PHOTOS & VIDEO: Miss Malaika 2014 Eirene Binabiba Launches ‘Malaika Hand Wash’ Campaign #MalaikaHandWash

It looks like, Miss Malaika 2014; Miss Eirene Binabiba is ready to fight the deadly Cholera disease which claimed about 204 lives across the country in 2014 with the launch of her project dubbed Miss Malaika Hand Wash campaign.

When she was crowned Miss Malaika 2014, one of the things that she tasked herself to do to help Ghanaians is to impact the lives of people hence her campaign to teach children how to not just wash their hands properly but also how to keep a good personal hygiene.

The campaign which is targeted at basic schools aims to send the hand washing campaign to over fifteen basic schools within the Accra and Tema metropolis was launched at her Alma Mata, Daras School Limited, located in Teshie-Nungua Estates on May 14, 2015.

According to Eirene, her decision to champion this course was geared towards encouraging the younger ones to learn how to wash their hands the right way and also to inculcate that habit for a healthy living.

Speaking at the launch, Miss Eirene Binabiba said …

“A year ago around this time, we could have been the number twice this much, two years ago, we could have been triple of this number but we don’t see some of our friends, some of our loved ones, some of our family and this is because some of them or we could even say most of them lost their lives to a deadly disease, a cruel disease – which is Cholera.

And so for that matter, my friends and I are over here today, we started with a campaign which is due to the ‘Miss Malaika Hand Wash’ campaign.

In the beginning of this year [2015], about 302 cases have been already reported to various hospitals and these reports are that, Cholera is about spreading and we don’t want that to happen. Last year, most of the people that were killed by Cholera were young ones and we don’t want that to happen.

Why, because we believe that Ghana has a lot of young ones and the future of Ghana is in the hands of these young ones. We don’t want the future of Ghana to be in jeopardy, so we would want everyone to stay healthy. Since last year, the outbreak of Cholera broke the hearts of many in this country.

My friends and I have taken it upon ourselves to embark on this tour to different schools, this is the first school because this is my Alma Mata and I decided to launch this campaign in this school.

I would like to thank all my friends for being here, for supporting me, all those that volunteers from Instagram, Twitter, Facebook to join us on this campaign to teach the younger ones the right way to wash their hands with soap and under running water and also not just that, but to also teach them basic sanitation ethnics that they need to inculcate in their habits to help live a healthy life.”

Dr Daniel from Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital gave staggering stats of the deadly disease and the dangers associated with it. He advised the students not to feel lazy to wash their hands thoroughly before a meal or after visiting the loo.

Eirene Bibabina and her team demonstrated to the students how to wash their hands thoroughly.

The launch was supported by GhOne TV owned by Charterhouse, the organisers of the Miss Malaika pageant, some volunteer friends from social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitterasa well as some finalists of Miss Malaika 2014.

The team donated some items to the school after the exercise. Mr Deyegbe, the headmaster of the school thanked Eirene Binabiba and her team for launching the campaign in the school and wished them all the best as the tour other schools with the exercise.
