Al Jazeera (GOtv & GOtv Plus, Ch 40)

Orphans Of The Sahara: explores the plight of the Tuaregs, who fought for former Libyan leader, Colonel Gadhafi. After decades in exile, they return to the desert of Mali to plan an independent Saharan state, but not without resistance by al Qaeda.  Mali enters a phase of total state collapse as Tuareg rebels declare an independent Saharan state in the north, al Qaeda takes over Timbuktu and an attempted coup d’état to topple the government. Isolated, illiterate and suffering extreme poverty, the Tuaregs serve as the foot soldiers for both separatism and jihadist factions. Orphans Of The Sahara is on Thursday 16 January at 22:00 CAT.
