the country known as Dumsor, they should rather apologise.

“I think they [administrators of this country] should be apologizing every day to the people…,” he said on Accra based Oman FM.

According to the Adult Music singer, he spends about GHC 100.00 on fuel daily as a result of the persistent energy crisis.

Alhaji Halidu Haruna, a former aide of the Chief of Staff labeled the celebrities complaining about the power crisis as irresponsible and prostitutes.

“Dumsor is indeed affecting us and in due course, you will hear from me [on it]…the President must sit up…” he warned.
